Ok so even though it has the Application Digital Signature error clicking Run as I did means it is still going to work? There is also the done with error symbol in the bottom left corner of the website. I clicked run & doesn't look like anything has happened besides the downloading and installing programs which is staying at 0%. Are you sure it is working? I also disabled my antivirus & antispyware so it can work.
Restarted the computer & disabled antivirus & antispyware but still get the "Applications digital signature has an error. Do you want to run the application" & when I click run nothing happens. It stays at 0%. What should I try now?
sweetiehlm5,

Let's try a different online scanner.

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.

I'd also like to see a new HijackThis log.
Ok for the Eset online scanner there was not a details page. I ran the scan twice with the first time having the scan applications checked & the second time not having that box checked. Each time it came back with no threats found. I don't see where the details tab would be I guess unless it showed it found something.

Here is the latest hjtlog

TomK,

I installed Secunia & the following items were found

Itunes 6.x
Winzip 8.x
Adobe flashplayer 9.X (foxfire plugin)
Adobe flashplayer 9.X (general plugin)
Yahoo Messenger 8.X

Security threats 5
Security threats score 91%

It then reduced down to 2 after fixing winzip & the adobe flashplayer. I don't use Itunes & I am not sure I need to download the latest version so would it be wise for me to try & find the itunes stored on my computer & remove it or is it needed for other programs I use?

Also yahoo Messenger 8.X wants to install but it has other options like phoneout that I am not sure I want as it might be a paying program so should I install that or not? I do IM chats on yahoo once every blue moon so I do use it but I don't plan on using a phone service through yahoo.

sweetiehlm5,

If you don't want Itunes, you can uninstall it using Add and Remove programs in your control panel.

I don't know of any real security risks with yahoo messenger so I don't think that's a big deal either.

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

Cleanup

  • Double click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

Please delete DDS.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
TomK I really appreciate all your help. Everything seems to be very much back to normal again. You were very patient with me & I wonder how much sleep you actually got this weekend since you were helping me & others so much. I will be making a donation because I know you spent a lot of time & effort on helping me individually as well as others. Thank you very much. I have learned a lot from you these past few days. I literally felt like a monster was in the computer & when you stated lets see if we can weaken it, that surely happened. :notworthy: :yeah: Combofix is removed now & the cleanup process is done. Secunia indicates 100% secure with no threats. I never did get a chance to install DDS because I was being prevented from downloading it. I still have erunt, gmer, & hijackthis on the desktop. Do you want me to keep all of those programs where they are or uninstall any? I will be reading the links you provided on keeping the computer safe & preventing malware.
sweetiehlm5, Erunt is handy to have. Gmer and HijackThis just take up space so you might as well delete them also. You are very welcome. Good Luck and Be Well.

TomK,

After my last post I did a Malwarebytes Scan & mid way through the Mcafee notification window popped up indicating that Mcafee has detected Generic!Artemis trojan & blocked it. The notice disappeared so quickly that I am not sure if it said it quarantined or removed the trojan. I read on the internet from my cell phone that it can be a false/positive sometimes. Not sure if that is the case here? I didn't delete hjtlog just yet which is probably good so here are the results if that can tell you anything. PS Malwarebytes didn't find any malware in the scan.

sweetiehlm5,

Artemis is a heuristic detection method by McAfee. You can read about it here. It triggers a false positive fairly often.

I believe that McAfee keeps a record of what it finds. If you could please find what the last file it detected is, we can then try to determine if it is a false positive, or if it was/is actually infected.
TomK, Under the reports log section of Mcafee 3/29/2009 11:120:53 PM Real Time Scan Detection name: Generic!Artemis (trojan) Repaired(removed) File C:\documentsandsettings\HeleneLesueur\N Processes: C:\ProgramFiles\Malwarebytes' Anti-malware\mbam.exe Processes description MalwarebytesAntimalware
Ok I get it I see Artemis is of Mcafee's own doing based on the link you provided. It is a false positive & since I ran a Malwarebytes scan that is probably why the Artemis popped up. Thanks once again TomK for explaining everything.
