I have had a couple of weeks of nightmare after initially acquiring "msvc.exe". The firewall alerted me and I blocked this app's intrusion and subsequently marked it for boot-time removal. I'll keep this storyas brief as I can. After following suggestions on another board I was unable to locate any associated registry entries - notably the spoolsrv.exe clone associated with this trojan (I'm told). There have been a lot of odd events on this computer - procesor runaways, problems accesing mail accounts etc and I'm now suspicious and too nervous to use it for any online transactions - which is a pain. I believe that both of my mail accounts were hijacked at various times. Trouble is the situation has got me confused. I have run numerous apps to check the machine out (eval. Kaspersky, Avast, AVG, TrendMicro Housecall, CCleaner, Spybot etc) without locating anything nasty apart from a few tracking cookies. Now today I installed a Logitec Webcam. During the installation I got lots of alerts (LOTS!) about system and registry stuff from Kaspersky and ZoneAlarm firewall which I simply authorised on the understanding that this was part of the Logitec installer process (pretty damned extensive for such a minor component!) Subsequently I have run TrendMicro Housecall again which has alerted me to security holes associated with MSXML (one is ref: MS06-071, the other [I think] ditto 061). Now I'm REALLY confused as the Microsoft KB pages on this are beyond me - at least unless I spend a very long time trying to figure this stuff out, and maybe not even then (nearly 60 years old and getting dimmer.) All I want to do is evaluate this machine to the extent that I can trust it again. It is an XPPro SP2 box with as far as I know all the MS update patches installed. I have Hijack this installed (version from a couple of years ago when the last panic happened). I'll append the log. I'd appreciate help as my nervous system isn't what it was and this sh*t really rattles me. The thought of a full rebuild knocks me over completely...
