Over the past week or so, I've been noticing that one of my programs, Spyware Doctor, has managed to block several attacks on my computer every day at around 4 AM of a spyware program known as "Application.Component.KGB_Spyware". Now normally I wouldn't worry about something like this, but seeing that the same attacks were made repeatedly more than just a few times(not to mention a 'second round' of attacks happening at 10 AM today), I'm beginning to wonder if there's anything extra that's happening behind the scenes and wondering how long Spyware Doctor can hold this thing off. I was wondering if I could get some help not only removing the program that's causing all of this, but also check my computer for anything else that would be harmful. As of right now, I haven't bothered trying to remove it in hopes that my Spyware Doctor would catch it in a full system scan(sadly not the case).

Hi ajones,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you Tomk for helping me out with this ordeal. I apologize on the late response but my internet has been acting funky for awhile now. We recently got a new wireless router(old one kicked the can)and my internet fluxuates very frequently from an excellent speed to being unable to access certain sites. Anyways, it took me a few tries to perform it, but I was able to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Program. The report for that will be the first thing below these paragraphs. Again, I apologize for the report being from yesterday but as I said my internet has been jumping from good to terrible within a split second sometimes. Also, a new HJT report can be found underneath the Malwarebytes report below. As far as how my computer is acting…

Nothing too much has changed about it, but some rather large noticeable changes are that it has slowed down within the past month or two and that my anti-virus programs are not only no longer running pre-scheduled tasks(i.e. quick scans and full scans) on their own but one of my programs, Spyware Doctor which was manufactured by PC Tools, is now acting on any program that's running, treating it as if the program will harm the computer in some way, even though I've used these things dozens of time beforehand(I'm talking about game programs like Age of Empires or Warcraft 3. I would have other examples, but alas I don't have any other genre of game outside of RTS and World of Warcraft). The only other major difference is my internet, which as I explained above, can sometimes be very good and can be very very crappy at other times, requiring me to jump onto an open network some nights just to get some basic things done(e-mail, favorite website checking, homework, etc.). At this point, me and my father believed the problem to be with our old wireless router finally dieing out after it started to become crappy. Our new router is much better than the old one, but everyone on the network regularly gets delayed loadings from websites, sometimes being unable to access them at all. It's slowly gotten better over time but it still persists regularly.

ajones,

Let's dig a little deeper.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Here is a following log of a ComboFix run on my machine. Before we go too far in-depth with this, I would also like to ask as a side note of another strange behavior I excluded above. Whenever i fire up my machine or do something with my Norton Anti-Virus program, a small installation window for a program called "ccCommon" appears and tries to install itself. EVerytime it's appeared I cancel the process, but what I would like to know is what that's all about if it's at all possible.

ajones,

You have two AV programs running. Norton AntiVirus and Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus. The Norton is out of date. ccCommon is related to norton.

You have two Firewalls running, Norton and COMODO. Not a good idea to run multiple Firewalls or anti virus programs. Norton is out of date so please remove it. Go to Add or Remove programs in your control panel and uninstall everything that refers to Norton or Symantec.

Use the link below to see how to run the Norton Removal Tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Quick question before I continue on though, Tomk: would it at all be possible to update Norton? I've come to appreciate it greatly, as it's blocked many things that I have 'stumbled upon' over the past few years. As far as COMODO is concerned, I didn't even know it was on my machine until you brought it up, so how it would help is beyond me. My father has the Norton 360 version on his machine, so if I remove this, is it okay to install that and remove COMODO somehow?(what is COMODO anyways)
ajones, COMODO Firewall Pro is a firewall. If you want to keep Norton, you must uninstall Comodo, uninstall Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus, and update Norton. Update Norton first. You may have to pay Norton to be able to update.
Is the uninstallation necessary to continue or is it optional? Only reason I ask this Tomk is because I prefer to have both of those up and running(Spyware Doctor catches small things like adware and popups, whereas Norton catches false sites and whatnot).
ajones, It is necessary. Running two anti-viruses and/or two firewalls can cause a multitude of problems. Some problems can just be annoying such as false positives. Other problems can be that each program will target portions of the other one as potential malware and can "kill" portions of the other program. This can render it noneffective. One anti-virus, one firewall, one real-time anti-spyware.
Spyware Doctor has been removed and Norton has been updated. All that is left to do is to uninstall COMODO firewall, which is why I'm replying thus far. I am unsure as to how to remove it, as it does not appear in the Change/Remove Program screen when I pull it up and I cannot find any folder for it either within my C: drive. On a side note, I hope either Norton can block the spyware threat or this gets resolved by 4 AM tomorrow, as that is when the attacks happen(delved into my C: drive to try and clean some stuff out for a defrag and found some suspicious files that were created today at the very same time period that the attacks happen).
Working on the COMODO ordeal right now. The files are underneath a folder called "33a6f45267d2e985e33369e5". There are two new folders underneath it, called 1033(made at 4:02 AM this morning) and setup(made at 4:04 this morning). Looking into it more, it all appears to be SQL stuff, and everything else that isn't underneath those two folders were made on Nov. 25, 2008. Also, I'm confused as to how I can work the DOS window. I can't seem to download the official version of COMODO so I'm unable to uninstall it.
ajones,

Click start in the lower left of your screen
Click on Run
Type CMD in the box and hit OK
Type CD C:\Program Files\Comodo\Personal Firewall and press enter key
Type fwconfig -uninstall and press enter key

Let me know how it goes
I've gotten to the "C:\Program Files\Comodo\Personal Firewall" Extension, but it doesn't recogmize the fwconfig -uninstall command.
