Hello! I'm new to the forum and I seem to have a problem with firefox. Since yesterday or the day before, when I visited different sites, there were a lot of links on the words which I havent seen. It was the exact same forum and there are links with little video boxes. Can you look at my HJT report please? Thank You!

Hello and :welcome:

You have some odd entries in your hosts file

It seems to be related to a gaming site GamingAddix.com is this something that you have added yourself as some type of custom hosts file?

If you know nothing of this then I suggest you do the following:

Download HostsXpert by FunkyToad from >>>here<<< and save it to your Desktop.

You will need to extract the ZIPPED file(s):
Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

  • You should now see the HostsXpert folder
  • open it and double click HostsXpert.exe
  • Click on Restore MS Hosts File.
  • In the confirmation window, click on OK.
  • Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against further infection.
  • If it says "Make Writable?", click it and it should change to the above.
  • Close program when complete.
  • Empty Recycle Bin

NEXT

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    • If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

I see you have MalwareBytes AntiMalware on your machine
  • Open the program and have it search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

In your next reply I need

  • Confirmation re HostsXpert
  • MBAM log
  • Fresh HJT log

Also please advise how your computer is running now.

NOTE:

Also I do not see that you have an AntiVirus program installed on your machine. (unless your Comodo is a security suite?)
I can recommend a couple of very good free antivirus programs (which is an absolute necessity to have) for you to try out, once I see the MBAM log and Fresh HJT log.
Hey CatBytes, sorry for the late reply. Yes, I had COMODO Internet Security, but I uninstalled it because the virus definition files were very bad with a lot of false positives and the Defense+ is quite annoying as i have to put every file manually or get blocked by COMODO and then set it. Now I have ESET Smart Security 3.0.621.0. The GamingAddix was a site I visited long time ago which I don't recall really, but no I did not do a custom setup. Also, I have a few questions before I put in my logs. My first question is I have a lot of scanners on my computer including Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware, ESET Smart Security, and Windows Defender. Is that ok? They shouldn't collide with each other if I do one scan at a time right? Also, when you asked me to do a Confirmation re HostsXpert, what does that mean :o? For HostsXpert, after I "Make Hosts Read Only", I didn't get anything to clean from the recycle bin. Were the GamingAddix host files deleted? Finally I have CCleaner already on my computer. It cleans just as good as ATF Cleaner right? Alright sorry for asking so many questions here are the logs:

Hi CatBytes, sorry for double posting but I got one last question. Ever since my MBAM updated from 1.34 to 1.35, there is no M in the system tray. Also when my computer starts up, it says something like, "This is a pirated version of Malwarebytes. Certain information will be sent without consent." I'm not sure if this is normal with 1.35 or is it that someone hijacked my Malwarebytes…?

when I visited different sites, there were a lot of links on the words which I havent seen. It was the exact same forum and there are links with little video boxes.

These are little advertising boxes that some sites use for unregistered guests (our forum has them too - come to the site with out logging in and you will see them) they are not malware related, they disappear once you register or log in.

I have ESET Smart Security 3.0.621.0.

Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware, ESET Smart Security, and Windows Defender. Is that ok?

 Yes, they are all fine together

Confirmation re HostsXpert, what does that mean

just wanted to make sure the program ran properly and you didn't get any errors - I see that it did because the corrupted files in your hosts are deleted

I have CCleaner already on my computer. It cleans just as good as ATF Cleaner right?

Yes, just don't be tempted to use the registry clean up function - it's not required and can really mess up your computer.

Alright sorry for asking so many questions

never apologize for asking questions - that's how we learn :)

Now please do the following
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if still present):

O2 - BHO: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.

Next: Open Notepad

Click Start >Run type notepad into the run box click OK
Click Format and make certain that Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Copy the text inside of the code box, put your mouse cursor at the very beginning of the text and then hold down the left button and drag your mouse so that all of the text is highlighted. Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad. To do this click in the blank page so that your cursor is flashing there and press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Note: There must be NO blank lines in front of the pasted text, but ensure that there is a blank line at the end of the text, otherwise the registry merge will not work.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=""

Now go to File > and click Save As,
From the drop down menu at the top of the box choose Desktop as the location to save this file.
Go down to the File Name box and type in fixme.reg as the file name, then choose All Files as the save as file type.
Then click the save button.
Once you have clicked the save button, close Notepad.

You should now see a file on your desktop that looks like this.

[external image: Posted Image]

Locate that file on your desktop and double click it, an information box will pop up asking if you want to merge the information in the file into the registry, click YES.

Once the file has run, the information will have merged with your registry so you can delete fixme.reg from your desktop as you won't be needing it any more.

Please post a fresh HJT log and advise how your computer is running now.
Hi CatBytes!

These are little advertising boxes that some sites use for unregistered guests (our forum has them too - come to the site with out logging in and you will see them) they are not malware related, they disappear once you register or log in.

Ohh…Ok :woot:

Yes, they are all fine together

Cool :)

Yes, just don't be tempted to use the registry clean up function - it's not required and can really mess up your computer.

:pullhair: Ahh!!! I've used this so many times that i can't even recall! I do back them up though. I also use RegCure. The first time I used it I had over 2000 errors and I was tempted . Thank God it didn't mess up my computer .

never apologize for asking questions - that's how we learn :)

You're right :)!

Ok I've done everything you said. Here's the new HJT report:

Hi,

Good news, your log is clean

Keep the MalwareBytes and ATF cleaner they are good programs to have.
You can delete the zip.file and extracted files of the HostsXpert.

Now please do this:

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points
We need to set a new system restore point:

Click Start > Run > copy and paste the following into the run box:

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next.
Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create,
when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Now remove all previous Restore Points:

Click Start > Run > copy and paste the following into the run box:

cleanmgr

At the top, click on More Options tab. Click the Clean up button in the System Restore box.
Click on the Yes button.
When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.
  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.
  • SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more.  Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • For Firefox, I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.
    • NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
    • McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling.
  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories.  This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
  • Please read the guide by Rorschach112on how to prevent malware and about safe computing here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Stay Safe :wavey:
