The computer windows start opening - context menus for right-click start opening - and it just goes on for 30 secs. Intermittently the mouse stops working, keyboard stops working - and all wierd things happen until you reboot.
I have done a reformat - but did not help. Still same thing happens. Please help. Log is below.

Hi AIM327,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

This isn't sounding much like a malware issue. However, let's see what we can find.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello Tomk,
Thanks for your detailed response with the instructions. Thanks also for taking out the time to look into this issue. I have completed both the steps in the order you mentioned. The Quick Scan of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware did not discover any issue - so I also ran the Full scan. I have included the logs from both the scans below - alongwith the new HijachThis log.
The behavior for the computer is that intermittently it starts some automated behavior - windows close, new windows appear, some right click context menus are seen and a new windows explorer opens to the Start Menu folder at "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu".

AIM327,

This just doesn't appear to be a malware issue. Could you possibly have a keyboard issue? Stuck keys?

Let's try an online scan.

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.
Hi Tomk, I have attached the ESET log below. I again had the issue happen twice today. I have actually verified that it is not a keyboard issue by using the laptop directly as well as with an external keyboard. And all times - it is almost the same behavior and it goes on for almost 30 secs for which the computer goes berserk. I am also perplexed by this - since none of the tools has identified any problem but I am positive there is some virus - because of the consistent behavior. One issue I feel is that there are around 10 instances of svchost.exe - and previously i did not see so many instances of it running. Can we find out what programs are they running for - perhaps that would lead to the issue. Just a thought. Again - thanks for your help - and appreciate it a lot. ESET LOG: # version=4 # OnlineScanner.ocx=1.0.0.635 # OnlineScannerDLLA.dll=1, 0, 0, 79 # OnlineScannerDLLW.dll=1, 0, 0, 78 # OnlineScannerUninstaller.exe=1, 0, 0, 49 # vers_standard_module=3869 (20090219) # vers_arch_module=1.064 (20080214) # vers_adv_heur_module=1.066 (20070917) # EOSSerial=1ea98b68c7f18448acd444fc2580ca23 # end=finished # remove_checked=false # unwanted_checked=true # utc_time=2009-02-20 07:21:39 # local_time=2009-02-19 11:21:39 (-0800, Pacific Standard Time) # country="United States" # osver=5.1.2600 NT Service Pack 3 # scanned=297845 # found=0 # scan_time=2806
AIM327,

It does appear you have a problem, it just doesn't seem to be malware related. Therefore, I'm going to suggest that you head over to the windows forum and see what the Tech Team can do for you. Please post a link there to this thread so that they will have access to your logs here.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Hi Tonk, Thanks for all your help. Also completed the steps mentioned above and will open a new ticket in the other forum. Thanks for the links 2. Been through one of them and it is nice reading. Thanks again for your help.
