Hi Did you do the last request: Start your HJT and click on open the misc tools section. then click on generate startuplist log. then post that log here please. I will be waitiung for your answeres. mschroe919 you may try this too: You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You' may need your XP CD if they find some .dll's missing Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space. (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

Hi Meiko

I am interested in seeing your photo of pop ups.
You can't just attach photo like you would in email,
Here is what you have to do for me to see them.
First go to photobucket get it :

HERE:

it is a free image posting site.

Here is a tutorial on photobucket site:

HERE TUTORIAL

Now once this is done you can post the picture here by giving me the www. that they give you.

Hi

Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky online scan] This scan takes about 60 minutes to complete.

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK & have it scan My Computer
Once the scan is complete, it will provide a report if your system is infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

[external image: Posted Image]

Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop and post it in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

good luck mschroe919
Kaspersky scan results below - please note I have uninstalled Thunderbird (my e-mail client) since I run it from the laptop now so the viruses found are probably in files left behind I'm guessing.

Fresh HLJ log below as well.

Run the malware bytes program again
When done reboot and post the malware log and a new HJT log
good luck mschroe919
Deleted the files then ran Malwarebytes again, it appears clean but Avast picked up on a couple of trojans while it was running. I rebooted and still have the same message box appearing before it goes to the welcome message. Malwarebytes log and fresh HJTJ log below:

Let me know about the how the pc is doing

mschroe919
Hi

I asked another voulenteer to look at your case. It was pointed out to me the infection you had was a backdoor bot. It may or maynot be completly gone if you use your pc for banking and such please read the following:

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor bot It is a malicious application that runs in the background and allows remote access to your system, giving the attacker full control of your system. This could result in a ID theft.
There is a possibility that your personal security has been compromised. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been compromised.
Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps

This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response

mschroe919
Hi mschroe919 I was afraid of that. I think the best idea for me (and peace of mind) would be to reformat the hard drive. The day after the initial viral activity started up I went to the bank directly and changed all my passwords as well as other sites, and have not used my infected PC to do internet banking etc. The only thing I have done on the PC is some graphics work on Photoshop which I'm hoping I can still back-up before reformatting?
Hi Sorry about that but in your shoes I would format and factory install If I can do anything more I will leave this site open for a few days if you want to get a hold of me post it here. Good luck mschroe919
Thanks mschroe919 for all your help! I know we worked hard to try and crack this one and in the end had to reformat anyway but thanks for the time and effort you took to try and help me out, it was much appreciated :) Thanks again, Meiko
Hi Meiko

[external image: Posted Image]

Well at least you know your pc is safe.

I am including my all clean speech so if you follow them you will
have a safer PC
mschroe919

Now that your pc has been fomated and is clean
this is my canned all clean speech.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Note you may have some of theses programs allready, if so just a reminder to keep updated.

FIRST:
You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
===================================================================
NEXT:
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
====================================================================

Use an Anti Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See these links for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
If you don't have one here are some of the better AV products.

Symantec/Norton Antivirus: http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/
Kapersky AV: http://www.kaspersky.com/buyonline.html?info=25
Nod32 : http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm
Panda AV: http://www.pandasoftware.com/
McAfee Virusscan: http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=100
AVG Anti-Virus (Free version available) http://www.grisoft.com/

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
============================================================
NEXT:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
If you don't have one see link below for a free firewall:

ZoneAlarm:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata….jsp?lid=nav_za

Sunbelt Kerio:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm

OutPost:
http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php
================================================================================

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software

Get the download and tutorial for Spybot S&D here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html
=========================================================================

Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
========================================================================

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Happy surfing the net
