Hello and welcome to Posted Image

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your HJT log now, I will post back shortly with instructions.
No worries, I am accustomed to the happenings around here, including the cut and past info of being a newb. Who ya working with as for checking accuracies? Let me know what is up when you can.
Hi matthewp,

I've had a look through your log and there are no signs of any Malware.

However, just to be sure, I would like you to run a couple of scans

First

MALWAREBYTES ANTIMALWARE

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Post the log here in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

NEXT

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCAN

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

I have noticed that HJT did put its self into my applications folder and did not go into the self named folder in C:// Is that a problem, I know it used to be.
Other then that all looks good and thanks
Hi Matthewp

Good news, your computer is clean of any malware

There is one tiny house keeping item we can take care of:

  • Please open HiJackThis
  • Click on Do a system scan only
  • Check the box next to ONLY the entry listed below (if still present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.

I have noticed that HJT did put its self into my applications folder and did not go into the self named folder in C:// Is that a problem

C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Your HJT is exactly where it is supposed to be

Now that is done, you are good to go.
:)

Keep the MalwareBytes program, it is an excellent 'on demand' scanner - make sure you update it before a scan so it downloads all the latest virus definitions.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections in the furure.

  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.
  • SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
    Here
If you choose to use Firefox, I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.
    • NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
    • McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling
  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
  • Please read the guide by Rorschach112 on how to prevent malware and about safe computing here

Stay Safe

I am about to store this computer for a while and have deleted many files and applications in prep for this.
I am believing there is no mal/spy ware on here but wanted to double check.

As I stated in my previous post, I am planning on storing the computer, so I should not get it infected anytime soon. (I hope)
I have gone to the imac and a macbook and plan on learning that system for a bit. I will always have windows for/as a backup since it has been faithful to me, but it will most likely only hold data such as images, Might be on over rated external hard drive!

Thanks for the help. I do have another computer I will be doing this too and sadly it is likely to be in worse shape. You might work with me on that one too. You have done a great job and I thank you for it. I know the trainging can be intensive and I commend you on your dedication. You have me in and out in no time, like my favorite person here, LDTate, or Mr. Tate as I like to call him with respect. He is the best!

Thanks again for all the work.

Here you go cat
This is on my xp home not pro. this might be a bit more of a problem and so I am doing nothing as of yet but the HJT. I already see an issue or two that needs fixing but that is me. anyways, here is my log:

Oh yes. I want to delete many programs on here too so is it fine if I do that in the process of waiting on replys etc? Either way, I can do it all now or later.
M
I would prefer it if you would just hang on for a bit for the deletion of programs till we know what might be lurking on the machine, so we don't change the environment too much…perhaps you could give me an uninstall list form HJT…then I can have a look as well Open HJT click on the the Misc. Tools button and give me the log from the uninstall list - Thanks
Hi matthewp

No indications of malware present in this computer either, just some minor housekeeping to do and we'll have a look with MBAM and Kaspersky as well, just incase.

  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer. (version 6, update 12)

  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <—- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi

Your MBAM log shows 'no action taken'

please follow the instruction highlighted in red and allow MBAM to remove everything it has found.

Once that has been completed, plese follow-up with another Kaspersky scan

(Kaspersky should be run after MBAM)

Thank-you

CB
I am happy to run it all over again, but you should know that I did follow directions very closely and I did have it remove all selected and all of them were marked with green check marks.
you should also know that this computer has not been able to get any MS updates accept what MS forces. I do not know the reason for this however it will not get updates in any way I try.

there may be something in my computer that YOU may have not concidered that made the program respond properly, I do not know, however.

Always allow for the option of " YOu might not have done this OR something else could be wrong"
It is a PR thing.

I have just not got to the HJT and here it is for you. I again apologize for not getting you all things at once, but again you are very quick and alas I am not as quick as you, regretably.
