Hello, I'm working on a friend's computer. It seemed to have the normal array of crud on it, including fake infection alerts etc… I ran Ad-aware and deleted the one critical infection it found, which seemed to stop the fake alerts. However, when I tried to run HijackThis and Spybot, they wouldn't load, either in safe or regular mode. No luck. When I tried to download a new version of HijackThis, I kept getting redirected away from download site. Also, I cannot access whatthetech.com or bleepingcomputer.com, as I keep getting redirected to a web site that says "Internet explorer cannot display the web page." I checked the hosts file, but it looked normal. The fake alerts have stopped, but there's definitely something wrong here. I'm posting this message from a separate computer since I am not able to access your web site from the infected one. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, 111mike
Hi,

Please try and download and run this program:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

If necessary, transfer it over to the infected computer via a USB stick.

If that doesn't work, give this one a go:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
and post both logs it gives.

Thanks.

Hi,

I take it ComboFix didn't run on the infected machine?

First thing to try is to rename ComboFix.exe to Combo-Fix.exe. Do this before transferring it to the infected machine and then try and run it.

If that doesn't work, please try this program:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

If neither of them work, please let me know exactly what happens when you try and run them.

Thanks.
sorry, forgot to mention combofix wouldn't work. Ok. renamed combo. It worked. Here is the log. Have a question though. After running combo, spybot resident gave me several warnings for registry changes that were trying to be made. I denied them all. Didn't know what to do. Thought I had disabled spybot resident, at least it wasn't showing in tray. Should i have allowed these changes to take place?

thanks,

Hi,

Good, we are making progress. My bad, I didn't mention Spybot may ask for changes. No worries, we will run CF again anyway.

You need to disable TeaTimer, so that it doesn't interfere with our fix.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, click once on Resident Protection, then right-click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For both versions :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go to the bottom of the vertical panel on the left, click Tools
  • Then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\123478687123.dat

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.
Please try the Internet after this, let me know if it works.

Thanks.
Here ye be,

Can now access Whatthetech and Bleepingcomputer. Hijackthis now works. Here are the logs.

Hi 111mike

Log looks good

Click Start >> Run, and then type ComboFix /u and hit enter.
You can now delete any other tools I had you download and use, unless you wish to keep them.

Re-enable TeaTimer:
  • Open Spybot
  • Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
  • Click on Resident.
  • Check Resident "TeaTimer" box.
  • Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with:
  • Entry: SpybotSD Teatimer
  • Click on Mode, select Default mode
  • Close Spybot
Now that your system appears to be clean, there's just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:

SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
    Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein: So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Glad we could be of assistance.

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.

Stay Clean!

question: when enabling tea timer, pop-up with "allow change" for Entry "MS AntiSpyware 2009" came up. What should I do? Allow or Deny? Didn't quite understand this part:

# Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with:
# Entry: SpybotSD Teatimer

I think from now on I'm going to keep tea timer disabled. I can never understand when to allow or deny changes. In other words, is it a malicious program trying to change my registry, in which case I should deny change, or is it spy bot trying to tell me of something it itself is doing to prevent infection, in which case I should allow a change. This has always been confusing for me. so, in this case, is spy bot asking me to allow a change we have made while fixing this computer, in which case I should allow, or is it trying to tell me that the malicious software claiming to be"MS AntiSpyware 2009" is once again trying to make a change to computer, in which case I should deny. don't know if that made any sense, was just wondering if you could help clear this up for me before I disable it completely.

thanks,

**Note: think I understand now. After editing this post and re-reading your bulleted list regarding spy bot, I'm fairly certain that I'm supposed to deny this change and allow only changes related to the entry # Entry: SpybotSD Teatimer. Is this correct? I'll wait for your reply.
Good question to be honest, Spybot is good at getting in the way, though it is a good prevention program. Does it say that the entry is being removed or added? If it is removed, then we want to allow the change, if it is being added then we want to deny it.
it said removed so i allowed change. now i have one that says: Change: Value changed Entry: Search Page Old data: google.com New data: microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=
ok. i allowed change. kept getting allow/deny popups. here is the log. these are the ones i either allowed or changed. is this ok? 3/10/2009 10:21:11 AM Allowed (based on user decision) value "AutoRun" (new data: "") deleted in Command processor! 2009-03-10 12:14:02 Denied (based on user decision) value "DisableCMD" (new data: "0") added in Disable Command! 3/10/2009 12:20:17 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "MS AntiSpyware 2009" (new data: "") deleted in System Startup user entry! 3/10/2009 12:20:19 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "Search Page" (new data: "http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch") changed in Browser page! 3/10/2009 12:20:20 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "Search Bar" (new data: "") deleted in Browser page! 3/10/2009 12:20:21 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "Search Page" (new data: "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896") changed in Browser page! 3/10/2009 12:20:22 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "Default_Search_URL" (new data: "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896") changed in Browser page! 3/10/2009 12:20:22 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "load" (new data: "") deleted in NT startup! 3/10/2009 12:20:53 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "scrnsave.exe" (new data: "") deleted in Desktop settings! 3/10/2009 12:20:54 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "DisableRegistryTools" (new data: "0") added in Disable Registrytool! 3/10/2009 12:20:54 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "DisableTaskMgr" (new data: "") deleted in Disable Taskmanager!
