Hi Jenna,

You seem to have picked up something new.

One or more infections have been identified as a password stealer and/or keylogger

I strongly suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Close all windows then double click on AVZ.exe
  • Click File > Custom scripts
  • Copy & paste the contents of the following codebox in the box in the program
  • Do Not copy the word CODE
    begin
    SearchRootkit(true, true);
    SetAVZGuardStatus(True);
     TerminateProcessByName('c:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware\aawservice.exe');
     DelBHO('{00009E9F-DDD7-AA59-AA7D-AA4B7D6BE000}');
     StopService('Start2Driver');
     DeleteService('Start1Driver');
     StopService('Start1Driver');
     DeleteService('Start2Driver');
     QuarantineFile('C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\abq23xd6.SYS','');
     BC_DeleteFile('C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\abq23xd6.SYS');
     BC_DeleteFile('Start2Driver.sys');
     BC_DeleteFile('Start1Driver.sys');
     BC_DeleteFile('C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscorewr.dll');
    BC_ImportDeletedList;
    ExecuteSysClean;
    BC_Activate;
    RebootWindows(true);
    end.

  • Note: When you run the script, your PC will be restarted
  • Click Run
  • Restart your PC if it doesn't do it automatically,

Next

Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
  • Chose from the "File" menu, "Standard Scripts"
  • Put a check next to item 2: Advanced System Investigation
  • Click Execute selected scripts
  • At the next prompt, click the OK button
  • Let the scan run and click "OK" when the completion prompt pops up
  • Now Close out of the Standard Scripts window, and exit AVZ
  • Navigate to the avz4 folder and locate the folder LOG
  • Inside the LOG folder you will find virusinfo_syscheck.htm and virusinfo_syscheck.zip
  • Attach virusinfo_syscheck.zip to your next reply along with a new HJT log

Thanks
Oh dear. Sounds horrendous. I will do my best.

Hi Jenna,

We got some of it, but some is being stubborn.

We need some file informantion
  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path, "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\abq23xd6.SYS
  • Click on the Upload button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Try to run combofix again.

Post back with
  • Virus Scan results
  • combofix log
  • new HJT log

Thanks
Cant do the VirSCAN thing- it says "Error: Cant find upload file".

However I HAVE managed to run Combofix- hurray! However since running computer is VERY VERY slow. Is this normal for a while?

Logs below. Thanks for your patience

Hi Jenna,

I not sure why your computer slowed down. Combofix removed part of what was causing your redirects. We'll remove the rest and see what happens.

Please follow all previous instructions regarding security programs.

Open a new Notepad session
  • Click the Start button, click run
  • in the run box type notepad
  • click ok
  • In the notepad, Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not checked.
  • Copy and paste all the text in the code box below into the Notepad. Do Not copy the word CODE
Do Not copy the word CODE

KillAll:

File::
c:\windows\system32\msrfcint.dat
c:\windows\system32\ntrdectr.dat
c:\windows\system32\mscomct2.dat
c:\windows\system32\drivers\Start1Driver.SYS
c:\windows\system32\drivers\Start2Driver.SYS

Registry::
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
"aux"="wdmaud.drv"

Driver::
Start1Driver
Start2Driver

In the notepad
  • Click File, Save as…, and set the Save in to your Desktop
  • In the filename box, type (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFScript.txt"
  • Click save
Using your mouse left button, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the ComboFix.exe icon as shown below.

This will start ComboFix again.Close all browser/windows first.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Please post back with
  • combofix log
  • new HJT log
Any improvement?

Thanks

Slowness of computer went away after a couple of restarts- and, dare I say it, redirect problem seems to be solved for the moment!!! Yay! Does everything look ok on the logs?
————————————————————————–
Hi Jenna,

So far so good, you do fine work. One more scan just to be sure.

What are you currently using for an antivirus program?

First go to add/remove programs and uninstall

Java™ 6 Update 6

Do Not uninstall Java™ 6 Update 11

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Desktop is a good place.
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks

Thank you. The Kapersky scan seemed to find something else?

Im not sure what, if any, anti virus software is on this computer- hence the problems no doubt! There is the Lavasoft Ad-aware thing but that is all I can find.

Have we got rid of the thing that was stealing all my internet banking passwords yet?
Hi Jenna,

The Kaspersky detection is just something we've all ready removed, nothing to worry about. The password thief is gone.

It looks like Symantec (Norton) was on this computer at one time and has been partially uninstalled. While you are here, we will get you fixed up with a new FREE one. After you have done this, we'll clean up and I'll quit annoying you.

You can get a free antivirus program from any of these 3 vendors. Download only one and save it to your desktop. Do not install it yet.

Next, Click to download the Norton Removal Tool from HERE and save it to your desktop. You will use it later.

Please copy and paste these instructions into a notepad and save it to your desktop as you will be off line for the next part.

Disconnect from the internet completely, pull the plug on the modem if necessary.

Next double click Norton_Removal_Tool.exe to run the tool.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

When the tool has finished, reboot and installl your new antivirus program.

Next, make sure your Windows firewall is turned on,

Click start, click control panel, click Security Center. At the bottom of Security Center click windows firewall. Ensure it is set to On.

Please obtain a new HJT log after you have finished and post it in your next reply.

Thanks
You have been really helpful and I am most grateful.

Hi Jenna,

You're most welcome.

Looks good. If no problems, we'l clean up our tools. [external image: Posted Image]

These steps will remove the tools, their quarantined files and restet your restore points.

Open the AVZ4 program, go to File > Standard scripts > Check #6 "Delete all drivers and reg keys"
Press OK/Enter

From your desktop, please delete
  • any notepads/logs that we created
  • Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Click the Start button, click Run. Copy and paste the following line into the run box and click OK
Combofix /u

Open OTListIt2 then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTListIt wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it regularly.

Updates and upgrades

* If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 5 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. You have some of those all ready.

You should also use Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.

- SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Besides the Hosts file information, there are links to a very good updated hosts file, a host file manager. and some programs that can protect your hosts file.
HOSTS

Please read the info on disabling the DNS Client before installing a custom hosts file.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.

Click FIREWALL for tips, reviews and links to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware)

-Secure your Internet Explorer

  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
