Hello everyone,

I have had great help within this incredible community people!! I don't however, have the extensive knowledge to help my grandma clean up her registry. She is having issues dealing with opening her internet browsers. They are VERY sluggggish opening. She was using a Cox, IE, and AOL internet browsers. The only one she could get to work was the AOL one. At best, it still took a good 10 minutes to open….. However, once open she was able to surf the web with no problem…….

If someone could Pllllllleeeeeese help us!! I will be walking through each step with her. I think it will be much easier that way for her and whomever choses to help….

Thanks so much! :wavey:

Welcome back bbernadettee, :wavey:

Be sure to unclude the header section with future HijackThis logs.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hey Tomk….. I accomplished the first part of that task with no problem. However, the second part went hay wire!!! :wall: I had problems installing malware bytes. It was saying that parts of the file were corrupt. I had uninstalled, reinstalled 2x. The same each time. However, I was finally able to do a system scan. I saved that log. But, when I checked each issue to be corrected I had problems again. It got stuck, froze and became non-responsive when it tried to quarantine "fun web products." I noticed there was a lot of processes running (68). And literally 40 had AOL in the process name. I tried to shut some down and the computer began to run a little better…. But it's TERRIBLY sluggish! What next?? Thanks  Here's the Malware Bytes log I was able to get Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.34 Database version: 1749 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 2/14/2009 1:45:52 PM mbam-log-2009-02-14 (13-45-49).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 66203 Time elapsed: 15 minute(s), 54 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 9 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 1 Files Infected: 1 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\popcaploader.popcaploaderctrl2 (Adware.PopCap) -> No action taken. bbernadettee,

Let's try a little more power.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

If it gives you any trouble, just come back here, post a HijackThis log and let me know.
Hey TomK, Sorry it has taken me soooo long to get back. It has been very hard to accomplish the tasks you have previously posted. The computer is sooooo slow and I couldn't shut off her AOL security center. In fact, I couldn't even get to it. When I selected AOL security center in her programs list nothing would happen. So, when I attempted to run combofix a window popped up notifying me that it was unsafe to run it while AOL was still securing the computer!! AHHHH!! Do, you think we should just possibly reinstall windows? She has the drivers disk as well as the OS disk.. Just performing these simple tasks is sooooo hard and pretty much impossible to accomplish… Thanks TomK!
bbernadettee,

Reformat and reinstall is an option.

We could try a powerless tool, but a more indepth scan. Once I get the logs, we could try to kill a few things with another tool.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
Hey TomK…. :)

Here's the DDS log and the newest HJT…. And attached is the other .txt document.. Hopefully there's still hope!

Hey TomK

Wow things are sooo much better. My Gma is very happy! Your the best.. :)

We ran into a little problem with the scanner that you wanted me to do.. This is what it said..

Your browser is not supported.

ESET Online Scanner is based on ActiveX technology and requires Microsoft Internet Explorer with enabled ActiveX controls. User has to agree to install ActiveX package signed by ESET.

What next?
bbernadettee,

Were you running Internet Explorer when you got this message?

If ESET is giving you trouble, you can use Kaspersky but it may require you to install Java.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
