After upgrading to win 8 I've been having a few issues. (toshiba satellite c655\win8) 1. Annoying Pop-Up Window. Every few minutes or so I get a pop-up that asks me "How Do I want to Open This File." The problem is I'm not trying to open a file. I may be on the internet (chrome) or using word or some other random task, but I'm not trying to open a file. So I don't know what to choose and I just click the screen behind it to make it go away but it keeps coming back. How do I disable this? Or get it to stop? I've checked my default file associations and most of the files have associations. 2. ETDControl (I think this is the correct name. It's not popped up at the moment.) This window comes up but when I click on it, nothing happens. It does not bring up a screen or window, like most programs do when you click on them from the taskbar. How should I get rid of this one? All help is appreciated. Thanks.

Well I can close both processes from the task manager and I still get functionality on my computer. Does that mean if I uninstall that the computer would still work? And what would I do if I did uninstall and did lose functionality? Would the laptop still work? Could I reinstall?

Well of course, if you disable the mouse/touchpad it will no longer work.

Provide a list of what is starting at boot time and what is iunstalled please:

Download and install CCleaner from the following link: CCleaner - Standard

During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar.

Start CCleaner. Click on Tools (ICON) and Select the following BUTTONS to create two (2) text files:

* Uninstall > Save to text file (install) – bottom right corner of app window
* Startup > Save to text file (startup)

Locate and open each saved file in the ‘Documents’ FOLDER:

* Copy and paste the contents of each file into your next post (2 files).

??? Well then it's a good thing I didn't uninstall ETDCtrl like it was suggested.

This is what I would disable in msconfig / Startup then test and see how things are. Most if not all of these will work correctly when started, they don't need to be running at boot time. You may have some that really need to start at boot time. These are just the things I would start with and see what happens. As for installed software, you have a lot installed. Do you use it all? If not, uninstall it.

No, I don't think it's a virus. Something is running that is generating the popup.

I will disable as suggested. As for software, I do have a lot and I do use a lot - writing, composing, recording ect. But, I can remove some stuff. I'll do that too and report back in the am (for me).

Okay, I disable some start-up items and did a quick run through to remove software I definitely wasn't using. Am still having both problems.

The next time this happens, chose Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, see if you get an error message that tells you what file it's talking about. Maybe that will give us a clue.

??? Well then it's a good thing I didn't uninstall ETDCtrl like it was suggested.

un-installing this is not the same as disabling the mouse\touchpad.

when you uninstall software that's used to control/make work hardware like a mousepad,
on a reboot windows will just find/install and use recommended software for that hardware so the pad would still work,
but when you disable the hardware your telling windows you don't need to use that hardware any more so stop it working altogether for me.

personally yes i think i'd un-install ETDCtrl and maybe go into the device manager and uninstall the touchpad drivers and do a reboot, let windows find and install drivers for the touchpad and see if the problem now goes away.
