Recently, I started to get a pop up message from Trend Micro Officescan saying URL Blocked

http://url.adtrgt.com/cpv.jsp?p=110380&…=889&ip=173 …… (really long message)

This message is popping up way too much. I also noticed Internet browsing has slowed down considerably (maybe due to my recent update/install of the scan) and when I go to my hotmail account it keeps saying its Loading…. and nothing comes up, unless I click twice or thrice. Also whenever I turn off the computer I get a message saying it has to close the program RUNDLL32 and it seems its saving some sort of information but after a little while it will say Program has stopped responding to which I will press END NOW!! I thinks this is happening every time I have shut it down for the last couple of days.

I noticed someone had posted a similar message so I downloaed HIJACKTHIS from a link from the CNET website and the HIJACKTHIS log follows. Please help me cleanup. Thanks. I will make sure I read your notes on "How I got infected in the first place" and try to incorporate your suggestions on securing the computer.

Appears to be a pretty classic case of a Vundo infection.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop


  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

sorry took me a while to disable Trend Micro OfficeScan. ( I did not have a password) Even after I thought I had Unloaded Officescan, Combofix said I still had it running. So I just Uninstalled it and I think it worked. Anyway, here is the new Combofix.txt and HijackthisLog. Something NEW happened today! My Network connection (wireless) keeps dropping off which has never happened before!! So currently connected via Ethernet cable to the internet. Could this problem be related to Vundo? Also I was in touch with customer service Verizon who messed around with Router settings but who have no idea why my wireless connection is dropping off and of course they are sending me a new router which I am suspecting is not the culprit. All this, so that you have some background as to what is going on with the laptop since I last sent you a HijackThis.log

It's possible the Malware has affected your network. But wired works without issues? We'll get you clean then we can try and work out the network issue.

I would also suggest you get TM re-installed right after running combofix below. Don't want to get re-infected while we're doing this.

1. Open Notepad

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

Here are the new logs. When I am connected to Internet via ethernet cable I do not see any drop offs. On the other hand the wireless network keeps getting connected and disconnected. I will have to find a good Anti-virus software as I think I may have lost Trend Micro Officescan!! Any suggestions on what I can download for free that works similar to Trend Officescan. Thanks.

First, use Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect…
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

Once you get the new AV installed, update it and run a full system scan. Let it fix or quarantine whatever it finds. Let me know how you make out. We may run another scan also.

I installed Avast Anti Virus Home Edition and ran it. I don't think it found anything. It took a while to scan the whole computer and their log is not showing anything. I am assuming if it found something it would show up in Avast's log viewer. Is there something else I need to install other than Avast. I really appreciate your help on this. I have my laptop sitting close to the router and I am still noticing the wireless connection dropping off and coming back on. Not sure why that is happening. Like I said that just started today morning. I have another computer which is always hooked up directly through the router using ethernet cable. Do you suppose I might have the same Vundo Infection there too. Of course on the other computer which is an old 2000 desktop we had the Symantec Antivirus software. So I may not see the URL Blocked message that I was getting from Trend on the laptop. I don't think the Anti virus software has been updated on the desktop. Also, since I visit the same sites on both computers I would think the probability of having the same infection on the desktop would be high.

I wanted to correct what I said. After I installed the Avast Anti Virus software it automatically restarted the computer and scanned the whole computer before Windows came up. So I am assuming a full scan was done.

Let's get a second opinion.

I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.

Looks like the laptop is clean. Thankyou. Here is a copy of Kscan and HijackThis log follows. I am not getting that Ending Now Program problem before I shut my computer off. I am assuming that adtrgt popup problem has resolved as I don't have Trend Micro to block it anymore. I am definitely not getting any pop ups. Also, Hotmail is no longer acting weird. Thankyou again.

My new problem that started yesterday morning before we started the cleanup remains and it may not be related at all. The wireless connection (laptop is right next to the router) keeps dropping off. Anyway, a new router is being sent so that may resolve the problem.

What should my next step be to clean the desktop, I have a feeling that it may have been infected too?

Yes, looks clean. If you want you can post over at the Windows Forum here at WTT to help sort out the wireless problem. They have some really sharp techs that help over there. Just let them know you were here (give them the link) and got cleaned up.

For your desktop, post a new thread with your HijackThis log.

[external image: Posted Image] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Some updating, clean up, and final words.

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 13.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. Trying to incorporate all what you mentioned. The issue is resolved for now. Lets see how the laptop does after I install all the "wares"! I am pretty sure my desktop is also infected even though I have not seen any signs yet . Especially because security wise its worse than our laptop. I will open another thread for that.
