Here is my HJT log but I dont know if it can tell you anything… Malwarebytes scan detected downloader trojan and deleted it tonight but lately I have had to run Malwarebytes with everytime I am on the computer because Norton Internet InSecurity is not doing its job! Maybe twice out of 15 infections in the last month has Norton actually acted as it should. Also my Adaware free no longer updates nor will it scan… I get error messages. Has it deactivated its "free" status

How can I better protect myself and are there better virus protection software that could be recommended?
Are there other software programs aside from virus protect that you recommend! :wall: ?
Please check my HJT log

Due to the large numbers of HJT logs being posted, there are four things that you need to be aware of.

1) If you have already posted this log at another forum, you need to post here that you have done so and this topic will be closed.
Multiple posting not only ties up valuable resources, but could also result is some unpleasant side-effects for your system if you follow two sets of instructions at the same time.
If, during research, an identical log is identified at another forum, this thread will be closed.

2) If you don't post a meaningful reply to any of my posts within five days, this thread will be closed. Due to limited free time, I can only have so many open threads at any one time and if yours isn't active, somebody else's will be.
If, by omission, the thread hasn't be closed after five days and you post, it will just serve as a reminder to me to close it.
Please note that "I just dropped in to say Hi!" isn't a meaningful reply!

3) Malware removal is a tricky business, and malware writers don't tend to worry about the damage their creations do, so it is advisable to back-up all important files BEFORE we start. Although most cases have a successful conclusion, on occasion things don't go according to plan and it is better to be prepared for the worst.

4) Back-ups can get lost or damaged, so make two if the files are that important to you!

Also my Adaware free no longer updates nor will it scan… I get error messages. Has it deactivated its "free" status

It depends how old your version is. The latest free version is available here.

are there better virus protection software that could be recommended?

This is one of those questions that will get a different answer depending on who you ask. Your PC's security is partly down to the protection it has and partly down to the risks that you expose it to. A free AV can be as effective as a paid-for one if you limit the nasties that you expose your computer to.

I have AVG and AntiVir on two lappys and neither have picked up anything in years, but they don't tend to go anywhere that might offer slime. I run NOD32, as do a number of Helper's, on my Desktop and that hasn't has an infection for years either, so you could argue that i'm wasting my money on it, but I prefer to pay for what I feel is the added security of this AV, particularly because of the places I take the computer due to this "work".

Are there other software programs aside from virus protect that you recommend!

Three thing to do:

1) Open MBAM and post the latest log, under the Logs Tab funnily enough, that contains the downloader trojan detection.

2) Pay a visit to the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 - I.E. is preferred for this scan.
  • Read the Information panel and then click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Both the anti-virus engine and database will need to be downloaded, which may take a little time.
  • Once this has been completed, select My Computer from the Scan section on the left hand side.
  • Put the kettle on!
  • Although it is recommended by Kaspersky that you should disable your anti-virus scanner before starting this scan, it should work OK with it still active - it does on my PC.
Although you may find the scan speed increases if you carry out this step, I never like to disable my resident scanner while online, so I don't.
  • When the scan has completed, click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click Save Report As…
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save and pick a location for the file - the Desktop is always handy.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log, run in Normal Mode, and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

3) Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list… and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.
Here is my Malwarebytes log which as a Trojan Fakealert not downloader as I had thought. I haven't been home to get everything do so I have posted the MB log and off now to get Kaspersky and HJT. As for updating Adaware, I will do that next but let me take care of these steps… I will return. Just to mention… I ran Malwarebytes this morning and it was clean. BTW, this is the only place were I have requested help. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.34 Database version: 1833 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 3/11/2009 12:32:01 AM mbam-log-2009-03-11 (00-32-01).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 65776 Time elapsed: 7 minute(s), 43 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 1 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\XML (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. I just tried to run and download Kaspersky database and followed your instructions. HOWEVER, I tried this FOUR times and midway through each download I would get an error message saying that Program failed to start because I must be online!!! How more online can I be???. It said error: invalid signature! I will go and get Adaware and make the uninstall list for HJT… Do I need to deactivate Norton internet Security? How exactly do I do that!
OK, I updated Adaware Free Anniversary addition and scanned… it found one cookie and deleted it… I clean out my temperary internet files on a daily basis… I saved the unistall list from HJT and also ran a new scan but I still can not get Kaspersky to finish download and scan. At lease here are the logs from HJT.

I dont know why Adaware appears twice on the HJT uninstall list because I uninstalled the older version before downloading the anniversary ed.. At any rate the logs requested are below.

Ad-Aware has probably left an uninstaller entry behind at some point - we'll deal with that later. As to the KAV scan, try this one instead:

Pay a visit to the ESET Online Scanner - IE is required for this.
  • Check the box to accept the Terms of Use.
  • Accept the ActiveX download, Install it and watch it download the required files.
  • Once this has been completed, you will see the Computer Scan box with two options - check ONLY the "Scan unwanted applications" box and then Scan.
  • Once the scan has completed you can see the results under the Details Tab in the Results Window.
There will be a copy of this report saved as log.txt in the C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner folder.
  • Please post the contents of this file in your next reply.
I googled ESET to find the scanner… here is the log: # version=4 # OnlineScanner.ocx=1.0.0.635 # OnlineScannerDLLA.dll=1, 0, 0, 79 # OnlineScannerDLLW.dll=1, 0, 0, 78 # OnlineScannerUninstaller.exe=1, 0, 0, 49 # vers_standard_module=3936 (20090313) # vers_arch_module=1.064 (20080214) # vers_adv_heur_module=1.066 (20070917) # EOSSerial=690b2f895e43d04b93afb7297e1911e5 # end=finished # remove_checked=false # unwanted_checked=true # utc_time=2009-03-14 03:50:30 # local_time=2009-03-13 11:50:30 (-0500, Eastern Daylight Time) # country="United States" # osver=5.1.2600 NT Service Pack 3 # scanned=147636 # found=1 # scan_time=4602 C:\Documents and Settings\Raymond\Local Settings\Temp\7061.exe Win32/Dialer.generic application 9AA9470056E8E3A05806BBFFCBF1C18E

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All". Bear in mind that if you select the Cookies option that this will prevent the automatic logging in to any site that uses cookies to achieve this.
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.
When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:
  • Go here and click on the Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline link in the Windows section near the top.
  • Save the file somewhere accessible.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Environment and then reboot your PC.
  • Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
  • Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.
  • I suggest that you save the installation file, as long as you have the disc space, as it will save you downloading it again should you need to reinstall for some reason. You can also use it on any other computers you have to save bandwidth.

As it stands, that should be the last of the malware that can be identified on your system. I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Disable System Restore,
Reboot your PC,
Re-enable System Restore,
Create a Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.

I went to add/remove but did not find Java 2 Runtime environment but Java 6 Update 7 and update 11. Both are big files… should I delete them?

Also I did download and use the ATF cleaner.
Sorry, my bad! Java changed it's naming convention a while ago and I haven't updated the instructions - uninstall them both as they are out of date.
If my computer has been cleaned why would I want to wait to set a system restore point, wht not now? BTW, I deleted the older versions of Java and installed the new one. Do I need to run another HJT log or any other scan and post those logs?

When System Restore creates Restore Points it may back-up malicious files as part of it's activities and this means that any infected Restore Point that is used will reinstall the malware as well. While this isn't normally desirable, if for some reason your PC develops issues an infected Restore Point is better than none at all. This is why you shouldn't disable System Restore until you are sure that you are clean.
While you are free to create any number of Restore Points, and Windows will create them automatically as well, you will still have infected Restore Points present and this is what flushing System Restore aims to deal with. When you flush System Restore you will lose all Restore Points, so any you create now, before you flush it, will be lost as well.
The reason for waiting for a few days is to ensure that the PC is happy and hasn't suffered any ill effects from the steps that have been taken. Malware isn't designed to be easily removed and it is always possible that a computer will become unstable as a result and this is why you wait to flush System restore. Any fresh Restore Point you create will be after the clean-up, and as a result any issues that your PC may develop will be within these Restore Points, and so using one of them won't solve that particular problem.

Do I need to run another HJT log or any other scan and post those logs?

I have no reason to believe that your PC has any other malware issues that need attention, so there's no need to do any further scans.
OK, Thanks for that explanation… My computer seems much happier and a little faster. We'll take it easy… others in my home are not always savvy about computer use… I printed the tutorial piece about keeping a computer safe and left it here on the desk so that others can read it… hopefully that will be enough for now, Noviciate, You have been an enormous help! Thanks for fighting the computer malware warfare so that ordinary people can go about their cyber world more safely! If anything crops up in the next few days I will return but most likely under a new post. I think you can consider this issue resolved. (I hope I haven't spoken too soon!)
