I posted another topic from my home computer, and am now working on my work computer. Running XP SP3, IE7.

I have been getting error messages trying to update the Anti-Spyware portion of my software package, and notice that the computer is running, running, running …(disk access is constant) and response is slow.

So,
  • I ran UniBlues Registry Booster and
  • defragged the registry,
  • then a system cleanup and
  • a drive defrag.
  • Checked the start-up programs, and finally
  • ran HJT.

There are two entries that are suspicious looking to me: People Pal Toolbar and issas.exe. Maybe you see others.
The HJT log follows.
Thanks for your help.

Hi there and welcome - your log is difficult to read as you have wordwrap selected in notepad could you untick it for all your posts from now on

and am now working on my work computer

Please check with your IT department before doing any of the following as they may not like outsiders looking at your system and they may have protocols in place for these types of infection.

If you are given the all clear

I can see evidence of Bagel and a mailing worm there so I will use a rather large hammer to start with

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Here's the "real-time" log from CA Anti-Virus"

Hi again - due to the nature of some of the tools I use some Antivirus programmes throw a hissy fit and call them trojans. But they are safe and are not out to ruin your day. So yes please disable your AV for the duration of the run for this tool (combofix) only otherwise it will be unable to function properly
Hello,
I'm posting ComboFix.txt and a new HJT.log, as you requested. If you want any of the other logs produced by Combo Fix, just let me know. Thanks, much. -SusanT

Status of the machine:
I am still getting notified by CA that it cannot download and install a couple of updates
for my Spyware. I think, looking at thier Knowledgebase, (and since I have been unable to
locate a "real person" to speak orwrite to, that my only option is to uninstall and reinstall.

The continual disk-seek has improved; however, I think I probably need to install more
RAM

Question: I note that files that I have uploaded are being downloaded. Is there any
reason why any of you would be downloading other than the person who has helped me? I am concerned,
and wonder if it might not be better for me to go back and delete files I've previously uploaded?

Thanks!
SusanT
The downloads are myself and a student learning how to use the analysis tool, plus without the parsing tool they will not make a lot of sense to anyone :)

But if you wish you can delete the attachment by editing your relevant post

To check out how much and what type of RAM you can get (plus prices ) Go to Crucial Scanner and run the Active X

A re-install of CA would be a good plan but download the new copy first. Then uninstall/reinstall offline

Subject to no further problems

Now the best part of the day —– Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…Download and run this small programme and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SuperAntispyware Run weekly to keep your system clean
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

Hello, again. Sorry for the delay. Sunday I do church and am busy, Mondy is my day off. Here it is late afternoon on the West Coast, so naturally, you're finished with your day across the pond. Too many to do's on the list. I cleaned up down to the point where I was supposed to install Sun Microsystems' JavaRa. It blows up with a data exception. I'm going to try the reinstall of the Anti-Spyware portion of this Computer Associates (CA) Suite, on the theory that since I can't update it properly it may be a problem. Then, I'll either reset the system restore point if I haven't heard from you, or we can try the JavaRa again. Thanks so much! - SusanT
No problem on that, we can do it manually

Go to add remove programmes and uninstall all versions of Java prior to to update 10 then download and install the latest version

Let me know of your progress
Hello again, I was able to complete the list you gave me. Here's my concern. I purchased CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 which includes all the "bells and whistles." It has been installed on this machine actually since 2007 when I first downloaded their free program, and have upgraded each year. This past week, I've been trying IN VAIN to get support from them. For some time now, I've been getting a report on the updates for the Anti-Spyware portion that it could not update the "CLEAN" file and the "SIGNATURES" file. I began "chatting" with them …and it is totally insane!! Sparing you the grusome details, if I uninstall the program, I am concerned that I won't be able to reinstall (it is a downloaded module) ..because quite frankly their web site is a "rat;'s maze". Normally, I'd just move on to another product, but since I just paid USD 60 for this, I'm reluctant. I've scanned this machine with everything possible and it all comes back clean ..including your bird's eye view. But, even with the correct password, I cannot log on to the CA Security site, and I keep getting these error report. So, ….what would you advise? Other than this, I think we're done. I have ordered more RAM, and will schedule the programs to run you suggested. I just don't see why CA Security Suite is giving me such problems. SusanT
Lets see if thos fixes it :)

Download the trial version from here
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall your current copy - reboot
Install the trial version - reboot
Enter you licence key

Let me know if that works
Hello again, I was able to download and reinstall my Security Software. I won't be back in the office now until Tuesday, but I believe everything is fine. CA appears to be updating, and I left the machine on to run scans and update, etc. Thanks so much for your help through this process. SusanT
