I had a problem downloading HijackThis, it was taking an inordinate amount of time to download, over 10 minutes. I moved this computer closer to the wireless router/modem until I got a connection then downloaded HJT from the What the Tech site. In any case, when I try to run HJT for a log , it says HJT is already running. Now I did run HJT first by left clicking on it, instead of right clicking on it and running it as administrator, forgetting this os is vista. Can you tell me how to turn HJT off or do I need to uninstall then reinstall it?
When I open Task Manager it does not show HJT as running. This morning, after being idle all night there was no error message.

Hi Keltics,

The logs you posted do not show any signs of infection. The event log showed some errors related to your connection that were a few days old. I note that you moved the computer a bit closer to the router to improve the connection. This error may have been related to that.

I'll give you a couple of link to some other parts of the forum should the error message show up again. They would probably be able to identify it faster than I could.

How's the computer?
Hi Keltics, That's strange. Just to confirm how you are looking at the running tasks. Make sure that HJT isn't open. Right click your Task Bar , near the clock, select task manager Click on the Processes tab, and locate hijackthis.exe. Click on it and then click End Process.
Done. I was trying to turn it off from 'applications'. Like I said, greenhorn. Should I still post an hjt log or just forget about it and cleanup. The message hasn't shown up again.

Hi Keltics,

This looks Ok. Just some old java to replace.

Remember to use right click to install the new java.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)" 6 Update 13 (it's the first one)
  • Click the download button on the right.
If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.
  • Select the platform (Windows, in your case), mutli language.
  • Accept the license agreement, click continue.
You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control
  • Scroll down and click on Windows Offline Installation,
  • Save the file jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop;
Do not select Run . Do not install it yet.

When the download is complete, close your browser.

Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:
  • Uninstall Java™ 6 Update 5
  • Do not uninstall Java TM 6 Update 13 if found! :yeah:
Reboot your computer.

  • right-click on the saved file to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Post back and we'll clean up.
