my cd/dvd drive recently quit reading. the previous day it worked fine. it first thought it may be a spyware/malware problem but that all looks ok. i did clean it with compressed air and still not working. the drive attempts to read the cd/dvd but just wont.

any thoughts?

Hello,
Let's have you uninstall the DVD-Drive and then have you reboot and let windows reinstall the drivers for it. To do this, do the following:
  • Go to START-->RUN and type devmgmt.msc
  • In the new window that appears, click the + symbol next to CD/DVD-ROM Drives.
  • Locate the drive in question and right-click it and choose UNINSTALL.
  • Once it's finishing uninstalling, reboot your computer.
Once it's rebooted, try putting a DVD in it again and see if the same thing happens.

----------------------------

If after rebooting you are still having problems, try the following:

Click Start then Run and type regedit...click "Ok"

In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Right click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and choose Export. Name this file "filters" and save it to your desktop. This file can be deleted when it is determined it is no longer needed.

In the right pane, if either UpperFilters or LowerFilters are present, right click on it and choose Delete...accept the deletion. Delete both if they are both present.

Close Registry Editor and reboot.

----------------------------

If after doing that your drive still doesn't show up, please download CDGone from HERE. Once it's downloaded, extract the files to your desktop and open the READ ME FIRST.TXT file and follow the instructions there.

Post back with how things are going after doing the above.

i did everything except running the cdgone. i was prompted to answer what file type when i tried to open the edit.reg.reg

i did call "tech support" with the company that has the warranty. they said the drive is faulty and needs to be replaced but i need to sent back the laptop. what bothers me is they can't guarantee any software loss. they said they will check all hardware and if anything else needed replaced they would do it also .. if the hard drive has a problem it would be replaced but no data migration to the new hard drive. going out to buy an external drive and copy the entire computer to is later today.

thanks

hello edi006,

so what HFCG suggested didn't work? then it's possible it's the drive itself failing.

and you probably test the drive with another media i suppose. wait, have you tried reseating it by the way?

speaking of warranty, what kind of warranty do you have? if it's within warranty and you are certain that it's just the optical drive that needs to be replaced then you can ask them to send the optical drive as part/s only and thus no need to send computer back to them. that should be possible even if you only have a depot contract(my friend has a computer with a warranty that includes an onsite technician and has another laptop with a depot contract. that 's how i know).

you can try swapping a known good optical drive to see if it's just the optical drive that is failing.

also, you can send the computer to them without the harddrive if you're afraid of losing files.

best of luck.
