Im not so much of a PC whiz. I'm not really sure how i got it. My officemate brought this to my attention when he opened my Internet Explorer. A "Brough to you by TQ!" message appears on the browser after the site name. According to him it is a malware although I dont really notice what it does. The problem gets worse, i dont have a subscription of an updated anti virus, anti spyware, anti-malware, etc… I also obsered that my laptop also gives a message the my Drive C memmory is running low. Im not sure if there are other viruses that infected it or a complication of the "brought to you by TQ!" malware. Please advise me on how to get rid of these messages. Thanks a biggie
Hi MasterOfDisaster,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download HijackThis from Here .
  • If using Internet Explorer, Please select RUN
  • If Using Firefox, Download to your Desktop and then Double-Click on Icon to start installation.
  • Choose the default location of C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Click the Install button.
  • Accept the license agreement .
  • The progam will place a shortcut on your desktop. This will make it easier for you to access the tool when required.
  • Click Do a system scan and save a log file. A Notepad file will open.
  • To post the text, first you must highlight the entire text and then press the (Ctrl+C) keys which copies it to your clipboard.
  • Now paste the log into this thread using the (Ctrl + V) buttons.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER
Hi Tomk, Thank you for your reply. I want to clarify if the HijackThis program deletes files from my computer when i run it. Thanks again. MastrofDisaster
MasterOfDisaster, HijackThis makes no changes to your system if operated as prescribed. Depending on what we find, we may use it to "fix" things later.
Hi tomk, Good Day! I am currently using a different computer now (out of the office). I will update you when I've done your recommendations on my laptop. THanks again. I'll keep you posted. MasterOfDisaster

MasterOfDisaster,

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Dear Tomk, I did you recomendations and the "Brought to you bt TQ!"didnt apear on my Iexplorer anymore. I think its imporant for you to know that I was not able to save/copy the log file. :o After the log file poped out, my taskbar (? start button etc.) disappeared. I didnt know what to do! Thinking that the C:\ was still there, i minimized the log file. BUt it was just my desktop image. I didnt know how to restore the logfile window. I clicked CTRL+ALT+DEL and to my surprise, the Task Manager appeared so i was able to restart my computer. Ones the computer was on, i checked the "whatthetech"site and the Malware message didnt appear anymore. DId i do anything wrong?? Please advise… Thanks much. MasterOfDisaster
MasterOfDisaster,

Not sure what caused it but it sounds like something hung on the reboot.

Please:
  • Right click on START on the left end of your Windows toolbar (lower left corner of your screen)
  • Click on Explore
  • Click on Local Disk (C:) in the left-hand window pane
  • Look for ComboFix.txt in the right-hand window pane and right click on it
  • Put your cursor (arrow) on Open With
  • Move your cursor to the new menu that opens and click on Choose Program…
  • Click on Notepad

When file opens, Copy/Paste text here

Also, over the weekend, i installed eTrust Antivirus. While scanning, it suddenly hanged. Im not sure the cause.

Did i do anything wrong again?

MasterOfDisaster
MasterOfDisaster,

It is important that you have only one Anti-virus on your computer. Based on this log, there are traces of AVAST, Computer Associates, and Norton. I'm sure the Norton files are orphaned but let's get rid of them anyway:

Use the link below to see how to run the Norton Removal Tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

If you have now installed eTrust Antivirus, be sure that you have uninstalled the others.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    AtJob::

    File::
    c:\documents and settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\smss.exe
    c:\documents and settings\Mommy\Templates\WowTumpeh.com
    c:\windows\Tasks\Symantec NetDetect.job

    DDS::
    mSearch Bar = hxxp://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr6/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html
    uSearchURL,(Default) = hxxp://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/su/ymsgr6/*http://www.yahoo.com

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Tok-Cirrhatus]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\F]
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply please provide:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed
Hi tomk! Good day! I also have SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster installed. Do i have to uninstall them too?? MasterOfDisaster
MasterOfDisaster, No. Neither of those is an Anti-Virus. We want you to have only one Anti-Virus, one firewall, and only one anti-spyware running real time protection.
