Last week I discovered that I had virtually no space left on my hard drive. I couldn't think of anything I had downloaded. I eventually discovered on my Add/Remove Programs window that there is an application called "Favorit" taking up 3747 MB of space. This would be the problem. I have gotten it in the last month or so, and I have no idea how an application that size got onto my hard drive through my feeble wireless connection, but there it is. Should I simply uninstall it? Since I don't know what it is, I'm reluctant to perform any action on it, but I don't know what it's doing to my computer or my privacy in the meantime. Many thanks, RainyDayInParis
Hi RainyDayInParis,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

You need to close your thread at Tech Support Guy forum and let them know your being helped here.

  • If Using Firefox, Download to your Desktop and then Double-Click on Icon to start installation.

  • To post the text, first you must highlight the entire text and then press the (Ctrl+C) keys which copies it to your clipboard.
  • Now paste the log into this thread using the (Ctrl + V) buttons.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

RainyDayInParis,

Yep. You have a Trojan on there. These next scans will do some removal and help to further identify issues.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello Tomk,

Many thanks for your help so far. Below are my Malwarebytes log and a new HijackThis log.
The "Favorit" application is still showing up in my Add/Remove programs list.

My computer system seems to be operating normally. I rebooted and it didn't seem to take any longer than usual. I've had no trouble opening applications.

RainyDayInParis,

That was a good start but we didn't get it all.

Open Notepad: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad.
Click on Format and ensure that Wordwrap is unchecked. If it isn't, uncheck it.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Here is the ComboFix log. I should note that when it produced the log, it left my desktop void of icons and I had to restart the machine. Applications and internet seem to be running slower now.

RainyDayInParis,

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
It took three tries to get Kaspersky to download, but on the third time I did get it. Here is the report: ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT Tuesday, March 17, 2009 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 version: 7.0.25.0 Program database last update: Tuesday, March 17, 2009 06:51:55 Records in database: 1919414 ——————————————————————————– Scan settings: Scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan mail databases: yes Scan area - My Computer: C:\ D:\ Scan statistics: Files scanned: 40720 Threat name: 0 Infected objects: 0 Suspicious objects: 0 Duration of the scan: 02:52:11 No malware has been detected. RainyDayInParis, Kaspersky online is quite finicky, but when we can get it to run, it is an awesome scanner. Now I need to know something more about this "Favorit" application. Your scans don't show any application of this name installed in the last 3 months. What more can you tell me about it?
I don't know much about this application. It shows up in my Add/Remove Programs window and that it's 3747 MB, but it doesn't tell me when it was installed. It gives me the option to remove it. I did a search for anything on my hard drive named "Favorit" and there was nothing that came up, even when I searched hidden folders and files. I cannot find a way to even access the application–I couldn't run it if I wanted to. I can't find a shortcut or folder for it in the program files folder of my C: drive, let alone the start menu. But it's obviously somewhere because it's taking up more than a third of my hard drive. I googled it when I first found it, and there is not much out there. What little I found made me think it might be some kind of adware. One person on a forum said they had this application, tried to remove it, and nothing happened. I wish I could tell you more, but I simply don't know how to find where this thing is.
RainyDayInParis,

Let's try this. This tool doesn't do anything, it just gives me some information.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
I just clicked on the dds icon on my desktop, and it tells me the file type is "screen saver" and that it couldn't verify the publisher. Is this right?
RainyDayInParis, We can fix that. ;) Please right click on the icon on your desktop. Select rename Change the last three letters (scr) to com Click somewhere away from the icon Agree that you want to change then double click the icon and continue.
