hi. my sisters laptop has been operating stupidly slowly over the past few weeks. she asked me to look at it after it starteed to take about 10 minutes to startup lol. the problems strarted all of a sudden and she can't remember if she installed anything that kicked it off kinda thing.

Also she had Mcafee installed free with the laptop which ran out and has no other protection other that that only auto updates and windows firewall. She does not do any defraging or delete internet files or carry out any maintenance of any kind. she also installed somthing called spyware doctor which more than likely brought more malware etc.. onto the laptop which magically started to throw up afew infections which were probably false. i started by uninstalling all the programs she didn't want along with mcafee and spyware doctor and also deleted all temp files and internet history which helped abit but the laptop still runs slow. if you could please try and clean up the system and also give me pointers/programs to help with security in the future etc... my hijackthis log is below. thanks in advance for any help.

Hi pinman,

As you have noted, this machine has no antivirus protection. Without antivirus software the computer is very vulnerable and can easily be infected at any time so it it is essential you have one active at all times.

There are several free packages available, two of the most popular are here:
Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/
Avast!: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

If you have no antivirus program then download and install one immediately, update the definitions and set it to update automatically.
Please ensure you have one antivirus program installed before continuing

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download the latest version of HijackThis from here (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save):

Once you have downloaded the new version, remove the old version via Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features and then use Windows Explorer (right-click Start & select Explore) to delete the old program file:
QUOTE
C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Then run the new version's installer HJTInstall.exe and follow the prompts to install it.
Note - when using HijackThis you must right-click the program file or shortcut and select Run as administrator

After installing, HijackThis will open automatically, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
QUOTE
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} (Fun Web Products Installer Start) - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/f...etup1.0.1.0.cab
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scan with ESET online scanner:
  • Open Internet Explorer by right-clicking the IE icon (on the Start menu or quick launch) and selecting Run as administrator
  • NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  • Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start, copy/paste the following command into the search box and press Enter:
    QUOTE
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.
  • Please be sure to close this Internet Explorer window before continuing.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Eset report and a new HijackThis log.
Go to the top of the page

Hi pinman,

I'm pretty sure the Antivir detection was actually part of the Eset scanner, however the Eset scanner has turned up a malware folder. We will remove all the detections anyway to be sure.

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder:
QUOTE
C:\Program Files\Starware368
If you have trouble finding or deleting this, please let me know in your next response.

Next, press Start, type cleanmgr into the search box and press Enter
Select Files from all users on this computer, and select your system drive (C: )
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Delete files to confirm

Open HijackThis by right-clicking the HijackThis program file or shortcut and selecting Run as administrator
Select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know how your machine is running at present.

Hi pinman,

I'm glad to hear things have improved, some important final steps:

Please open Start->Control Panel->Uninstall a program/Programs and Features, and remove Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6
This is out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 7) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
Viewpoint Media Player can be removed via Programs and Features

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start, then right-click Computer, select Properties then click System Protection
  • Next to You can create a Restore Point right now... click Create...
  • Type a name for the Restore Point like All Clean and press OK
  • Once the Restore Point has been created, press OK, OK and close the System dialog box.

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start, type cleanmgr in the search box and press Enter
  • Select Files from all users on this computer
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and confirm by pressing Delete
  • Then press OK and Delete Files to confirm

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the above went well I think your machine is clean of malware smile.gif here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
