[Closed] How do I update HJT without internet access?

I tried to post my HJT log, but it was kicked out and I was redirected to a page that said to update to the latest version. I have no access to the internet on my infected computer. My email works and I emailed my HJT log from my infected computer to my laptop so I could post the log from my laptop. Since I cannot download anything from the net on my infected computer, how can I update to the latest HJT version? Plz advise. Thanks.
Hi katsrock, welcome to the forum.

Please be advised, as I'm still in training, all my replies will have to be approved by a teacher or expert before I can post them. This may cause some delays, but I will do my best to keep them as short as possible.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.
I will post back soon with additional instructions.

Thanks
Hi Katsrock,

First check that your browser is not set to Work Offline

Open your browser, click file. If there is a checkmark beside Work Offline, click it to clear the checkmark.

If you have a CD or USB device like a thumb drive, you can download the new version of Hijackthis to your laptop and use either a CD or USB device to transfer it to the infected computer.

You can get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from HERE

If that's not possible, use the log that you tried to post before. Before you post it, please remove the top line.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis vx.xx.x (where the x.xx.x is the version #)

Then try to post it

Thanks
Hello oldman960,

Thanks for your help!

I verified my browser was not set to "Work Offline".

Here's the log I tried to post before, minus the top line (BTW my version is 1.99.1):

Thanks.
Hi katsrock,

Good. We can transfer some tools.

Download these 3 tools and transfer them to the desktop of the infected computer.

LSP-Fix.zip

and

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

and

Download ERUNT from Here

Once you have them on the desktop,

  • Double click erunt-setup.exe to install the program
  • Follow the prompts, and then uncheck Create NTREGOPT desktop icon at the Additional Tasks screen.
  • Click No when you are prompted about creating an ERUNT entry in the startup folder.
  • At the next screen, uncheck Show documentation and check Launch ERUNT
  • If ERUNT doesn't start by itself, launch it from the desktop shortcut.
  • At the configuration screen, make sure all 3 checkboxes are checked
  • Click Ok to run the backup process
  • When prompted, click YES to create a new folder.
  • Progress bars will show backup status.
  • A confirmation window will popup when complete. Click OK to close

double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, uncheck Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, if checked, then click Finish.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Try to connect to the internet. If you can't…..

Right click LSP-Fix.zip that you download earlier, click Extract here.
  • Double click LSPfix.exe to run it
  • write down the file names shown in the left hand box.
  • click finish
Reboot and try the internet again.

Please post back with
  • MBAM log
  • filename list from LSPfix
  • a new HJT log taken after the other steps are done.
Let us know how things are.

Thanks
Followed your instructions. Still no internet. It seems like it downloads the IE page, then is blocked at the last moment and the "IE cannot display the page" shows up. Is it possible the firewall is blocking??

Thanks.
Hi

It's possible it is a firewall, IF you have a firewall besides Windows firewall. However, there is also an unknown file in your connection.

The other thing you have is AVG and Norton (Symantec) installed. I take it you are no longer using Norton?

Sorry, I missed that Teatimer was running. Please disable it then re-run MBAM.

To disable Teatimer

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine fully for the changes to take effect.

Next

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall anything with Symantec or Norton in the name.

Then Download the Norton Removal Tool from HERE and and transfer to the infected computer.

Next Double click on Norton_Removal_Tool.exe to run the tool.

Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Your internet probably won't be restored, but I would like to remove all possible conflicts before going after that file.

Please post back with a the MBAM log and a new HJT log.

Thanks
Hello oldman960,

I have been having problems with Spybot for some time, so I uninstalled it. (I'll re-install after this infection is cured)

I got rid of all Norton/Symantec programs and ran the removal tool.

You are correct, my IE is not restored.

Hi

Thanks and sorry about that. There is some evidence of rootkit activity. So we'll get your connection going and have a look. And that's fine about uninstalling Spybot.

Please be advised that some of the identified infections may have backdoor capabilities.

I suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Now for that file.

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark these lines, if present

Close ALL other windows/browsers and click Fix Checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

Double click LSPfix to run it
  • Check the box beside I know what I'm doing
  • Click on logwtime.dll to highlight it
  • Click the >> button
  • The file should now be in the right hand box
  • Click the Finish
You should recieve a Repairs summary window, click ok to close it.

You should now be able to connect to the internet.

Next, let's look deeper. Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt (Where %systemdrive% is usually C: or the drive that you have installed Windows). Post that in your next reply.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with
  • Rooter log
  • combofix log
  • new HJT log
If you have any problems, please let me know.

Thanks
Hello, I followed your steps to "You should now be able to connect to the internet." After performing the LSPfix, I still get "IE cannot display the webpage". Should I continue on with the Rooter.exe step, etc.? Thanks.
Hi katsrock,

Yes, please do. Hold off on combofix.

Run this tool after Rooter and post the Rooter log and the HaxFix log.

Download haxfix.exe
and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"

A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
E. Exit Haxfix

  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.

Thanks
Hello, Too late. I ran rooter then combofix per your initial instructions. Combo fix rebooted then showed a screen that said it was preparing a log file. It suddenly rebooted again and no log was shown. I re-opened combofix and there was no way to access the previous log. All it would do was re-run the program, so I quit the program. How should I proceed now? Re-run rooter then haxfix.exe? Please advise.
Hi katsrock

That's fine. Look at C:\combofix.txt for the combofix log. Post it if you find it.

Just post the Rooter log you have and run Haxfix. Please include a new HJT log also.

If you can not connect yet, I'd like you to try this

Open Internet Explorer
  • click Tools
  • click Internet Options
  • Click the Connections tab
  • Click the LAN Settings button.
  • Uncheck the checkbox near the bottom that says "Use a proxy server…".
  • Click Apply and OK.
IE work now?
Thanks
