Saturday night (3/7/09) while I was updating AntiVir I had numerous pop-ups from the anti-virus software stating that I had this infection of TR/Crypt.XPack.Gen. No matter which of the choices I clicked on, the pop-ups came right back up. The system grinded to a halt. I am running Windows XP Home Edition.

There were three files associated with these pop-ups; meyizate.dll, sezadowi.dll and hexydzy.dll - all located
in the C:\Windows\System32 folder. I tried deleting them manually but got an "access denied". I tried booting into
Safe Mode with a command prompt and deleting them with no luck. I downloaded Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool - no luck. I downloaded Avast - no luck. And so here I am.

I followed your instructions in the topic "Before posting a HijackThis Log Self Help" - I changed the folder options in My Computer, I downloaded and ran ATF Cleaner, I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I also downloaded and ran ERUNT and HijackThis. The Anti-Malware program found some stuff, but I'm still seeing two of the three dll files listed above - I don't see them in the C:\Windows\System32 folder anymore, but I do see them when I run AutoRuns and in the HijackThis log. I uninstalled AntiVir and am currently using Avast. Except for seeing these files listed I don't notice any system problems. I'm sure that doesn't mean they don't exist. I think I covered everything. Below are the mbam log and the HijackThis log. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi kunrod3,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Tom -

Thanks for your response.

First a little update. Last night (Sunday) after I had posted I re-ran Malwarebytes - no problems found. Overnight, my Webroot Spy Sweeper,
during it's daily scan found the adware virtumonde. This morning, after seeing the Spy Sweeper notice I re-ran Malwarebytes
and Spy Sweeper - no problems found.

After finding you response I followed your directions - I downloaded ComboFix, I disabled Avast and Spy Sweeper, I ran ComboFix - it installed the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console - and then it did it's scan. Below is the ComboFix log.

kunrod3,

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\letojomu.dll
    c:\windows\system32\notabage.dll
    c:\windows\SwSys2.bmp
    c:\windows\SwSys1.bmp
    c:\docume~1\Davis\LOCALS~1\Temp\krdpdre.sys

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\F]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{29b16419-ec03-11dd-9cd3-001839106225}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{424a0a66-de5a-11dc-9c52-001839106225}]

    Driver::
    krdpdre
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Tom - You mention to …

Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection

I know how to disable Avast.

I don't know if I have script blocking and if I do I don't know how to disable it.

Malwarebytes is the only anti-malware program I have and I don't think it has real-time protection - but I'm not sure.

And you don't mention anti-spyware - should I disable Spy Sweeper like I did before?

Thanks.
kunrod3, Malwarebytes doesn't have any real-time protection. Avast appears to be all you need to worry about. You do it the same as you did to run ComboFix the first time. It's quite possible it is still disabled.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\windows\TEMP\_av_proI.tm~a03444\setup.lok
    c:\windows\Tasks\wrSpySweeper20060215133100.job
    C:\Links Files\linksmod106_final_.zip
    C:\Program Files\Active Desktop Clock\adc.exe

Also please give me a new HijackThis log and let me know how it's running.
Tom - The files below got deleted already. Short story, my sister and her boyfriend were over last night, I had to leave, he's fairly computer savvy, he said he'd run through your instructions for me, I said okay but don't do anything else, he did. Do you want me to still run ComboFix? C:\Links Files\linksmod106_final_.zip C:\Program Files\Active Desktop Clock\adc.exe
Tom - Here are the ComboFix and HJT reports. This is the first time the ComboFix did not reboot the computer(?)

Also please give me a new HijackThis log and let me know how it's running.

The only thing about the HJT scan that seemed different was the speed - it seemed to finish pretty quick(?)

kunrod3,

ComboFix didn't need to reboot that time. It's not a problem. :)

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)

  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

With that done, Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Tom - I ran HJT and "fixed" those five entries. I also ran Combofix /u. Thank you very much for your time and assistance! You guys provide a great service here. I do have some questions. HJT is free? Should I keep that on my PC? Should I run that on a regular basis? Malwarebytes is free to try? Is it worth it to purchase it? Or is there another malware fighter that maybe prevents malware from getting on the PC in the first place? I haven't read your three suggested links yet, but I will, so my apologies if these questions are answered there?! Also, AntiVir is the program that discovered my problem in the first place - I uninstalled it because the multiple notices I was getting crippled my system. Your recommendation; - should I go back to AntiVir, stay with Avast or is AVG a better option? Lastly, is there a particular browser that is more secure? I have Firefox, IE and Google Chrome. I use Firefox regularly, IE once in a while and Chrome only occasionly. I also downloaded Opera, but haven't installed as of yet. Once again, thanks Tom - it's a big relief to know that things are back to "normal". :)
kunrod3, HJT is free. Doesn't hurt anything to have as long as you don't "play" with it. It is possible to bork your system. The only good reason for keeping it is if you had a problem and couldn't get on the internet to download a new copy - you could run what you have and post the log to the forum. This would require you to transfer the text file to a different computer, using some sort of removable media, and post from the computer that did have internet access. By the same token, if you had this situation without already having HJT, you could download on a different computer and transfer to the problem computer and then run. Your choice but it definitely won't hurt to delete it. Mbam is free. You can purchase if you want automatic updates and scheduled scans. Keep the free version for sure. Update it and run it once a month. It has no "real-time" component so it will not interfere with anything else you have. I have Avira and am happy with it. I have installed AVAST on computers of friends and have been happy with it and I know people who wouldn't use anything else. I used to use AVG. I currently think it's a resource hog and don't specifically recommend it. And lasly, I typically use Firefox. The bottom line with browser security is the person running the keyboard. Malware writers target the products that are used the most. Obviously, this allows them to cause pain and suffering to the greatest number of people. The security "bump" you get from using "3rd party" browsers is vastly overshadowed by browsing habits. If someone frequents crack and warez sites, they will get infected. The security programs in place and the browser used will not make a difference. Any further questions?
Hey Tom - I forgot to ask about the other two programs you had me download, ERUNT and ATF. Should I uninstall them or keep them around like HJT? Thanks again.
