I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop. Intel Dual core processor at 1.66GHz. 1.5GB RAM (updated from 512 about a year ago), running Windows XP Home edition.

Recently my laptop started switching off at random. I must admit, at first I did'nt pay as much attention as i should have. But when it happened a coupla weeks back, I simply restarted it. Then i found the laptop speed had reduced dramatically. It'd take about 5-10 minutes to switch on, and then every application would take an age to open and run. Any audio video application would run with a hugh lag. Even youtube videos, after allowing buffer, would lag heavily.

After searching around on the net, I got to cleaning my laptop. The vents were pretty badly clogged, and i guess i needed to restore some of the thermal grease. I installed speedfan to maintain a check on temperature readings. Before cleaning, the average temperature would be around 75 degrees. After cleaning up everything (I still have to restore the grease) the temperature came down to averaging about 50 degrees on battery power only. The problem with slow pc still did'nt go. I did some more research, and came across a topic which said sometimes, the laptop charger may coz the slowdown. I don't know how this can happen, but i tried to confirm this by removing the charger and running on battery only. The result was, the cpu temerature with charger would vary close to 70 - 75 degrees. When the charger is removed, then on battery the average temeperature would be around 50 degrees.

I figured maybe that solves my problem. But then before buying a new charger, I decided to one last test. I charged the battery to full and then left it to cool down for a coupla hours. Then i started the laptop on battery only, and ran it for a while. There were still no changes, and the laptop ran as slow as it was before. The temperature maintained at about 50 degrees.

So now i have no idea wat to do, how to fix this. Is it possible the CPU may have permanently underclocked or sumthin during this problem?? Or is it some other deeply embedded issue!!!! pullhair.gif ????

I'd really appreciate if someone can help me out here!!!!

(PS. I ran a lot of virus and malware scans earlier, when my laptop first started switching off. Everything seemed clean)

[Edit] So a little while ago i'd put the system into standby. After about half hour, as according to the settings, the system automatically came out of standby and went started goin into hibernation......about 10 seconds with goin into hibernation, the laptop just turned off. I immediately felt around the base of the laptop as well as around the keyboard, and it was cold. Forget hot or warm, it was stone cold. I can't figure it out......clearly its not an overheating issue....so wat could it be???? unsure.gif

its probably dying.......get any last minute data copied off quickly..you may only have one more chance............... so do everything you have to at the same time as your machine may only boot up one more time!

Get a new hard drive, install a fresh copy of Windows ( as previously mentioned....... you can either get the discs from the manufacturer or retailer, or find a chum who's got the correct disc, and borrow it for the install.....( use your own serial number .....it should be on the bottom of the machine on the COA sticker)
Once its all running fine then image it keep at least one copy of the image file safe on removable media and make a boot disc...so you will be fireproof for the future.......
