To He Who Shall be Known as Saviour:

Yesterday I was doing some research on some real estate property and came across what I thought was a video link to the piece of property that I was interested in - instead the link downloaded a piece of malware to my computer that then kept trying to open a new IE page an log onto some security site (which I continously closed the IE that was linking to site) and in my try box a baloon kept coming up saying "WARNING! You have a Security Problem!"

FYI - DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK UNLESS PREPARED: The malware link I mentioned above kept going to this page and I offer this ONLY as information - in case you have the ability to 'nuke' them back:

Dangerous Link Removed: LDT

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, SmitfraudFix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.
Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Well, at this point I unlpugged the computer from the internet after Norton Antivrus popped up with:

Scan type: Auto-Protect Scan
Event: Threat Found!
Threat: Packed.Generic.187
File: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CrucialSoft Ltd\MS AntiSpyware 2009\msas2009.exe
Location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CrucialSoft Ltd\MS AntiSpyware 2009
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine failed : Delete succeeded : Access denied
Date found: Saturday, February 14, 2009 4:24:05 PM

Then I ran Spybot - Search & Destroy and it provided two Malware alerts including the one below (which I then told it to immunize).

Product: Smitfraud-C.gp
Threat: Malware

Description
Smitfraud-C.gp is a collection of Smitfraud-C. variants. These variants usually get installed by exploits, social engineering or bundled with other malware. They also download other malware and trojan horses. Symptoms include unknwon browser helper objects, fake security messages, fake security software, pop up advertising, browser redirects or hijacking.

However I still remained quite skeptical about the system being clean since it was running deathly slow, so I went online through another computer and dowloaded VIPRE Antivirus and Antispyware. Vipre then found 12 items of concern, including 1) Explore32.Hijacker in the Registry “HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-999240632-3908674087-377326679-1006\Software\XML-1”; 2) Trojan.FakeAlert in File c:\docume~1\mark\locals~1\temp\perce.jpg.exe and in HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-999240632-3908674087-377326679-1006\Software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\Cognac 1; and 3) MSAntispyware 2009 in HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-999240632-3908674087-377326679-1006\Software\CrucialSoft Ltd…and assorted subfolders including \CrucialSoft LTD\MS Antispyware 2009 lid 1, etc. At which point I then deleted the CrucialSoft folder listed above, Emptied the Trash and then I tried using Spybot Shredder to eliminate the file C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Local Settings\Temp\perce since it pointed to this file as a problem file (it appears to be a 95k '.jpeg' file) but the file would not 'shred' and I could not get rid of it….So I ran HijackThis to get a log to post which brings this series of events to the current time.

Now when I restart the computer, Windows XP keeps trying to 'clean the system' at startup but I have to end up bypassing this system check, otherwise it just gets hung up in a loop. The system is now moving very slowly and it seems a bit unstable (and I am a bit panicked that I can't find the CD to boot My Book Mirror Edition back-up drive so I can back up my files (yes, I must confess that most of my files NOT back-up at this point and so I am also trying to download the software for My Book while I write this.)

Below is my HijackThis log from this evening and must say that I have encountered some pretty pesky malware before but none that have spooked me like this…any help you can provide would be most excellent as I REALLY can not afford to the possibility of turning on my computer tomorrow or the next day and getting the dreaded Blue Screen…thanks in advance!:

Any help you could provide would be a truly great thing as I am on pins and needles trying to figure out if this thing still has a hold on my computer. Let me know if you need the startup log as well and I can provide that should you need it -

Thanks,
XERO
Hi Xero,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual user account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
TomK - I apologize for the delay, I just returned from my travels for work…

Anyway, after having a number of people all providing me with their two cents on what I should do, I thought I would try them all to see if any of these could get rid of the VooDoo…so in order of the sequence I ran:

1) Ran SDFix (see log below)
- Then received the Symatec AntiVirus note (see below)
2) Ran ATF Cleaner (no log)
3) Ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (see log below)
4) Ran SmitfraudFix (see log below)
5) The Comedian (no log)
6) Dr. Web CureIt - twice (see log below)

It appears from the second run of Dr. Web CureIt that there appears to be some items still left on the laptop…your thoughts?

Symatec Antivirus (after SDFix)

Thanks,

Xero,

…your thoughts?

Here is what I think:
  • It is your computer and what you do with it is your decision.
  • You came here and asked for my help
  • I asked you to run specific tools
  • You talked to some friends who gave you different advice
  • You partially followed my instructions
  • You ran tools and scans I didn't ask for
  • You didn't complete the tasks I requested.
This honestly isn't an ego thing. If you do not want my help, more power to you. Only you should decide what you do with your computer. I just advise.

If you do want my help, then you need to follow my instructions (and only MY instructions). You can't be running other scans. I do not want to help you bork your system. If I ask you to do something, but you only partially do it and then do something else with some other program, you can trash your system. As I said, it's your system so you completely have my permission. However, I don't want to participate in that case.

Let me know. If you want to continue, please post a new HijackThis log and we will see where we're at and begin again.
TomK,

My apologies, no disrespect meant by incorporating the other approaches - I will follow your directions implicitly going forward. The one question I did have is in reference to your point #7 regarding not completing the tasks you requested - was there something that I missed in my execution of your instructions regarding the 1) SDFix, 2) ATF Cleaner, 3) MBAM? If so, again I apologize…I attempted to follow your steps line by line but I will pay more attention going forward.

Below is my new HiJack This log for your reference:

Thanks,

Xero,

Perhaps my tone was to harsh. I don't feel disrespected. I just wanted you to understand the gravity of following multiple sets of instructions while utilizing the tools we use. It can be very drastic very quick. It happens. Sometimes OP's do something relatively simple like selecting option #3 instead of #2. Sometime it doesn't matter, sometimes it definitely does.

The only thing you didn't do was describe what was happening.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12…allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. [external image: Posted Image]
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings… button
  • click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave all 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Settings
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
It is STRONGLY recommended that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Please describe how your computer is operating now and then give me a new HijackThis log.
TomK-

No worries - you have to keep us 'newbies' in-line and I respect that so I will continue to proceed under only your guidance.

I did the following per your suggestion:
1) Downloaded Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
2) Removed all older versions of Java using the Control Panel.
3) Installed Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
4) Cleaned the Java cache (applets/applications/other files).
5) Removed all Viewpoint Manager files using the Control Panel (I do not use AOL and I really dislike the fact that it is automatically loaded on computers - but you probably hear that a lot).
6) Ran a HiJack This scan and 'Fixed' the seven (7) items you identified.

My computer is not really acting up anymore but I continue to remain paranoid that my system might be compromised in terms of using passwords for email/banking/etc. accounts - do you believe that I am 'safe' to access these secure environments?

I am sure you have better things to do on a Sunday so I really appreciate your help with all of this and let me know if there is anything else you think might be beneficial to minimizing any security threats (should I re-engage my Symatec again?)

Xero
TomK, One thing that has been different on my computer is that my clock in the lower right-hand corner is showing 'military time'. I have right clicked on the clock and clicked "Adjust Time/Date" and it shows the time as 12:00 hour but when I say OK, it still shows as military time…thoughts? Xero
Xero,

I believe I can help you fix the clock issue. What you have described sounds like an after effect of running ComboFix. Did you? I need to know because it can effect the solution.

Yes, get your Symantec going.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply please provide:
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed

At this point I have seen nothing related to backdoors or keyloggers. If I had found something like that, I would have warned you and told you that if you intended to do any online banking on the computer ever again, that you should reformat. However, I see no reason for you to be overly concerned about online banking. If Kaspersky reveals something, I will warn you appropriately.
TomK,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you - the Kaspersky scan took two hours to complete. I have posted the log below for your review. Regarding the clock issue, I have not dowloaded, nor did I run ComboFix - maybe it happened when I ran "The Comedian" or "Dr. Web CureIt"…'this is why you should always listen to your instructor', right? Any thoughts on what might have caused this?

Xero,

No worries.

Everything found you AV already took care of. Still nothing found that would cause me to recommend that you reformat.

I don't know what "The Comedian" is and "Dr. Web CureIt" doesn't reset your clock. Therefore all I really know is I don't know what changed you clock, However, I believe we can fix it.

If you want your clock in 12 hr vs. 24 hour format:

  • Click on Start
  • Click on Control Panel
  • Click on Regional and language options
  • Click on customize
  • Click on Time tab
  • Click on arrow to the right of time format
  • Select h:mm:ss tt
  • OK your way out

Let me know how it goes and also how your computer is running now. If things are good, we'll do a little closeout and you can go.
