Hi again guys, well I awoke this morning, turned my PC on and did a MalwareBytes scan as is my Normal routine now. Low and behold Vundo showed again…. All I can figure is the people that are staying with us at the moment, they are checking their emails on my PC……
I have been very scrupulous since my last infection…… So Malwarebytes scanned and removed. But can I get you guys to check these logs for me….

As Always Many thanks in advance….

Due to the large numbers of HJT logs being posted, there are four things that you need to be aware of.

1) If you have already posted this log at another forum, you need to post here that you have done so and this topic will be closed.
Multiple posting not only ties up valuable resources, but could also result is some unpleasant side-effects for your system if you follow two sets of instructions at the same time.
If, during research, an identical log is identified at another forum, this thread will be closed.

2) If you don't post a meaningful reply to any of my posts within five days, this thread will be closed. Due to limited free time, I can only have so many open threads at any one time and if yours isn't active, somebody else's will be.
If, by omission, the thread hasn't be closed after five days and you post, it will just serve as a reminder to me to close it.
Please note that "I just dropped in to say Hi!" isn't a meaningful reply!

3) Malware removal is a tricky business, and malware writers don't tend to worry about the damage their creations do, so it is advisable to back-up all important files BEFORE we start. Although most cases have a successful conclusion, on occasion things don't go according to plan and it is better to be prepared for the worst.

4) Back-ups can get lost or damaged, so make two if the files are that important to you!

Pay a visit to the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 - I.E. is preferred for this scan.
  • Read the Information panel and then click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Both the anti-virus engine and database will need to be downloaded, which may take a little time.
  • Once this has been completed, select My Computer from the Scan section on the left hand side.
  • Put the kettle on!
  • Although it is recommended by Kaspersky that you should disable your anti-virus scanner before starting this scan, it should work OK with it still active - it does on my PC.
Although you may find the scan speed increases if you carry out this step, I never like to disable my resident scanner while online, so I don't.
  • When the scan has completed, click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click Save Report As…
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save and pick a location for the file - the Desktop is always handy.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log, run in Normal Mode, and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list… and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

The files marked with * are legitimate files that have been incorrectly identified as the Vundo trojan.
The very first two are for items that are held within System Restore, and could very well be copies of one or more of the files marked with a * - I can't tell from the limited information given in the scan.
The last item I can't identify, but you may know more about it.

You need to go to the Quarantine Tab in MBAM and Restore all the files, and then update and scan with MBAM again. Don't have it fix anything just yet, just post the scan results and we'll see what is detected. The new definitions should solve the false positives and we'll take it from there.
Hi there Noviciate, hmmm I Restored all the files that MBAM Quarantined on the 6th. Updated and ran MBAM again. There was nothing noted? So what and how did this happen???? were these all false positives? I am glad I did not panic, and do what was asked by whatever it was… there are a couple of posts here with the same symptoms I had that morning.

Is the HJT log look OK? or are there things that could be dealt with there?

Cheers

So what and how did this happen????

Consider the definitions that a scanner uses to be descriptions of wanted individuals. The police will arrest anyone that resembles one of these people. Sometimes the description just happens to be close enough to somebody else that the police pick up the wrong man.
Whether a scanner uses definitions, or heuristics, or a combination of the two, false positives are just an unfortunate part of life. Your AV, McAfee, has picked up HijackThis on at least two occasions as malicious that I know of.

were these all false positives?

It would appear so.

there are a couple of posts here with the same symptoms I had that morning.

Same defs, same problem.

Is the HJT log look OK?

Yup.

are there things that could be dealt with there?

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:
  • Go here and click on the Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline link in the Windows section near the top.
  • Save the file somewhere accessible.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Environment and then reboot your PC.
  • Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
  • Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.
  • I suggest that you save the installation file, as long as you have the disc space, as it will save you downloading it again should you need to reinstall for some reason. You can also use it on any other computers you have to save bandwidth.
Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.
Hi, Thanks for the quick reply. I have downloaded the updated Java. Now just so I,m on the right track I have loaded a screenshot of the Add/Remove programs with the old java there, now do I remove all of these entries? With the AV I,m running " McAfee" do you think that Comondo might be a better option? I have Comondo on my kids PC and nothing seems to get through it, I like the fact that any program has to be either let out onto the web… would it be a safer option than McAfee?? your thoughts?

Your choice, as i've not use either. I'd go with the one that you feel the most comfortable with, both in ease of use and effectiveness.
Hi there, I have done what you asked. Java was removed, and updated version installed. Is there anything else I need to address from the latest HJT log??

Cheers.
