Hi! I am new to this forum. I ran a scan for over 7 hours today in Spybot Rootkit and I finally gave up and stopped it after it hung on one file for several hours and never continued. The file was a Windows Media file - Windows Media Center was deleted from my system a while back to help it run smoother.

I am on Windows 7 and the problem began when my Comodo 'could not start' until I manually started it, just about every time I reboot. Then my browsers began to lag and freeze (Firefox and Google Chrome). Now, Google Chrome will not open at all!!! Every time I try to open it is says that "a problem is keeping it from opening" and Windows looks for a solution to the problem but never finds one. Firefox now freezes more frequently and gets completely stuck to the point that I have to use task manager to close it and reboot it.

I ran SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes a couple of days ago and SuperAntiSpyware came up with a lot of tracking cookies and stuff like that but nothing too bad. I cleaned them out. Malwarebytes came up with a few PUPs which I also cleaned out. I also found a tutorial on how to run DskChk on boot and everything was fine except for 60 parse records. I don't even know what that means. I usually look it up but I have been overwhelmed with my soon to be 1 year old and planning her Birthday so I haven't done that yet. I also ran an integrity check and found several 'cannot repair' instances. I save that to Notepad as well if it is any help. I tried to figure out how to replace the bad files with good files but haven't gotten that far, so I decided to look for a rootkit in the meantime because I really need Chrome to open so I can get back to work. I work for Lionbridge as an internet assessor and I have to use Google Chrome. I will post the integrity results just in case they are of some help:

Hi myuzikalsoul, and welcome to the WTT forums,

Sorry to hear about the issues with your computer.

 

Important:

Before you do anything else, please check that your latest back ups contain everything that is important to you on your computer, and they work! (I.E they are reproducible) and you are happy that you can replace all your files on a newly formatted and installed system should that become necessary.

NOTE:

It is by no means certain that you will need to reinstall your operating system and all its files and applications, programmes data files etc., however you should make sure that, in the event that it should  become necessary, then you have everything you need with several extra copies, verified and kept safe, on removable media, offsite.

 

If you are at all unsure that you have everything you need in your back ups (with all downloaded executables for applications, DVD/CD installation discs, drivers, product serial keys, including that for Windows itself) and good disc images taken when your machine was running fast and sweet and with no problems, then it would be best to address those issues now before proceeding further.

 

Assuming that you have checked out all the above and are 100% happy that you are protected with your back up situation as far as possible, then here is a suggested strategy for repairing your computer. Please note that the repairs will involve multiple steps, and likely a fair amount of work on your behalf, so if the thought of this unsettles you then maybe it would be best to consider taking it into your local competent computer technician and get a quotation for the work...

 

However if you prefer to proceed here, then these are the first few initial steps you will need to take: (more to follow!)  

 

1 Close all applications and shut down your computer (full shutdown not a sleep/hibernate)

 

2 disconnect all non essential peripheral devices, have only the minimum connections necessary for the machine to run in place, remove any DVD's, Flash drives. phones, external hard drives, photo (SD  cards and the like.)

 

3 If a laptop computer,

Remove the battery and place in a safe place, then with power cable and charger disconnected (physically disconnected from the wall socket) hold down the "power on" button for 20 seconds then release, wait 5 seconds then press the same button down and hold it down for a further 5 seconds then release. after a further 5 seconds repeat the holding down of the power on button and keep it down for a further 5 seconds then release. (by doing this  the internal capacitors should be well and truly discharged!) once the above has been completed then replace the laptop's battery and reconnect the power cord/charger.

 

4 If a desktop computer

Follow the steps above for laptops, but there will be no battery that should be removed, but you will need to disconnect the power cord, and only reconnect once the discharging procedure (using the "power on" button as above)  has been completed.

 

5 From a command prompt with elevated privileges run chkdsk with the r switch (the command you need) is:

chkdsk /r

(note the space it needs to be there!)

press Enter

accept the warnings

type the following at the prompt

Y

press Enter

Close down your computer in the normal way (a full shutdown not a sleep/hibernate)

wait one minute then restart your computer.

chkdsk will run and you will not be able to use your machine whilst its running, so allow it time to complete (several hours) and do not allow it to be interrupted, nor the power disconnected from it....If a laptop make sure the battery is fully charged before starting the procedures and the charger is connected and working correctly. If a desktop computer then if you have one available, or can borrow one, or can buy one easily, use an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) When chkdsk /r complets it will restart your computer

 

6 From a command prompt with elevated privileges run the sfc  utility

the command you need is :

sfc /scannow

(note the space it needs to be there)

press Enter key

after the scan has completed, restart your computer.

 

There are a number of extra steps that will still be required, (including several scripts/applications) but please let us know how your machine is working after the above have been completed and your computer restarted.

When replying please let us know the exact make and model number of your computer, its operating system, if 32 or 64 bit, and the make of processor installed (CPU) i.e. AMD, Intel etc)

Thank you for your response. I have already done the ChkDsk and the integrity check but not after truly discharging the internal capacitators as you stated so I will give that a shot. Before I do, I am trying to back up the rest of my photos and videos using the free Google Drive. My D drive stopped working long ago and I don't have an external drive, or an appropriate USB to back up the system. I am also out of money for the time being so I can't just go out and get one...so I am going to back up that which is most precious - photos and videos to Google Drive and then go from there. The technical aspect and hard work doesn't bother me as I find it fascinating and try to learn more and more about computers as I go. I just have a time constraint because I really need to get back to work, so that is a bit frustrating. I am going to hope and pray that whatever methods you have in store for me won't require an external backup. Thanks again!!!
