A couple of days ago it seemed like a vius or something was on my computer. In the quick launch buttons on the bottom right hand of my screen I there is a balloon that keeps poppig up saying that there is malicious software on my computer and that I should go to this site to download a remover. Also I have been getting pop-ups on my screen about joining some casino places and dating services. Also Spyware Stike has installed itself on my computer. I have run both Symantec Virus scan and Ad-Aware scan. Both have found stuff and deleted them but it doesn't seem like anthing has happened. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Here is my HJT log:

Hello Porky2005, welcome to the forum.

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.


Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.


Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.


Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Double-click the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your Desktop.


Reboot to safe mode

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open Ewido Security Suite

• Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let
• it clean everything it finds.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom
• of the screen named
• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Empty recycle bin.


Reboot

Download this file from the link to your desktop.

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

As for m computer, it seems like it is back to normal. There are no more popups and the notice that was always coming up at the bottom right is not coming up any more.

Sorry, actually there is still something not right with my computer. When I try and run my Symantec Antivirus scan it pops up saying: "Could not start scan. Scan engine returned error 0x20000058." So i cannot run my virus scan. Should I re-install my virus scan?

Yes and let me know if that fixes it.

I uninstalled my anti-virus and then re-installed it, unfortunaltly it did not fix the problem. The same warning still pops up.

Click Start > Run.
In the Run dialog box, type regedit and then click OK.
In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon

On the right side find Shell. Right click on Shell and select Modify. In the Value Date type in Explorer.exe select OK. to save it.

Exit the registry and reboot.

Post a new HJT log and see if Norton's will work.

I open up the registry edit and navigate to the subkey, but there is no Shell. There is a AutoRestartShell and if I try to modify that I can not type in Explorer.exe, it has to be either Hexadecimal or decimal.

Next, launch Notepad, and copy/paste all the blue REGEDIT below to it
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

I suggest you do this:


Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


Use Add/Remove Programs and remove: If listed.
ISTsvc
SurfAccuracy
Viewpoint Manager


Open HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Misc Tools"
2. Click "Delete a NT Service"

In the Delete window, enter, NTBOOT and press OK. OK any prompts,

close HijackThis

Next:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"



delete these files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe


Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.



Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:

Open AdAware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.


Download Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.175

If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.

Then double-click on the killbox.exe program.


Start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files.
Then select the option labeled Delete on reboot.

Do not close killbox, and open notepad, by clicking on Start, then Run, and typing notepad.exe and pressing the OK button.


When notepad is open, copy and paste the following bolded text into the notepad screen. You do this by highlighting each of the below bolded filenames and then pressing Control-C on your keyboard. Then click on the open notepad windows and press Control-V to paste the contents into the notepad.

Click start->run->type services.msc.
Hit enter.
Double-click the following service:
NTBOOTMGR (NTBOOT)
Click 'stop', to stop the service if it is running, and set to 'disabled' in the pull down menu under the 'Startup type' section'
Exit services.msc

Please download and install this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup!
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space.

Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
Do NOT log off and reboot when prompted to.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning then put a tick against the following, close all other browsers and windows and click 'fix checked'

Boot into Safe Mode.
Windows 2000, XP:
1. Restart the computer
2. Watch the screen while it is black. After the BIOS memory check is done, start tapping the F8 key. If done right, the Windows Advanced Options Menu will appear.
3. Select Safe Mode from the menu. Starting Windows in Safe Mode may take several minutes

I am going to have you remove this bogus service NTBOOT by doing the following:
Click Start-> Run and type cmd in the Open: line. Click OK.
* Type or paste in the following in bold: sc delete NTBOOT
* Hit Enter
* Type: Exit
* Hit Enter

Locate and delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS2\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe

Rerun Cleanup!

Reboot normally

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\notification.dll


1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I could not delete this i got an error saying:

Cannot delete notification: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Should I try and delete it in safe mode?

Close all windows and browsers.
Open HijackThis

Click on Open Misc Tools
Click on Delete a File On Reboot
Click once on the file below to select it:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\notification.dll


Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Now, back at the main screen of HijackThis, proceed to Scan.
and put a check by these.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: mdc - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\notification.dll

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.
