Ok, I have been getting pop ups for two days. I ran Spybot, Ad-Aware and Symantec….with no resolution. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Also not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I have both IE and Foxfire…and sometimes Foxfire acts really weird. What I mean is for no reason at all, I will start typing a message or anything for that matter, and my text will start coming out reversed. Almost as if I were typing backwards. The only way that it will stop is if I log off and log back on to my computer. Does anyone know what is up with that?

I have downloaded ERUNT and created a back up!

Nicely done  At the end I will have a link for a good free defragmenting programme - once I have removed my bits and bobs run that and see if you notice an improvement

Now the best part of the day —– Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..Run OTListit and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

XP
Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SuperAntispyware Run weekly to keep your system clean
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe :wavey:

Then download and run Auslogics Disc Defragmenter

Then download and run Auslogics Disc Defragmenter

OK lets repair system restore first

You will need to be able to view hidden files, so go to Start>> Control Panel>> Folder Options>> View tab.
Under Advanced settings, place a check mark in: "Show hidden files and folders".
Then uncheck: "Hide extensions for known file types".
Click Apply, then OK to exit.
Open Windows Explorer, then go to Windows>> inf folder.
Open the inf folder and find a file named: sr.inf
Right click this file and select "Install" from the resulting menu.

Note: This procedure will delete all restore points from your old installation and recreate a fresh installation of System Restore.
When finished with this reboot the system and try going back into system restore and see if it works.

As for Javare delete that and we will remove the old versions of java via add/remove in tthe control panel

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Java™ 6 Update 3

[external image: Posted Image] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 13.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Let me know how that goes
I took care of Java…

But…

When I try to install sr.inf I get this message that pops up

The file 'sr.sys' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

The only cd I have of Windows is the recovery disc that came with my PC. It's a system Recovery Disc, and it states that the recovery process erases all data and files on my hard drive, which is something I don't want to happen.

What should I do?
OK lets use a quicker method from Kellys Korner

Go here and select 278 left which is about halfway down the page this will download a registry file restore/enable system restore to your desktop, right click this file and select merge accept the warnings and then retry system restore.

If that fails then on the same page select 289 right and it will download Restore system restore service follow the same routine for merge with that then try system restore again
Hmm works for me - OK right click the link in Kellys corner and select save target as or save as… and that should let you download it to your desktop
Ok, I figured out how to make it download. I was using Foxfire and it wouldn't let me download, even if I right-clicked. So I opened up Internet Explorer and it let me download it. I have noticed that Foxfire does alot of strange things like that.

Anywho, I downloaded both files and merged them, and I'm still not able to open Restore. I took a screen shot to show you what I see, if that helps.

OK looking at that system restore is corrupted so I need to find the path for service pack 3

When I try to install sr.inf I get this message that pops up

The file 'sr.sys' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Which is I believe C:\windows\Service Pack Files\i386
When you run the sr.inf point the programme to that location
