[Resolved] Internet Explorer Virus

Hi,

I've had my computer for a few months now, and I have not been able to use Internet Explorer almost since the time I bought it. My brother borrowed it, and I am assuming he downloaded stuff he wasn't supposed to, because ever since that weekend, Internet Explorer windows will randomly pop up. When I exit out of one IE window, my computer freezes for a second before an error message appears, and every IE window open shuts down. I've been using Firefox, and it's working great. I just don't know what to do about the Internet Explorer popups. Every time I try to exit out of one, my computer freezes for a minute, and it's extremely aggravating. Please help!

My name is jpshortstuff. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through the instructions before starting to follow them to amek sure you understand everything you have to do.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Right-click ATF-Cleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator… to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.


Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.
Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.

LimeWire
You have LimeWire, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

I would recommend that you uninstall LimeWire, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.

Please run this online scan, using Internet Explorer with Administrator privileges (Vista users right-click and select Run As Administrator…):

Panda Activescan
  • Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan now button
  • When prompted to install ActiveX control click Install
  • On the update page, click on the security warning at the top of the page and select "Run ActiveX control…"
  • Panda should now start scanning your system.
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the Export To…(with a little notepad icon) button, then Save the report to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log. Please also let me know how things are running now.

I just opened my My Computer folder, found the file you specified, and right-clicked and hit delete. I don't know if that completely erased the file, but I don't know how else to erase it entirely.

That's fine. It wasn't a major threat, just something that could go. It will be removed completely next time you empty your recycle bin.

How's the computer running now?

It seems to be running better, but I still have the problem when I run Internet Explorer. When I open the browser it goes to the pages I need just fine; but when I try to exit out of one of the IE windows a notice saying "Internet Explorer has stopped working, windows is checking for a solution to the problem…" And every IE window I had open will close. I don't know why this is happening.

Hi,

Hmm, that sounds a little odd. Close all Internet Explorer windows. Wait for a few seconds, then click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons). Let me know if you still get the problems when in the 'special' IE mode. Do you get the problem every time you close IE usually?

Please also run DDS again and post the first log it gives (DDS.txt).

Hi,

Hmm, sounds like one of your add-Ons/plug-ins is the cause then. Let's get rid of a couple of things that may be the culprits. You can always re-install them later if you wish.

Right click HijackThis and select Run As Administrator… to open it. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):
O2 - BHO: Yahoo! IE Services Button - {5BAB4B5B-68BC-4B02-94D6-2FC0DE4A7897} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Common\yiesrvc.dll
