Yesterday, I clicked a link and my computer went nuts. Norton said that a program was trying to access the Internet, so I blocked it on all ports, but it still went through. Immediately my desktop background changed, and pop-ups came up. Then a little bubble on my taskbar said "your computer is infected, download this antivirus blah blah blah…etc.". I opedned the Internet and everytime I searched something in Google, and clicked a link, it took me somewhere else, to an ad or pop-up. I quickly downloaded Avast! and began to set it up, but Avast! froze, then it said that it detected malware and it I deleted it. Norton also said it detected malware, so I deleted it. They both asked to restart the computer, so I did, only after, I couldn't open any applications. I couldn't open my documents, Internet Explorer, My Computer, etc. When I click Internet Explorer it would show up for a fraction of a second and quickly close. After I restarted, my desktop background also came back. Usually, I do System Restore to clean this sort of thing up, but this malware disabled System Restore and when it did open, the checkpoints were gone. Task Manager was also disabled by the "administrator". I called Microsoft and the guy couldn't help, as nothing he did worked. He bumped my case up to a Level 2 case.

I downloaded MalwareBytes from my laptop to a flash drive, and installed it on my screwed-up pc. For some reason it didn't work, it said something is out of date. I cannot connect to the internet to update it, since the malware cut off the connection. I found this forum and downloaded Runt, and installed it. I backed up my registry, but I'm guessing the registry that was saved would be infected since I did it after I got this malware. Then I downloaded HiJackThis and now I have a log. I ran HJT during Safe Mode.

I have some very important documents and e-mails that I absolutely CANNOT lose. Please help me clean this up and keep my documents and emails in one piece! They are very important as I cannot graduate without these files and emails! I use Outlook Express as my email program. The computer is an HP running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3.

Here is a copy of the log:

By the way, here's another quick problem also, my sister downloaded FrostWire, and I uninstalled it, but it still shows up on Start Up. I even went to Add/Remove programs and it's not there, yet it still shows up. I don't want to delete it from the Program Files in fear of it screwing up my OS and my PC being useless.

Thank you,

Welcome usa1980

I'm having a look at your log/s now. Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Thanks

I'd also like to see a list of installed programs so please do this:
Create an Uninstall List
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
  • Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file
  • When you press the Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file
  • Copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply
Multiple Anti-virus Programs
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti-virus programs running in memory at once:
Norton | Avast
Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. Please remove one of them NOW.

Combofix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
A guide to do this can be found here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

I cannot copy ComboFix from my flash drive to the desktop, the copy and paste/move feature has been disabled by the malware. I had to DL ComboFix from my laptop onto a flash drive since the PC has no connection.

I ran ComboFix straight from my flash drive, and it opened up a blue command prompt, and it said that it's reapring to run but it took a long time so I closed the program because it was getting late and I had to go bed.

I'l wait for your advice. Thanks.
OK. let's try this.
As you have plugged your flashdrive into the infected computer, we'll need to disinfect it before you plug it back into your laptop:

Flash_Disinfector
  • Download Flash_Disinfector here and save it to the desktop of your laptop.
  • Double click to run it
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flashdrivdrive. Plug it in
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • Click on File > New Task (Run…). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Delete the copy of Combofix you have & downlaod it again following the instructions below. Again you will need to download to your laptop & transfer it or run it from your flashdrive:

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You MUST rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

OK, I just ran ComboFIx from my flashdrive, I did not save it my desktop because I couldn't. Now my computer is in a useless state. When I log in, the desktop background only shows, and that's it. No taskbar, no Start button, nothing. Just emptiness. What should I do now? And it's too late for the flash drive infection, I've plugged it into my laptop numerous times, but I disinfected it with that program. Now what do I do?

Did Combo-Fix finish & did your computer reboot? Can you still get to Safe Mode?

Yes, it rebooted on its own, and I can get to safe mode, but the account isn't loading; it's just the background and that's it.
Maybe I have to wait longer for it to load, but I waited about 10 minutes and nothing loaded.

PS: I didn't have the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and I couldn't download because I have no Internet connection.
It is quite possible that you may have to wait up to 30 minutes for Explorer to start.

If you can bring up Task Manager with CTRL-ALT-DEL, try this to get Explorer to start:
1. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up Task Manager
2. From the Main Menu of Task Manager select File -> New Task
3. In the field labeled Open type "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) and click the OK button.

Let me know if it doesn't start & we'll try something else.

OK, here is my ComboFix Lof. It took 1.5 hours to load the PC!
I called Microsoft and told them the problem. My spyware is a seneka-.sys. In the place of (-) is a bunch of random letters.

OK… Good work. Before we go on could you let me know if Copy/Paste, Drag/Drop is still disabled. It will make it a lot easier if it's enabled otherwise we'll have to find an alternative method. And what about Internet connection?

OK… Good work.

Before we go on could you let me know if Copy/Paste, Drag/Drop is still disabled. It will make it a lot easier if it's enabled otherwise we'll have to find an alternative method. And what about Internet connection?

Copy/Paste works now, Internet doesn't. I check the Internet connection using the Command Prompt, typed in "ping yahoo.com" and got four replies.
The connection is a cable connection using Comcast. The connection is there, the malware just cut it off somehow.
OK, good. We'll get to ther Inernet connection shortly.

TeamViewer: Is this something you recently installed yourself?

There are some files that Combofix flagged that need to be verified. So please do this:
View Hidden Files & Folders Windows XP
To view Hidden Files & Folders do the following:
Click Start
Open My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Select the View Tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm
Click OK

  • Create a new folder on your desktop by right-clicking anywhere, scroll down to New then click Folder
  • Name it something like Upload
  • Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, right click on userinit.exe then click Copy
  • Go back to the Upload folder you created on your desktop, open it then right-click & select Paste
  • Transfer the Upload folder to the desktop of a computer with a working Internet connection via your Flash Drive
The following instructions will require an Internet connection, so you may need to copy the folder to a computer with a working Internet connection.
Upload Files for Scanning
Go to VirSCAN
  • Click Browse
  • In the File Upload box that opens navigate to the Upload folder, & double click on userinit.exe
  • Then click Upload
  • Wait for scans to finish then copy & paste the results into your next reply
You can delete the Upload folder & it's contents once we have the results of VirSCAN.
