For the past four days, when I use a search engine (Google, Yahoo, MSN), all the results are shown with a blank, wide, left margin. It seems that something should be there, but there is not. All the search results are shifted almost halfway to the center of the page. When I right-click on the blank margin, nothing happens. Of course, when I click on a search link, the link site will show a normal display.
I used to have a popup during this time period, but it seems that Advanced SystemCare3 may have taken care of that lately. This is getting to be annoying, and I appreciate any help.
By the way, I have Google Chrome installed, but I haven't seen any problems with it yet.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
• Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

A few things to straighten up still.

• Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only

• Close all programs except for HijackThis.
• Click on Fix checked
• A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
• Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following file and DELETE it (if still present):

C:\WINDOWSALCMTR.EXE <--This file

Then I'd like you to run an online scan just be be sure we didn't miss anything. Be prepared that this will take several hours. You can just let it run. You don't have to watch it.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
• Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  Mail databases
• Click on My Computer under Scan.
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
• Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
• Please post this log in your next reply.

Sorry to be late in my reply. I just came off 12 hrs. night shift. At any rate, I ran Hijack This and fixed the 4 entries as you directed. Next, I found the ALCMTR.EXE file in Windows and deleted that. Then I went to the Kaspersky website and followed your instructions for the scan. The results indicated no Malware was detected. There was nothing to copy and paste for here.

You need to create a new Clean restore point.
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up... button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  
  1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  2. Click once on the Security tab
  3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
  5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  11. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  12. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:

• From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
• click on Properties
• Select the Automatic Updates tab
• Click on Automatic
• Click on Apply button
• Click on OK to exit.

If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.


Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

One question I do have about Firewalls. I have LinkSys Router. Doesn't that work as a Firewall? Do I still need to install a Firewall?

Yes. Your router should have a hardware firewall. It is advised that you also have a software firewall. These are both explained better than I can in the article Understanding and Using Firewalls.
