[Resolved] Vundo Problem

Hi, I have had a persistent Vundo malware problem for about a week. I keep thinking it's gone but then it flares up again. It continues to disable my Windows Firewall and Automatic Updates as well as popup ad windows. I tried using the self-help but the VundoFix found no problems. Please help!! I have already downloaded HiJackthis Thanks!

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi Tomk, Shortly after my initial post I restarted my computer. However, when it rebooted it was essentially crippled. I was unable to access the internet and my McAfee virus scan and Windows firewall were inoperable. I talked to Lenovo support staff and was advised to re-image my computer to factory settings. It appears to be fine now, but I am worried that the data I recently backed up onto an external harddrive is infected. Before I upload that data to my reformatted computer, can you advise me on how to make sure it is clean, or how to clean it? It is very, very important data. Thank you, tombombca

Make sure that your external hard drive is connected.
Download Malwarebytes per earlier instructions. However, after updates are downloaded, select Full Scan. You will be prompted to select what drives to scan. Select them all making sure your external hard drive is included. Then go ahead and run the scan. It will take a couple hours probably. Post the report back here per earlier instructions.

The full scan is currently running.

I just wanted to let you know that when I plugged in the external harddrive to my laptop I immediately had a virus detection by McAfee. Here is the output:

My laptop appears to be running normally except McAfee is scanning very slowly. It also says 33 threats detected, 0 cleaned, and 7 deleted.

Those entries from McAfee are in your restore files but are from Malwarebytes quarantine. They are not a risk at this time.

Let's run a tool to take care of the risk of the autorun.inf that you initially found. This will just make sure that it's not a problem.

Please download Flash Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the
    utility to clean up those drives as well. Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that is plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Then let me know what McAfee finds in the scan that it sounds like you currently have running.

Tomk, I tried to download the program twice, but McAfee is blocking it or something. MCAFEE ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a [external image: Posted Image] sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Exit."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on "Yes" to disable the Antivirus guard.
You succesfully disabled the McAfee Guard.

Now go ahead and run Flash_Disinfector.exe

Tomk, I ran Flash_Disinfector.exe and then rebooted (which was slow) I am now running a full scan (including external harddrive). The only thing it has detected and deleted so far is Flash_Disinfector.exe from my desktop :wacko:

tombombca, Alot of the tools we use in malware removal are targeted by Anti-virus programs. It's because of the way that they work. I'm confidant that Flash_Disinfector.exe is virus free.

I understand Tomk. Of note: The onscreen Windows menus are not resolving properly, and the McAfee VirusScan Console menu is stuck on the screen and not responding (bottom right) —> see attached image The scan is going smoothly, however. Next steps?
