Hi bballfever, welcome to the forum.

Do you still need help with this? The forum has been busy.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

You don't appear to have an antivirus program installed. You can get a free one from any of of these vendors. Download an install only one.

After you have an antivirus program installed.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Thanks
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I still need your help, but am experiencing difficulty downloading anti virus programs. They don't complete their download and are long to download. Is there a way to proceed without the antivirus scan? Thanks.
Hi bballfever Download and run DDS with the instructions posted earlier. It's a very small program. We can install an antivirus pprogram later. Keep in mind that this is an essential program to keeping this machine clean.

Hi Hi bballfever

Strange that Norton (Symantec) didn't show in the HJT log, but it is installed. However it is out of date. Did it expire? We can replace it with a free one if you wish. Please advise.

How long have you had Internet Explorer 8?

Let's start with this

Download and save to your desktop Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Please post back with
  • MBAM log
  • new HJT log
  • answers to questions regarding antivirus and IE8

Thanks

>>>>• answers to questions regarding antivirus and IE8

>>Strange that Norton (Symantec) didn't show in the HJT log, but it is installed. However it is out of date. a) Did it expire? B) We can replace it with a free one if you wish. Please advise.

a) Yes. It expired. Norton (Symantec) software was included free with the computer. However, I chose not to pay annual subscription. Whether it matters or not, my email isn’t saved to my PC for this very reason to decrease the likelihood of downloading viruses.

B) My dialup connection is slow and download of the ANTIVIR or other programs are not completing before reaching 100% download. Plus, I am trying various DOWNLOAD managers which aren’t helping. In the past, I have had such programs for short periods of time (up to one year).

>>How long have you had Internet Explorer 8?

IE8 was updated on 3.20.09 8:46PM approximately.

Thanks for your reply. When my PC rebooted, I noticed my popup which says something like 'Norton is out of date' stopped popping up twice, which was weird. You may have fixed this problem via Antimalware. Thanks!

Please let me know about my HJT log and other things I need to try. Thanks a lot!
Hi

MBAM turned on the Security Center. It has no way of knowing if it was turned off by a person or malware.

Email is only one posible route for infection. Do you know of anyone who can download the antivirus program you want and copy the download to a CD? If so, Norton will need to be completely uninstalled first. We can help you with that.

You have some old vulnerable Java. We'll update it this way to make sure you have the newest downloaded and saved to your desktop before uninstalling the old versions.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13
  • Click the download button on the right.
If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.
  • Select the platform (Windows, in your case), mutli language.
  • Accept the license agreement, click continue.
You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control
  • Scroll down and click on Windows Offline Installation,
  • Save the file jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop;
Do not select Run . Do not install it yet.

When the download is complete, close your browser.

Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
    Java™ 6 Update 2
  • Do not uninstall Java TM 6 Update 13 if found! :yeah:
Reboot your computer.

  • Double-click on the saved file to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

How was your computer before you installed IE8?

Thanks
Dear oldman960: Thank you very much for your latest posting. Latest Java 6 runtime version update 13 was replaced at your advice on my PC, although I was nervous doing so! PC seems to be working great, that is, better doing certain things – page transitions within a website! Other things are the same – going to a web address for the first time. As far as my Norton software, I don’t know yet what I plan to do with it, except leave it turned off. I can’t recall if it’s the version which came on the PC or one from the store. I don’t have someone to make me a CD or DVD of the free antivirus software, but, in the past, when my PC was working correctly I had been able to download it. Java download worked great by the way! By the way, in the past, I had downloaded and then removed AVAST because it was causing my PC to come to a standstill at times. AVG was downloaded as well. I don’t remember what happened or why I may have discontinued (must have been for a similar reason). Before IE8 was installed was when I first posted to your forum, hence my computer had problems prior and not since IE8. I don’t know enough about the situation yet to blame Microsoft for anything their browser has done. Thank you very much for all your very helpful suggestions. If you have any further to say, please let me know. Otherwise, I am very grateful for you telling me about Java and about MBAM especially. Thanks! Kind regards.
Hi bballfever, The problem you had with Avast may very well stem from the fact you still had Norton installed, disabling isn't enough. I would suspect the freezing came from a conflict between the 2 even is Norton seemed to be disabled. There are still some services running. The same would probably happen with any other antivirus program. That may also be a cuase of some of your other problems. I'll see if I can find you a good download manager that will allow you to download one.
Hi bballfever,

Let's have a look and see if there isn't something buried a bit deeper that's preventing the av downloads and internet slowness.

After you download this program, keep your connection on as combofix will try to download and install the Recovery Console. It will notify you if it failed. Please be patient, it may take awhile. Follow the prompts.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Post back with the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks
Thank you very much for your continued help! I realize it's a lot of work to help me and
greatly appreciate it!

> ComboFix and MS Win Recovery Console installed no problem.
> No reboot of PC was required.
> This is the ComboFix.txt file you requested.

* Please note I noticed one time an error message on my PC several days ago about the
—— msfeedssync.exe
having some sort of problem (see .txt file below) when I was logged into the web. Sorry
I didn't write down the message. I don't recall setting up any 'Scheduled Tasks' and didn't
know if it was a sort of malware, but thought it might be MS related. I feel it happened after ie8
was installed but am not 100% sure, so don't know if it's ie8 related or not.

Hi bballfever,

The msfeedssync.exe is MS related and probably set up as a default setting.

http://www.webisee.com/2008/10/21/msfeedss…ble-in-ie7-ie8/

That's a strange error by HJT. Run HJT again and see if it happens again.

I don't see anything in the log to indicate you are infected.

Here's the link to a download manager leechget

Try this and see if browsing is any better.

Make sure all IE browsers are closed
  • click the start button,
  • highlight all programs,
  • highlight accessories,
  • highlight System Tools,
  • click Internet Explorer (no add ons)
This will lauuch IE without any add ones. You will get a popup notifing you that add ons are disabled.

Does the problem persist?

Thanks
Dead oldman960: Thank you for your continuing help and for the info on msfeedssync.exe and leechget download manager which I have not had a chance to try yet. I ran HJT again and didn't get any error message. In running IE8 without addons, I didn't notice a difference. However, overall the browsers now don't seem to be opening very easily/fast. So, I don't know what to say. By the way, I use Firefox mostly, but need to have IE8 working as well. To let you know where I stand overall, unfortunately I have a couple of ** important ** outstanding issues which I'd like to discuss. 1) the WindowsRecovery Manager is still installed?! To let me explain, I had a trouble with my PC login and I had to reboot and it showed in the background. How do I get rid of it? It is now installed thanks to what I did in post #13 following your instructions from post #12. I feel it was there for you to help me debug my system somehow. ** Would you please tell me how to turn Recovery Manager off since you were the one who turned it on? 2) I may have left one piece of vital information out. Occasionally, my PC will freeze on boot up. If I then do a reboot (unplug machine), it will usually boot up okay 2nd time. Obviously this is less than ideal and a very serious problem. It is also one of the reasons I started this thread, although I didn't mention it explicitly. I thought an examination of HJT might have helped, but I might have been wrong and I didn't mean to mislead you by also stating my problems with overall operation of my PC and web browing. ** Any thoughts on resolving this startupproblem or any referrals? Please help with #1 and #2 and let me know where we stand otherwise. Thanks very much.
