umm… somehow I seem to have shut off my msconfig utility and need to find how to turn it back on. I have xp pro. In services maybe ? Can I be helped?
Hello again justime8 :D

What happens when you enter msconfig in the Run window?

On my computer with SP3, I have msconfig.exe in two locations:

C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

Both are 04/14/2008 04:42 AM 169,984 msconfig.exe

The one that gets executed is in C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries, so if you have the other but not this one you can copy it.

If you are getting an error message, please post it.
Good link thank you!
I have the file here C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries
it is also here C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
but….it's not here as the link suggests
"IF MSConfig.exe is already there and you still can’t launch MSCONFIG from Run command, then the reference to the path within the registry may be wrong. Check this location in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE" here is an image of my registry

is the utility associated with any service I may have shut off ?
Hi justime, Strange that it has a totally different path there in the registry. I just checked my registry and I have the same as what was shown in the link tallin gave: C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe In that screenshot you took not the whole path is visible. Please tell us what the complete path of the default value is. Also check with Windows Explorer if the path and file actually exist. Making the actual change in the registry to make it back to normal is not really hard, but we really need to know WHY it has changed so we know that we will not break anything. Please let us know. Regards, John.
using find and searching for msconfig with regedit , I have these key names in my registry  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Nls\MUILanguages\RCV2\msconfig.exe HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\MUILanguages\RCV2\msconfig.exe HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1844237615-515967899-725345543-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\*
Looks like you're missing this: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\PCHealth\\HelpCtr\\Binaries\\MSConfig.exe" Note the double back-slashes.

you said

Looks like you're missing this:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\PCHealth\\HelpCtr\\Binaries\\MSConfig.exe"

you also said this

Making the actual change in the registry to make it back to normal is not really hard, but we really need to know WHY it has changed so we know that we will not break anything.

so should I add this key to my registry ?
They were different people who said those two quotes ;) I am discussing whether we are going to add it with the rest of the tech team, so please do not do anything yet :)
Hi,

Let's edit the registry to make it like it should be at default.

Step 1: Back up the registry
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it.
  • Download ERUNT
  • Save it to your desktop. Run and install this program. All the default settings can be used. Only when it asks to add ERUNT to your start-up folder you should say No.
  • When the program runs, make sure both System registry and Current user registry are checked.
  • Then click OK and click Yes if it asks you to create a folder.
  • It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.
  • Click OK to close ERUNT.

Step 2: Run RegFix
Please do this:
  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • Save it on the desktop
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\PCHealth\\HelpCtr\\Binaries\\MSConfig.exe"
Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4.
Make sure there are IS one blank line at the end.
  • Now close the window. Also close any other windows which are opened!
  • Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes.

Step 3: Reboot
Reboot your computer to make sure the changes have taken effect.

Please let us know if that worked for you :)

Regards,
John.
THANK you so much!! so far all is good!!! :notworthy: :P thanks ok any cleen up or should I keep that reg back-up program?
