Hi riffindus and welcome to the WTT forums, I hope I have understood your concern correctly but when you say
QUOTE But when i use the same cable to connect to my router...all the 3 laptops gets wireless internet. this is exactly what should happen... If this is not what you intend to happen please explain what it is that you are looking to achieve. Regards paws |

Did you do a power cycle of the modem and laptops?
Power all off. Wait a few minutes. Power on the modem and wait for it to stabilize. Power on a laptop. Once it's stable, connect an Ethernet cable to it. After 10-15 seconds you should have an internet connection. If not, please do the following: Click on Start then Run or press Window key (next to left Ctrl key) +R and paste the following into the Run box, exactly as shown, including double quotes: cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt" and press ENTER. A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close. If you don't have a Run selection off the Start menu, see here: Enable Run Command on Windows 7 or Vista Start Menu Also go to Device Manager, expand Network Connections and make sure Ethernet connection is not disabled. |

Hi Aariff,
This entry: QUOTE Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.251.80(Preferred) indicates that you are not getting an IP address from your router.... 1 Make sure that you have each laptop computer connected via Ethernet cable to your router 2 Make sure that your modem is connected to your router power cycle both your modem and then your router and then boot up your laptop computers (do it in that order please) let us know how things go run the cmd that Rich gave you previously and post us the output Regards paws |

Hi Paws,
The Plug off and Plug in actually worked....But i have another issue now... Scenario 1: LAN wire directly connected from Modem to my laptop(Modem ---->Laptop). I turned on the Modem, waited for all lights to come on then turned on the Laptop and ping to Yahoo worked. Same Setup, i removed my LAN wire and plugged into my router and then LAN wire from my Router to my Laptop(Modem-->Router --> Laptop) - all wired...It didn't work. Scenario 2: Same Vice versa. I connected LAN wire from Modem to Router then to my laptop(Modem-->Router --> Laptop) and then turned on Modem then Router and then Laptop...all in order...I got Internet in my laptop...Same cable again i connected directly from Modem to laptop(Modem -->Laptop)...it didn't work... What could be the reason for above 2 failure and success scenario. All the above scenario is only for Wired.... |

Hi Aariff,
QUOTE The Plug off and Plug in actually worked.... Tha'ts good to hear..well done I am having some difficulty, however in understanding "another issue" that you mention... As I understand it: You can now connect to the Internet all your laptop computers; either by using an Ethernet cable or by using their wi fi facilities. There is obviously something extra that you are wanting to achieve, but I do not understand what it is. Can you explain in some detail please exactly what you are trying to achieve..that is to say the functionality you need, but cannot currently obtain Regards paws This post has been edited by paws: Nov 15 2012, 02:36 AM

Hi Paws,
I am achieving internet in each scenario only when in turn off and turn on in the order. Scenarios are explained below. Scenario one: Connecting my Modem to Router using LAN cable then Router to laptop using another LAN cable. I achieve internet by turning off all equipments then turning on in order(Modem, router then laptop)...after achieving the internet in this method, if i plug in the LAN cable directly from Modem to my Laptop by Skipping Router my Internet is not working. Scenario 2 is Vice versa of the above...Getting internet by connecting Modem to laptop and Turning on in order (Modem then laptop)...after achieving internet...if i connect...my Modem to router using a new cable then Router to my Laptop using another cable, i losing internet...Again i need to turn off and turn on in order for getting internet via scenario 1. Hope this make you clear. |

Why, once you have it working plugged into the router, do you want to connect directly to the Modem?
I believe what is happening when you do that is the modem gets confused as it expects the router to be there between your computer and it. Set it up the way you are going to use it and leave it, or you will have to power cycle, no way around it, that's just how it works. |

Good question.
Sometime my router stops working wirelessly...so i try connecting with LAN wires then i jump to Modem to check whether i am gettting it from my ISP etc etc... I am planning to get another router to check whether it is router problem or modem problem. Anyhow i have a work around now....plug and play and getting connection...it is not a serious issue also... Thanks to Ztrucker and Paws for helping me on this one. |

i think the problem lays with your isp or modem, each piece of hardware has it's own identity called a mac address, i think your isp or modem registers the mac address of the first piece of hardware connected to it when it's started and will only then let that hardware connect to the internet, so when your swapping the router for a direct plugging to a laptop, without restarting the modem it will not be allowed onto the internet because it's mac address is different to the routers and vice-versa.
having the laptops drop their wireless connection is a different problem altogether and is usually caused by a bad/weak signal between the router and the laptop. |
