Hello. I hope this is not a trivial posting. I do my best to keep the junk off my system, but I think something made its way in anyhow.

Edit: New symptoms: The plot thickens. Whole system has become extremely sluggish. Firefox taking multiple attempts to open. Spyware Blaster seems compromised as well. It won't open or update.

Quick history of the problem: I was surfing some gaming sites. My AVG alert screen came up and said I had accessed a trojan, but it did not show up on any scans. I decided to get rid of AVG and loaded up Kaspersky (updated, of course). I ran a full scan with Kaspersky and Spybot S&D. Neither showed anything. The original alert closed out before I could write down what the trojan was. Couldn't find it in AVG anywhere. *Possibly informative—the windows security center wouldn't detect Kaspersky as the active Anti-Virus so I just disabled the warning by clicking 'I will monitor the AV myself'.*

I shutdown at that point. The next morning I start up which took longer than usual and got a warning that Explorer was being shutdown by a microsoft security program due to unauthorized data execution. I sent the error message. All my desktop icons disappeared briefly, then came right back.

I'm wondering if I have some kind of 'monitoring' going on. I know I'm definitely not accessing any banking sites until I know this is not a spyware problem.

I have performed the 'Before you post' tasks. Below are my HJT and Malware reports.

Hi eronix and welcome to What the Tech :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Extra note: Please be aware as I am still in training all of my fixes/posts require prior checking by a Expert. So some delays may be inevitable, please be patient and I will reply again asap.

Next:

In the interim I would like to view a list of currently installed software applications on you're PC. How to provide as follows:

Start/Run HiJackThis and click on Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.
Hi, Dakeyrus

EDIT: After reviewing the log you requested I've found it's not entirely accurate. The Spybot installed right now is the 1.6 version, Quicktime was removed a couple weeks ago, as was the Wow trial version. Don't know why there are double entries for Kaspersky and a couple others.

Thanks for taking time to review my situation. I'm happy to be one of your subjects while you are in training. Hopefully, my situation is simple. We shall see.

The only thing I have done since my original post is mess with the Kaspersky Anti-virus trial version which I can't say I'm real happy with. It seems very over-protective and the full system scan is EXTREMELY slow.

Following is the information you requested from HJT.

Hi :)

I have identified some issues with your machine. So if you could you please not change any settings with absolutely anything and or uninstall/install any software applications. This will make it easier for myself to diagnose what is happening exactly and if indeed you are infected with malware.

Next:

Please download Rooter.exe to your desktop.
  • Then double-click it to start the tool.
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt.
  • Post the contents of Rooter.txt in your next reply.
Next:

Now I would like to perform a more in-depth research of your system as follows:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.
When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • Rooter.txt
  • Both RSIT Logs.
Hiya. Performed all tasks as requested.

Problems encountered:

–Spybot S&D; was removing registry files or entries for some reason, but only told me it was doing so when I tried to shut it down. When I saw it doing that, I shut it down at the process tab immediately until I could research that activity.
–No problems with the analyzing software.
–Kaspersky seems to not like Spyware Blaster. Always alerts when Sp. Blaster is opened for updating. Kaspersky also seems to run all the time no matter what. Can't shut the scanning off. Won't be keeping it, though. Just posted for information purposes.
–Firefox still taking a long time to open. Sites taking longer to appear. Sometimes have to stop and retype or reclick the destination site to get it to appear. Typing any text can lag significantly behind keyboard strokes.

Changes noticed:

–Explorer is no longer triggering an error message about shutting down upon startup due to unauthorized data execution, but my desktop still loads up, then 'blinks off' and comes back.

Concerns:

–Upon review of the most recent logs you asked for, I notice several program entries for things I thought I had uninstalled prior to any of this. Most notables are Quicktime, AdAware, and AVG.

Below are the logs in the order requested.

—————–EOF—————–
Hi :)

OK here is the situation so far, before I proceed any further I will do my best to get your system as stable as possible first.

Spybot S&D was removing registry files or entries for some reason, but only told me it was doing so when I tried to shut it down. When I saw it doing that, I shut it down at the process tab immediately until I could research that activity.
–No problems with the analyzing software.

OK we will address this now:

We need to disable the registry guard feature of Spybot S&D as follows as it will interfere with the system stability attempt/malware removal process.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer:

This is a two step process:-

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the older version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
  • If you have the new version 1.6, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
Second step, For Either Version:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident (shows a red/white shield).
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Next:

Kaspersky seems to not like Spyware Blaster. Always alerts when Sp. Blaster is opened for updating. Kaspersky also seems to run all the time no matter what. Can't shut the scanning off. Won't be keeping it, though. Just posted for information purposes.

What you are experiencing re SpywareBlaster and Kaspersky Anti-Virus is what as known as a false positive. I will inform the latter myself about this.

OK it is entirely possible some of my other system stability related findings may be playing a factor here so keep Kaspersky installed for now and if still the same issues I will post some download links for reliable freeware Anti-Virus applications and explain how to install without leaving your system unprotected.

Next:

The actual main system drive in your computer is very close to the bare minimum recommend free space capacity of 15%. Though in my humble opinion a minimum of 25% is far better:

System drive C: has 3 GB (18%) free of 16 GB

What happens to a Hard-Drive is when it reaches this level of free space, system instability can occur and it makes it quite difficult for any system maintenance to be performed both correctly and safely.

So I now propose you uninstall any software applications you do not require. I also have a list of some I do recommend be unistalled also:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Java™ 6 Update 7 <— Older installations left in-place pose a security risk and a possible back-door for malware.
Registry Mechanic <— Not a desirable application at all. Please read this forum topic pertaining.
Windows Defender Signatures <— No need as this application is no longer installed.

Clean Temp Files:

Launch your installed CCLeaner application:

  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
If you opted to uinstall this application carry out the below instead:

Click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK.

  • Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are checked.
  • You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Click on OK then Yes.
  • Now Reboot(restart) your computer.
Check Hard Disk For Errors:

Press Start->Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Next:

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete this folder (if present):

C:\rsit

Then empty your Recycle Bin.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.
When completed the above, please post back the following:
  • Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • checkhd.txt.
  • Both RSIT Logs.
Hey again

I actually did most of this with a few hours of your reply, but I'm just now getting to the response.

This may be overkill, but I'm going to list everything I did in order in addition to just copy/pasting the logs.

#1) Disabled Tea-timer as instructed. HOWEVER, see #2.

#2) Uninstalled Java 6 update 7, Registry Mechanic, Quicktime, AppleSoftware Update, WoW free trial, and an older version of SpybotS&D; 1.5.

Two problems: — Couldn't find any Window Defender signatures to uninstall.
— Uninstalled the active Spybot S&D; by mistake.

#3) Installed a fresh Spybot S&D; 1.6 version without Tea Timer.

#4) Ran CCleaner using the changes you specified.

#5) Freed up space on drive C by transferring about 500MB of non-system stuff to another partition.

#6) Ran chkdisk and RSIT. Logs are included below.

Problems encountered:

-Talked to my son-in-law. He as informed me he used my computer to pull up some porn sites. GRRRR. No doubt this is part of my problem. Last time he'll be using my computer.

-Couldn't find any Windows Defender signature files or entries to get rid of.

-Spybot S&D; was reinstalled as described above.

-Explorer no longer seems to 'blink' at startup.

-Typing text in Firefox and att.net emails lags quite noticeably at varying times. (I think this has something to do with the fact I can't shut down Kaspersky's scanning.)

-Kaspersky is not making itself my favorite AV program since installation. Seems to have many conflicts and no apparent way to shut down its scanning.

-RSIT is not creating an info.txt that I can find. I have run it 3 times now. It only creates a log.txt.

RSIT is not creating an info.txt file for some reason, at least not one I can find. I am going to reboot and run it again. Will edit post if it shows up.

EDIT: I found an old info.txt file and deleted it. Ran RSIT again. It created the info file this time. Below are the results of BOTH info.txt and log.txt(again). Sorry.

Info.txt shows Kaspersky as disabled. It is actively scanning right now. <_<
Hi :)

I actually did most of this with a few hours of your reply, but I'm just now getting to the response.

This may be overkill, but I'm going to list everything I did in order in addition to just copy/pasting the logs.

Absolutely fine, I appreciate detailed information :

-Talked to my son-in-law. He as informed me he used my computer to pull up some porn sites. GRRRR. No doubt this is part of my problem. Last time he'll be using my computer.

Wise move, those unsavory sites are a hotbed for malware infections in my humble opinion.

Couldn't find any Windows Defender signature files or entries to get rid of.

That is fine they do not pose a problem and sometimes they may show up in a scan but not in Add/Remove, the joys of Microsoft Windows ;) There is a specific tool from Microsoft that can deal with this, we will address this later OK.

Kaspersky is not making itself my favorite AV program since installation. Seems to have many conflicts and no apparent way to shut down its scanning.

Info.txt shows Kaspersky as disabled. It is actively scanning right now.

Ok we will address this, either during the installation the application became corrupted some how or it just does not function well with your system as any two computers will have vastly different characteristics even if the same make/modal for example. Also I do not think a attempted repair of the installation will work in this situation.

Next:

Please follow the below instructions explicitly as this is the safest way to change your current Anti-Virus installation without your computer being on-line and unprotected:-

Please download just one only of the two free anti-virus applications installer listed below:
Next:

Now I will be asking you to boot into Safe Mode for the next part of the fix. It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as you will not have Internet access whilst in the aforementioned safe mode.

How to boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode, do so.

If any problems refer to this tutorial.

In safe mode carry out the following:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Now please make sure you Internet Connection is deactivated and Reboot your computer back into Normal mode.

Next:

Now with which ever new Anti-Virus application installer you opted to download:

Install >> Activate your Internet connection >> Check for any new updates >> Carry Out a Complete Scan. Have it fix anything it finds.

Next:

Please re-open HiJackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] 1

Now click on Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK.
  • Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are checked.
  • You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Click on OK then Yes.
  • Now Reboot(restart) your computer.
Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)
  • Double click once on RSIT.exe
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.
When completed the above, please post back the following:
  • Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • How is your computer performing now?
  • A new RSIT Log.
Greetings! Here we go.

Steps taken after reading your last post.

#1) Did some quick research and chose Avast and downloaded it. Aside from more positive user reviews, how often do you get to say AVAST ME HEARTIES!

#2) I rebooted into Safe Mode and attempted to remove Kaspersky from Add/Remove Programs. I received a system window announcing it could not be done. It stated Windows Installer can fail in Safe Mode OR that the Installer was not configured right.

#3) This may have been the wrong move, but I rebooted, pulled my internet plug, and tried to remove Kaspersky from Add/Remove Programs. The list would not populate.

#4) I plugged my internet back in, opened Add/Remove Programs and removed Kaspersky. I pulled the internet plug the second it was complete. Hopefully, this was not a huge mistake. I understand if you do not wish to continue after this.

#5) Rebooted computer and installed Avast while internet was still disabled.

#6) Rebooted again at Avast request and chose to let Avast perform a boot scan. Nothing detected, so I updated Avast, rebooted once again and ran a full scan. Nothing detected, but several files were unable to be scanned. All resided in a K-lite Codec pack I had downloaded to be able to watch videos that gamers make of their fights and other stuff they like to record in game.

#7) Ran HijackThis. Fixed the line indicated by you for the Yahoo Pager. No idea why that was there

#8) Ran cleanmgr and rebooted.

#9) Ran RSIT, then tested Firefox and a few sites for typing lag, and opened an online game (world of warcraft) to see if it had the high latency I was experiencing with Kasperky loaded.

Comments on problems and system performance:

I was concerned about not following your instructions while removing Kaspersky, but the action was a conscious decision.

When opening the online game World of Warcraft, Sygate (firewall) alerted me it had changed since last time it opened, though I know I had opened it previously this same day. I disallowed access. I'm not concerned about it for our purposes here. I just posted this as information. Online games tend to be a daily risk, so……

My system seems to be performing more like it did before posting here at WhatTheTech. Firefox snaps open immediately. I have not noticed the typing lag as of this post.

I know we are not done quite yet, but is there a surefire way to eliminate some of the scanning and 'fix-it' software from this session and a previous session at this site from a couple years ago? Programs involved: Look2Me Destoyer, Blacklight Rootkit Eliminator, Rooter, and RSIT? I'm fine with leaving any or all of them as long as they don't present a future risk due to being old executables.

And here you probably thought this looked like an easy one to take on. =) Hope it hasn't been too much of a headache.

I'd like to say I truly appreciate your help on this. I have made donations to this site in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

Below is the RSIT file requested.

—————–EOF—————–
Hi :)

You have done fine, the actual Kaspersky installation was just corrupted as I mentioned previously.

What you described to myself about the actions took, no worries

Fixed the line indicated by you for the Yahoo Pager. No idea why that was there

A Yahoo installation had been present at some and though the file relating was missing. All I had you do was remove the registry entry that was set to automatically start a Yahoo application when Windows starts, not a cause for concern however.

All of the mentioned scanning applications can be safely deleted manually and any logs once I give the all clear and then just empty your Recycle Bin. I can however provide a specific removal tool that targets any other Anti-Malware tools used in the past also but I see no indication of these in the current logs provided but no harm in running it. Let me know in your next post if you wish to do so.

Overall I am very pleased your system is more stable and running a lot better and you are very welcome!

Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click msicuu2.exe to install the utility.
  • Next, click Start >> All Programs >> Windows Install Clean UP
  • Once the program is open select:

    Windows Defender Signatures (If present)
    Yahoo! Install Manager (If present)

Any other entry relating to software applications no longer installed.

  • Now click Remove, then click OK
  • Reboot your computer.
Final Malware Check:

As a a precaution I would like you to run a online scan with the below so I can have a second opinion so to speak that your system is indeed malware free.

Please go here to run an online scanner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

  • Inform myself how your computer is running and or any problems encountered ?
  • Eset Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.
Back to it! Ran the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. No problems. ESET, however, was a problem for Internet Explorer. Even after bypassing the Active X protection, I kept getting a message stating that Windows wouldn't allow Eset scanner program to run because it could not verify the publisher. I tried to bypass that restriction in the Tools area of IE, but had no luck getting it to accept the scan. Did not run RSIT again due to the above. By the way, there is no need for the removal program you mentioned. I'm ok with just removing the oldest ones manually. I think I will keep Malwarebytes, anyhow.
Hi :)

Back to it!

Ran the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. No problems.

Good

ESET, however, was a problem for Internet Explorer. Even after bypassing the Active X protection, I kept getting a message stating that Windows wouldn't allow Eset scanner program to run because it could not verify the publisher. I tried to bypass that restriction in the Tools area of IE, but had no luck getting it to accept the scan.

OK try a Internet Explorer 7 reset as follows please:
  • Start Internet Explorer 7.
  • Click the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.
  • On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
  • In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
Then try to run the Eset online scan again please.

If still no joy please try this alternative Java based scanner:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
This online tuturial will help explain how to use the aforementioned online scan.

Any problems inform myself in your next post please and also provide:

When completed the above, please post back the following:
  • Inform myself how your computer is running and or any problems encountered ?
  • Online Scan results.
  • A new RSIT Log.
Hiya. Here is the latest.

Edit: Please see bottom for question after original posting. Thanks

#1) Even after hitting reset, Internet Explorer and Windows still won't let ESET run due to not being able to verify the publisher. (Odd that they insist on Internet Explorer, but that's the very thing that won't let it run. Yet another reason I hate IE. GO MICROSOFT!)

#2) Back to my old friend Kaspersky. Loaded up and ran ok via Java. Found nothing, so no report to view. I'm glad it decided to play nice this time.

#3) Ran RSIT. Log.txt below

As far as how the system seems to be running:

When I open a drive directly the whole screen blinks, but I'm guessing that is just the system choking on the raw amount of data it has to open up right away. I do think I have quite a bit of cleaning up to do after watching everything the scanners have to plow through. That's certainly my own issue, of course.

I am not noticing anything irregular, overall. Hopefully, my potential trojan problem was just that….potential, not real.

Below is the RSIT log.txt.

I have a question about the latest RSIT info.txt file above. It has a couple entries under Hosts File that I'd like to know if I need to be concerned about. I have included the entire info.txt file and made the Hosts File area bold. Sorry and thanks.
Hi :)

Even after hitting reset, Internet Explorerand Windows still won't let ESET run due to not being able to verify the publisher. (Odd that they insist on Internet Explorer, but that's the very thing that won't let it run. Yet another reason I hate IE. GO MICROSOFT!)

You could try a repair of the Internet Explorer installation:

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows XP

If still no success, my advised course of action would be to create a topic here:

Browsers, Internet and email

And wait for assistance from one of the outstanding Tech Support guys we have here in What the Tech. By all means include a link to this topic and mention I advised you to seek assistance etc:

Topic URL:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Explorer_keeps_shutting_down_then_comes_right_back_t100046.html

Back to my old friend Kaspersky. Loaded up and ran ok via Java. Found nothing, so no report to view. I'm glad it decided to play nice this time.

I would have preferred to actually see a report even if nothing was actually found, but no harm done and I surmise if anything was flagged you would have posted a log for myself to check.

When I open a drive directly the whole screen blinks, but I'm guessing that is just the system choking on the raw amount of data it has to open up right away. I do think I have quite a bit of cleaning up to do after watching everything the scanners have to plow through. That's certainly my own issue, of course.

Yes some system maintenance would be a distinct advantage for the health of your system. The below article is a excellent resource regarding the aforementioned matter:

Help! My computer is slow!

Also so is this:

What to do if your Computer is running slowly

I have a question about the latest RSIT info.txt file above. It has a couple entries under Hosts File that I'd like to know if I need to be concerned about. I have included the entire info.txt file and made the Hosts File area bold. Sorry and thanks.

This relates to the installed Spybot - Search & Destroy IE Immunization feature and is indeed a pseudo host file and perfectly safe.

Congratulations your computer appears to be malware free!

I just have a few tasks for your good self and some advice etc.

Next:

Time for some housecleaning:

Please delete the following:

  • RSIT.exe
  • C:\RSIT
  • Empty the Recycle Bin
Also delete any other tools and or logs.

Reset the system restore points:

  • Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close
Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start >> Run… and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
  • Press OK and Yes to confirm
Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed Anti-Virus application, Avast! Antivirus automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advice and run a through scan once a week.

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:
Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:
  • Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  • Never open emails from unknown senders.
  • Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  • Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.
Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Backup regularly:

You never know when your PC will become unstable or become so infected that you can't recover it. Follow this Microsoft article to learn how to backup. Follow this article by Microsoft to restore your backups.

Alternatively, you can use 3rd-party programs to back up your data. One example can be found at Bleeping Computer.

Make your Internet Explorer safer:

For Internet Explorer 7

Please read this article to configure Internet Explorer 7 properly.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of stuffs, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

Sygate Firewall Advice:

In-case not aware this once fine application is no longer supported by updates since the company was bought out by Symantec at the end of 2005 and the technology in-cooperated into their own applications.

So basically with out any updates ever again being released this application is deemed a security risk now.

I highly advise you uninstall Sygate and download ONE of the following firewalls and install it. Restart the computer for changes to take effect.

Dakeyrus, thank you for taking the last several days to review my system and help me. As I stated in a previous post, I do truly appreciate the time and knowledge available here on What The Tech.

The Kaspersky scan did not create a report to even copy over to the forum. When I clicked View Scan Report it came up as a blank window. <—-just posted for information. May be useful in the future.

I have reset Restore and am deciding on a new firewall. Sunbelt Kerio sounds good, but I'm not sure I like that company's affiliations which I won't post here. Much to my embarrassment I was not aware Sygate was sold. My research was obviously lacking there. I just saw it on Download.com and installed it after Zone Alarm went completely crazy on me several months ago.

I do plan to keep Malwarebyte on my system. I will look into all the other links you provided, too. I hope this was a good exercise for you as a new malware remover for WhatTheTech. Sorry I couldn't provide a system chock-full of lurking predators. ^_^ I'm kinda glad about that, though.

Good luck to you in your future endeavors and thank you, again, for helping keep mine bug-free.
