no other problems,
how do I delete Limewire, what is the best uninstall process?
Also, should the individual infected songs be removed?

thx.
Hi :)

no other problems,

Good to know

how do I delete Limewire, what is the best uninstall process?

OK as follows:

Please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

LimeWire

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

If no uninstaller for LimeWire is to be found in Add/Remove Programs, using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to Explore) and navigate to the below folder

C:\Program Files\LimeWire

Within the aforementioned folder double click on the UninstallerData folder. Search for a file with the word Uninstall in its name-for instance, Uninstall LimeWire.

Double-click on this file to launch the program uninstaller.

Next:

Using Windows Explorer again, (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\Program Files\LimeWire
C:\Program Files\LimeShop

Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK.
  • Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are checked.
  • You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Click on OK then Yes.
  • Now Reboot(restart) your computer.

Also, should the individual infected songs be removed?

We removed these with the last custom OTMoveIT script I asked your good self to perform.

thx.

You're welcome!

Next:

Congratulations your computer now appears to be malware free!

Now I have some tasks for your good self to carry out as part of a clean up process and some advice about online safety.

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read both of the below listed topics as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well.

Help! My computer is slow!

Also so is this:

What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click on Start >> Run…
  • Now type in Combofix /u in the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
Clean up with OTMoveIt3:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed combination Antivirus application, Trend Micro-Antivirus automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also once per week.

Erunt:

Emergency Recovery Utility NT, I advice you keep this installed as a means to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.

Myself I would actually create a new back up once per week as this along with System Restore may prove to be invaluable if something unforeseen occurs!

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:
Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:
  • Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  • Never open emails from unknown senders.
  • Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  • Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.
Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Make your Internet Explorer safer:

For Internet Explorer 7

Please read this article to configure Internet Explorer 7 properly.

Note: Internet Explorer v8 has been recently released from its beta program, my advice hold off upgrading for the time being as no doubt flaws will be identified and fixes released over the coming months.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:
Only use one of the above.

Finally a educational source:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein:

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Some consider this article outdated, personally I still think it bares relevance and the author is well respected in the Anti-Malware community and by myself also!

Any questions? feel free to ask, if not stay safe!
I'm trying to uninstall Limewire… I did the uninstall program but cannot delete the ProgramFile/Limewire. It says "cannot delete: access denied" ???
Hi :)

OK not a problem. Some questions however before we proceed:
  • Is OTMoveIT3 still present on your computers desktop or not?
  • Did you delete this folder or not: C:\Program Files\LimeShop
yes, OTMoveIt3 is still on my desktop LimeShop was nowhere to be found in ProgramFiles/Limewire ** one more question: if I wanted to transport my music to a new computer, should I just save it to a flash drive and then transport? thank you! emily
Hi :)

thank you!
emily

Your very welcome!

yes, OTMoveIt3 is still on my desktop
LimeShop was nowhere to be found in ProgramFiles/Limewire

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
:Files
C:\Program Files\LimeWire
C:\Program Files\LimeShop

:Commands
[EmptyTemp]
[Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
  • Then click the red MoveIt! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
  • If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTMoveIt3.

** one more question: if I wanted to transport my music to a new computer, should I just save it to a flash drive and then transport?

The below method will disinfect your Flash Drive if it was ever connected to your computer before we removed the malware etc:

Flash Disinfector:

  • Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Plug it in.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task (Run…). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.
Next:

Transfer your music files to the Flash Drive. Then safely disconnect it from your computer.

Post back the OTMoveIT3 log please.
Hi :) Everything OK, any problems encountered? Even though I gave the all clear malware wise for your computer, I would still like to view the OTMoveIt3 log to verify those pesky LimeWire related folders have indeed been deleted.
