Hi,
I recently got infected with some kind of virus that redirects all my google searches to advert sites or similarly random sites. It takes three retries to actually get where I wish to go. I'm pretty good with computers and ran my Mcaffee, Malwarebytes antimalware, spybot and other virus scanners I knew of to try remove this. I even used winutilities to check start up registries and do more cleaning but I can't for the life of me find the stupid thing. Managed to remove some little problems but not stop it.

If anyone can help I would be so thankful.

I'm running Windows XP service pack 3 and below is a copy of my highjackthis log. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure what you've got, but i'd like some more data for my own information, if you'd be so kind.

Will you go to Start > Run…, copy and paste the following into the text box and click OK:

"C:\Program Files\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exe" /ihatewhitelists

Click the "create log" button in HJT as before and let me have the bigger log that HJT produces - if you are really bored, you can compare the two. :smack:

Download a copy of DDS by sUBs from one of the following locations: Link1; Link2; Link3
  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • You can read the screen that appears, or not - the tool runs anyway.
  • When the tool has finished, two Notepad windows will appear.
  • You need to save both as they will disappear when closed.
  • File > Save As… from the Toolbar will allow you to do this.
  • Copy and Paste both logs into your next reply.
  • Please check after posting that both logs are complete.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click the file to run it.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<

You may need to post some of the logs separately, given the size.
Thanks, the new HiJackThis log:

Let me have the contents of the log that appears and also let me know how the computer is behaving now.

What worries me is that it reappears in the startup folder the next time I load up my PC. Could be wrong but it may be something to do with that.

I did notice a change todayy after I disabled nvcpldemon with winutilities from start up. What worries me is that it reappears in the startup folder the next time I load up my PC. Could be wrong but it may be something to do with that.

I'm assuming that this is a nVidia related item, but with the limited information you've supplied, I can't say for sure. You will need to give me exact details as I see no reference to nvcpldemon in your HJT log, so I can't tell what it is you've disabled.

Is the redirection still occurring?
Its been one whole day and no sign of it even with me testing it. Think I may be clean! Thanks so much for all your help, greatly appreciated.
I think a quick scan would be a good idea, just to be sure that nothing else is lurking on the hard drive. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
  • When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
  • If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.
Here is the log from Malwarebytes, nothing detected,

The computer itself is ok, runs a bit sluggish since all this began but not annoyingly so. Also firefox takes much longer to load up than it did before, almost a good 3 or 4 seconds longer.
Computer speed is a problem to resolve as there are so many causes. The following steps will serve as a spring clean for your PC. Not all of them will be of benefit to your PC as this is a general post, but the overall effect should be positive.

1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs that you no longer use and then reboot your PC.

2) Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.

When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please Note: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only.

3) Double click My Computer.
Right click the disc drive you wish to check.
Click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools Tab.
Under Error-checking, click the Check Now button.
In the "Check Disc Local Disk (C:)" dialog box, check both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, and then click Start.

This will look for and attempt to repair any errors that your hard drive has.

4) Defragment your hard drive. A tutorial for disc defragmentation is available here.

5) Download and run StartUp Inspector.
This program will help you to decide exactly what programs you disable from running at startup.
The Readme.txt file included has instructions on how to use it.

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:
  • Go here and click on the Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline link in the Windows section near the top.
  • Save the file somewhere accessible.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any of the following that you can find:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Java™ 6 Update 11
    Java™ 6 Update 3
    Java™ 6 Update 7

  • Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
  • Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.
  • I suggest that you save the installation file, as long as you have the disc space, as it will save you downloading it again should you need to reinstall for some reason. You can also use it on any other computers you have to save bandwidth.

Let me know how you get on.
Seems faster, less issues. I felt it odd that it was so since its running 4GB of Ram, a good processor and loads of space in the C drive lol. Thanks for your help. Is there anything else I should do? One quick question though, I have McAffee but my subscription is about to run out and since I work in a shop that sells some computer software I could get the new Norton for half the price of renewing my subscription to McAffee. Is it just a personal taste to what is better or is one much better than the other?

Is there anything else I should do?

I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Disable System Restore,
Reboot your PC,
Re-enable System Restore,
Create a Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.

Is it just a personal taste to what is better or is one much better than the other?

Personally I use NOD32 and Comodo Free Firewall, but it's an each to their own thing.
HUGE problem! Turned on the pc this morning to find it going to a blue error screen telling me to run chkdisk. Tried loading in safe mode, normal ,last best config etc but always end up at the same screen. Had a look online and it is supposedly common and you need to load the win xp disk and use the recovery console to fix it. Problem is that when I boot from the XP disk it loads then crashes to the same blue screen and forces me to restart the machine! I don't see how I can run recovery if it wont let me access it.
