Computer had been working fine for a while, until about two days ago. Now it has grinded to a near halt.

If I restart the computer normally, the computer will cycle through the start-up process and icons will cycle through the system tray. When it seems "done" if I try to start IE it will just freeze up. Other programs will run slowly for a couple of minutes and then they freeze up. System resources are being maxed out after just a couple of minutes (100% usage, holds steady).

I can restart the computer in "safe mode" with Windows Domain Controllers only and it will work just fine. That is how I managed to get this message in. If I try to restart wtih normal start-up though…freezes up.

I took the liberty of doing a HijackThis! Log and a MalwareBytes Log, here they are:

Just in case its a SOFTWARE conflict, here is a list of APPLICATIONS…if I can delete any redundancies or things that could be causing a conflict on start up, please make a recommendation…it would be greatly appreciated!

I believe I have successfully fixed this problem on my own, therefore I would ask that this thread be closed (unless somone notices a glaring problem). Thanks. I will probably post a new message in a couple of days about my wifes computer though…now IT is acting up! Russ Fontaine
RussF92767,

Glad to hear things are better.

I noticed this:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java™ 6 Update 11
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 4
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 7
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12…allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. [external image: Posted Image]
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings… button
  • click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave all 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Settings
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Tomk, Thanks. That was one of the things I did to help fix some of the problems I was having. I noticed I have Windows Media Player 10 and 11…I know this isn't the proper forum for this but do I really need both or can I eliminate the older of the two? Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. RussF
Not unless there is some other redundancy I can eliminate in my programs…or something useless. I >think< I have eliminated all the stuff I don't use at least from time to time… Wife's computer is acting up though, and after this topic is shut down, I will probably post about hers. :( Maybe I should have been a IT person instead… B) Russ F
