Problem began with blue screen shutdown. I tried restarting in safe mode, last known good configuration mode, and debugging mode. After many attempts, I was able to reach my desktop, but would freeze at that point. After leaving the computer off overnight, I was able to get on line to reach you today, but with much difficulty(error messages, etc.). I received an error reporting message saying that windows had recovered from a serious problem (but apparently not completely). In preparation for this post, I followed the 'before posting a hijack this log" instructions. I ran ATF Cleaner and downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to my desktop, but was unable to install it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Kent1,

Your system has been infected by one or more Rootkits/Backdoor Trojans.

crypts.dll

http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_141505.htm

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

I strongly suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities. I must remind you that I cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely clean afterwards since we have no way of knowing what has been done to it.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

Thanks
Hi oldman 960, Thanks for your reply. Per your instructions, I have notified all of my accounts of possible identity theft. I don't use this computer for anything sensitive so for the time being I will not reformat. I would, however, appreciate your help with a cleanup. Thanks, Kent1
Hi Kent1,

Do you recognize a folder called Kent Neal ?

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

You will need to disable Spybot's Tea Timer function, if it is running, as it may interfere. - this is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine fully for the changes to take effect.

It is vitally important that combofix is renamed before it is even started to download

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    -Tools->Options->Main tab
-Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

[external image: Posted Image]

[external image: Posted Image]

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix

———————————————————–

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Please post back with the combofix log and a new HJT log

Thanks

Hi oldman 096
I have to the best of my ability followed your instructions and have included above the combofix log and a new HJT log. The first time I ran the combofix scan the scan completed, but no log was prepared so I ran it a second time and provided that log. I searched for a folder called Kent Neal and found it in Documents and Settings. In that folder I found a suspicious file titled:
Kent Neal.exe
Rrypysor Ufuhuty
BWJQEA Typqyfugion
Properties: General: Type:Application
Description:Rrypysor Ufuhuty
Size:29KB
Created: 3/22/09 3:55pm (this was the date and time that the problem began)
Attributes:Hidden

Version:37.93.108.9
Copyright:Hokolaxae BWJQEA Cabjnjq
I believe that file was addressed during the combofix scan. Let me know what else I need to do.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Kent1,

Do you use a proxy for playing games on line?

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark these lines, if present

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:7171
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysldtray] C:\windows\ld02.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pp] C:\windows\pp04.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dll] rundll32 dll32,sm
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [JYceVVcrTd] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\wtatmpcf\qbszgrux.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZUxdm265NUUS

Close ALL other windows/browsers and click Fix Checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

We will be using Combofix again.

Please follow all previous instructions regarding security programs.

Open a new Notepad session
  • Click the Start button, click run
  • in the run box type notepad
  • click ok
  • In the notepad, Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not checked.
  • Copy and paste all the all of the text in the code box below into the Notepad, (including the URL). Do Not copy the word CODE

How is the computer at the moment?

Thanks
Good Morning, Kent has asked me to assist as he can no longer access the internet. His OE does seem to work however and he has emailed me the requested logs to post. Do you have some instructions I should follow in order to post these logs for him? I have made many attempts this morning without success. Thank you in advance, Donna (for Kent!)
Hi oldman 960, I am back online, but not out of the woods. I have run Combofix and HJT. I am still unable to install MBAM. I noticed two lines in the HJT scan that had reappeared after being fixed. (R1-HKCU\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Interet Settings,ProxyServer=http=localhost:7171 and 04-HKCU\..Run:[dll] rundll32 dll32,sm). I ran a HJT system scan and refixed them, and was able to get back online. I am able to copy the logs, but am unable to paste them here. I am having the same problem that my friend was experiencing when she tried to paste the logs that I had e-mailed. As you know I was able to do so earlier. I do not use a proxy for playing games online. Some aspects of my computer have improved. My e-mail is operating better. At present, my biggest issue the inability to post the new logs and inability to install and run MBAM. Should I reactivate any of my anti-virus, firewall, etc? I really appreciate your help and wish I could provide all the requested imput. Thanks again, Kent1
Hi Kent1,

Sorry for the delay, but I'm having a few mechanical difficulties of my own.

I don't know why you can't copy and paste. Are you able to attach the log? We can do that for now.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Thanks

Was just fixing the o1 line that pointed at the proxy enough to get back on line?
📎mbam_log_2009_03_27__15_04_49_.txt Hi oldman960, I was able finally to install and run MBAM. I downloaded it again and then it installed and ran with no problem. I was able to upload it as an attachment. However, when I tried uploading the COMBOFIX log, the panel indicated uploading progress, but terminated with the message "You did not select a file to upload." When I tried to upload the HJT log, I was told "You are not permitted to upload this typle of file". I tired both logs several times with the same result. When I attempt to copy and paste, everything goes smoothly until I attempt to paste into the reply panel. Then the cusor freezes and the window indicates that IE (not responding). Apparently fixing the 2 lines was enough to get back on line. They have not reappeared in the HJT logs I have run since. Whether it was the ProxyServer line or the rundll32 line is beyond my pay grade. I don't know if I'm out of the woods yet, but at least I feel that I'm in a clearing. Thanks again, Kent1
Hi Kent1, For the HJT log change the extention from .log to .txt For the combofix log, can you paste it into the HJT log? That way you'd only have one file to attach. Thanks
Hi oldman960, I was able to paste the combofix log into the HJT log and I changed the extension to .txt, but when I try to upload the attachement (2,649KB) it appears to be uploading (clock running and bar progressing) but at the end it says "You did not select a file to upload". On the positive side my computer seems to be operating OK. Kent1
