Computer had popups while surfing, and (in something that might be totally unrelated to Malware) randomly plays the Windows alert sound, the one that happens when you attach or disconnect a usb drive. May have had reader_s.exe which was removed (I think) by running spybot search & destroy in safe mode.

I followed the instructions in the "Before Posting a Hijack This Log self help" and ran ERUNT, ATF Cleaner, & Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Hijackthis log & Malwarebytes log attached below. I've run the Hijack this log through an analyzer at Hijackthis.de, which indicates a few problems still, but I'm unsure as how to fix them.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi and :welcome:

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

VERY IMPORTANT !!!
Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
The computer seems to be running better. No pop-ups so far. The one odd thing is Combofix detected McAfee, which I can't find on this computer. It's not listed in Add/Remove, it's not showing up in the system tray, and I don't see it in the program list from the start menu. I think it was installed on this computer in the past, but was removed. There is a McAfee folder in C:\Program Files, but the only folder inside it is called SpamKiller.

The disconnect sound (which might have nothing to do with malware) seems to be less prevalent as well.

Also, AVG Resident Shield comes up with a threat detected.

File Name: C:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys

Threat Name: Trojan horse Rootkit-Agent.DI
Detected on Open.

Hi,

Please do the following:
I would like you to upload that file to be scanned
  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:
    • C:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys

  • Click on the Upload button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.
do the same for this next file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache\ndis.sys

NEXT

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

File::
c:\windows\system32\d3d8caps.dat
C:\gldmo.exe
C:\-1393570993

Folder::

Registry::

Driver::

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

* Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
* ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
* When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
* Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NOTE: CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

NOTE: when you re-enable your tea timer after running Combo Fix make sure you allow all the changes or it will undo all the deletions of Malware made by ComboFix

Virscan.org seems to hang. It gets to 208.3kb/208.3kb(84%) uploaded, and then doesn't progress further. Should I continue with the steps or try a different scanner?
Try these

Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/

On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath in there.

Then hit Submit

The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.

Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

You may receive a message stating "

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:

http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html
Both websites hang. Virus Total gives me a 500 internal server error. "The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request" I can move the file onto a mac using usb drive and upload , would that work?
No, it needs to be uploaded from your computer.

The fact that you cannot complete the uploads is not a good sign

I suspect an infection of virut…a polymorphic file infector.

I would take this opportunity to back up any of your important documents, pictures, and music, DO NOT copy any executable files (.exe, .com, .scr, .pif, .sys) as these are likely to be infected and will simply re-infect your system again.

Disregard the other steps for now

instead do this:

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit icon to start the program.
  • press start
  • Allow the program to run the initial express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory. If something is found, click the YES button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    Note: A pop up may appear during this phase suggesting you purchase their program - click the X at the top right corner of this pop-up to close it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, check the Complete scan box on the left side, even if nothing was found on the initial scan.
  • Then click the small green arrow button on the right under the Dr.Web Antivirus picture to start the complete scan. (This scan will take several hours)
  • During this complete scan - if Dr.Web finds an infection a window will pop up requesting your attention. Select the Cure button.
    • Note:(If the file cannot be cured, Dr.Web will automatically delete the file)
  • Once the scan is complete, on the menu bar, click file and choose report list.
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Note:this report will need to be renamed to Dr.Web.txt in order to post it on the forum.
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Please post the Dr.Web.txt report in your next reply

If it turns out your system is infected with virut this should find it
Before I closed Dr Webb it told me there were unfixed problems and asked me if I wanted to exit. I chose to select all the problems listed & then chose cure. It deleted the problems that were not curable. Well that's actually good news,

no virut -

reader_s.exe is a classic sign of it - but there doesn't appear to be any sign of that left. Still doesn't explain why those uploads failed though.

Let's go back to our original plan….

You will need to delete the version of Combo Fix you have on your desktop if it's still there (Dr.Web doesn't like it and deletes it)

Down load a fresh copy of combo fix from the links I provided before and run it as per those instructions,,,then post the fresh combo fix log…

Then…run this tool on all your removable media as the infection may have been on a USB…

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from HERE and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.

Note:Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.
It seems that browsing is a little faster than before, but I'm not sure.

Ok,

before we do anything else, lets see if we can get these suspicious files analyzed

Make sure you have disabled teatimer and your AV just for this upload and scan as that may have been the problem before

To disable Spybot's Teatimer > start Spybot and go to the Mode button and select Advanced.
Go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer.
Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit".
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.
Do not forget to re-enable teatimer when we are done .
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

Now do this

  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:
    • c:\windows\system32\dllcache\ndis.sys
  • Click on the Upload button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

do the same for this file
  • c:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys

let me know how you get on and post the results if successful

(please identify which report is for which file)
Well first I had problems downloading the Tea Timer Reset. IE gave me an error message, I think Firefox might have been able to get it, but it was saved as a html. I downloaded it off of a mac & moved the .bat file over via a clean USB drive (used the program from an earlier post). Ran that & attempted to upload to VirScan.org. The first file listed gives an error message: Error: returned status code 12029 Unknown, 0KB uploaded 0%, although the timer is still running, but there's no activity. The second file listed just seems to hang, it's stuck on initializing, with 0KB, 0% uploaded. Previously the file would almost completely upload and then hang. Using VirusTotal, which you mentioned in a previous post, the first file seems to upload to 61% (127.34KB / 208.45KB) and then stops. Jotti seems to hang, there's no indication of activity, other than "Uploading File, please wait"
Hi,

OK, I can't explain why that isn't working at this time so lets move on…

Please do the following.

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy') (do not copy the word "code")

File::
C:\-1393570993
C:\gldmo.exe

FileLook::
c:\windows\system32\dllcache\ndis.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys

Folder::

Registry::

Driver::

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";

NEXT

Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware program
  • Search for any updates
  • run a quick scan.
  • Allow the program to remove anything it finds
  • Post the results of the scan here.

In your next reply please include

  • ComboFix log
  • MBAM log
