============= FINISH: 12:17:48.90 ===============
..just to let you know, I still have the problem, but it may be my imagination, it doesn't seem "quite" as bad as this morning… like I said, maybe imagination or wishfull thinking …..
Upon reboot, Windows Defender is showing (automatically) TrojanDownloader:Win32/Renos … should I click Remove All or just ignore it? That extra security "bubble" is now gone. I also did an ANti-Malware scan … here's the log … but the two registry entries have been found and removed OVER and OVER and OVER Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.34 Database version: 1802 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 2/25/2009 1:57:45 PM mbam-log-2009-02-25 (13-57-45).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 91949 Time elapsed: 18 minute(s), 32 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 2 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit (Trojan.Agent) -> Data: c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. …its also probably too early to ask this, but I runn all of this stuff simultaneously … Norton Anti-Virus Ad-Aware Malware Bytes Spybot Windows Defender I'm sure I'm causing some kind of conflict and clearly all of that stuff doesn;t prevent all problems from getting through … what do you think?
Hi,

Disable Windows Defender.

Open Windows Defender.

Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Next, run the regfix I posted last again (fix.reg). Now run MalwareBytes' again and let it fix the items. It is almost certainly Windows Defender that is preventing MBAM from fixing the items. Make sure Spybot is still disabled as well.

Then post a new DDS log after this is all done.

Thanks.
OK … I merged FIX.REG again, rebooted, disabled Windows Defender, ran MBAM again only to get the same two reg entries as last time (log below). As soon as I re-enabled WIndows defender, the warning window popped up again with RENOS warning … here are the logs

Am I doing the steps in the right order? Should I be rebooting inbetween merging and MBAM? I think while I'm waiting for a reply I'm going to do it all again, but with no rebooting between steps because I now notice in your instructions that you don;t mention rebooting.

One more thing, in your instructions for the fix.reg file you say "Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4, and a blank line at the end." .. please clarify the second part … does that mean that there IS or IS NOT a blank line at the end? I DO NOT have a blank line at the end.

..just to let you know that I tried it again without the rebooting in between … same results, same mbam log a few hours later, have used the machine for about 3 hours on various things, the Windows Defender problem (popup-warning RENOS) seems to have disappeared and the extra security warning bubble popping up from the system tray also seems to be gone. However I still get various windows opening regarding virus scans, virus software etc, not as bad as this morning though. I have to get some sleep…been at this for 12 hrs straight and have to work tomorrow (I teach COmputer Science … believe it or not) … I'll pick this up again in about 15-16 hrs when I get back from work … hopefully, you'll still be on the case … thanks alot for your help …I'm a decent program, but not very good at fixing these security issues as you can see. Once again, thanks ….
Hi,

OK, please post a fresh HijackThis log, and we'll see if we've made any progress.

(I teach COmputer Science … believe it or not)

That's cool - I'm studying it at the moment ;)

You're the second person that got the idea that my name was "John" - but I have no idea how you came to that conclusion.

Thanks,

-jp
..thanks … studying is good, at least that's what I tell my students …. just woke up … off to work …but just to let you know, that after a reboot, no more Windows Defender issues, no more extra security bubbles in the system tray, just the usual internet explorer issues with advertisements and also security warnings … just another clue …at least 1/2 of the time, the internet window never connects to an image, just a blank window … Thanks for all of your hard work … as far as thinking you were John …I thought I got that from your message back to me re a "real life" lol, but you didn;t refer to yourself by name .. and oops, as I'm writing this, WIndows Defender just popped up, but in a clean less obnoxious way, warning me about RENOS again .. oh well. –Phil
…just another clue …. by less "obnoxious, I mean the usual defender window, not the smaller, bright red banner warning window … just a note, when I quarantine (or remove RENOS), the machine behaves itself. Also, I just realized that the only other anti-something software that reacts to this infection is Norton, once in a while right as a rogue window opens, it tells me that it has intercepted an attack … Ad-aware and MBAM never react to anything. Of course, right now, spy-bot S&D is off as requested.
Ok, when you get a chance please post that HijackThis log. Does Windows Defender give you a file location when it pops up?

Please also do this:

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    :file
    c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

    :filefind
    *userinit.ex*
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt.

Thanks.
I hate to act stupid BUT …I've never done a HiHackThis log … where do I get the software from and how do I do it please … Also … where would I find the file location that Windows Defender has for the file??? I don;t think (although I'm not in front of my CPU right now) that it gives me a location, just a name) but I'll look. I'll be doing this tonight when I get home of course.
Sorry, usually HijackThis logs are the first thing we get in a topic here so I assumed you had it.

Please download HijackThis version 2.0.2 and save the file to your desktop. Double click the Hijackthis icon on your desktop and hit Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile and then copy and paste the log into a new reply, using the Add Reply button.

I didn't know whether Windows Defender would report the file location or not, never used it myself. No worries if it doesn't. Next time it pops up see if you can get more info about what it finds. Same with Norton.

Cheers.
..since you don;t use WIndows Defender, I wonder, (back to a previous question while I'm still at work …) what SHOULD I be using … remmeber, I run Norton anti-virus Ad-Aware SpyBot S&D Windows Defender Could these be conflicting???? I know we have to solve this original problem first, but it makes me wonder if some of this should be UNINSTALLED? Just a thought
There shouldn't be any real conflicts, however if you are experiencing slowness you could stop using one of your real-time AntiSpyware programs. Personally, I don't think Ad-Aware is as good as it used to be. SpyBot and Windows Defender should be sufficient for real-time protection as well as on-demand scans when you need them.
