[Resolved] ad.yieldmanager problems, My hijack this log Options

Hello I have not been here in several years, but now my computer is having problems again. When I go to certain sites (Facebook and Ebay specifically) the page will load correctly, but then if I do not manually stop the load, it will go to a new page which reads either HTTP 400 Bad Request, or (more commonly) Sorry, we couldn't find http://ad.yieldmanager.com/st%3Fad_type. This has been happening for about 2 months now, and its really annoying. I have attached my log file. Please please please help me out!!!

Your HijackThis log looks clean, just some tidying up to do:

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

The problem could be caused by a custom hosts file blocking the connection to that server, we can check as follows:
Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Notepad will open, save a copy of this file to your Desktop as hosts.txt and then upload it as an attachment to your next response.

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and attach the hosts.txt output.

Hi CleanMe,

Spybot S&D has added several thousand hostnames to your hosts file to protect you from a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. It does this by blocking connections to bad or unwanted hostnames. One of the hostnames is ad.yieldmanager.com so connections to it have been blocked - this is likely to be the cause of the problem.

You can try enabling connections to that host as follows:

• Open Spybot S&D, press Mode->Advanced Mode and say Yes to the prompt.
• Select Tools->IE Tweaks from the left menu and UN-check Lock hosts file read-only as protection against hijackers
• Leave Spybot S&D open for now
• Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
  

  notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

• Notepad will open with your hosts file
• Press CTRL-F, type ad.yieldmanager.com in the Find box and press Find Next
• Type hash marks (#) at the beginning of the two lines containing ad.yieldmanager.com so they look like this:
  

  #127.0.0.1 ad.yieldmanager.com
  #127.0.0.1 www.ad.yieldmanager.com

• Press File->Save to save the changes and close Notepad
• Switch back to Spybot S&D and check Lock hosts file read-only as protection against hijackers
• Close Spybot S&D

You should know that you will need to perform this procedure each time you re-immunize with Spybot. Also, you may now be storing some 'bad' cookies so remember to scan with Spybot S&D regularly.


Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
(They should have this icon next to it: )
Remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 3), from here:

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

You have good protection software installed however I recommend you also install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this will protect you from a wider range of malware and also that it will protect you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, one I can recommend is Comodo:

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.
