Hi Joyfuljourney, Glad to hear that you are making progress....it was good to hear that your browser Chrome is now functioning OK  If you are still having issues with Firefox then a good first step is to try and uninstall it...reboot and then try a fresh install, if you want an alternative browser, this may help with the memory issue (or it may not!) If you are operating your computer from behind a router that contains (as most do) a hardware firewall this will provide a layer of protection to you. As to software firewalls its a matter of personal choice and choosing one that suits your purpose...some folks like to customise everything and control every little detail including shutting out various IP addresses, or allowing access only through certain ranges of IP address.....or imposing other access controls to the Internet using the firewall, and can accept the multitude of alerts that will require the operator's attention, whilst others are happy, say with, the inbuilt firewall within Windows (that generally works in the background and presents little or no requests for user intervention..... ) as usual its horses for courses..... The important thing however is to have only one "third party" software firewall.... so if you choose to install another one (in place of Comodo) do make sure that every trace of the old one has been removed BEFORE you install the new one........(otherwise you will see some real potential conflicts.....) Thanks for the info on the firewall stuff. Back to having issues: Google Chrome now wont load any pages :wall: and when I start up the computer I get this message: "STLog.dll not found." Something about the location is unknown and it needs to close I have no idea what this is! Added: And now I just got this popup " Dsupdate failed to get updated archived direct list" :smack: :pullhair: Thanks!

Hi -

STLog.dll and Dsupdate are part of Dell DataSafe Online software. I believe the new problem with Google Chrome to be unrelated.

Use MSCONFIG Selective Startup to disable Dell Datasafe for now - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Or use SysInternals AutoRuns - http://technet.micro...ernals/bb963902

Reinstall/ Repair Chrome - http://www.google.com/chrome

Is Firefox working OK now?
Is IE8/9 working OK?

Is Vista SP2 installed? - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791

AVG or other may have quarantined the Dell Datasafe files.

I suggest AVG removal using Removal Tool - http://kb.eset.com/e...tent&id=SOLN146

Reboot upon completion. Install MSE - http://www.microsoft...ls/default.aspx

Regards. . .

Working on that now :) Thanks. Will report back. Oh IE is working fine (always has darn thing!), but firefox is still stabby ( freezing). I'll try to repair Google Chrome.

So I just did all that..or rather tried...

All the MSconfig stuff worked.

Tried to repair and then uninstall/reinstall Chrome and it just sits there...installing, installing, installing.....never actually does. I had this issue last time I tried this & ended up having to a do what I think they called an "offline install" or something like that. I had a hard time getting that to work even.

Yes to Vista service Pack 2. And installed MSE.

I was wondering about upgrading to Windows 7 http://www.microsoft...me-premium.aspx

Would that fix my issues or let me start new?

I really appreciate all the help!!! This is so frustrating! Also what do ya'll think of Opera as a browser?

IMHO it's the best thing since sliced bread.
Basically what Chrome has tried to copy and failed, but some people like it though.

Excellent security (use IE8 to install active-X's) and It is the only Browser that has a genuine "fit to width" preference option and that important to me. No more scrolling from side to side or using magnification or page % (EI8) adjustments. It has a very simple "e-mail" feature that actually works without any bugs and is thankfully simple to use.

If you don't like their (slick) speed dial it is easily disabled.

Cheers,
Lee

PS. You'll never look back if you upgrade to W7

So...WIndows 7 would fix my issues then? Can someone walk me through upgrading and I need to do prior? I've always heard Vista was a pretty unstable OS.
