as soon as i updated firefox to 3.5 both firefox and explorer stopped working. they don't open web pages.

there's no problem with messenger or similar things but browsers don't display the web pages. (i tried many web sites)

i uninstalled firefox and reinstalled it. even i installed two older versions. but problem continues. even system restore didn't solve the problem.

i first posted to malware forum, but we couldn't find any malware:

anyone have any idea about this?

(os is vista.)

goosghoune,

Do you get any sort of error or a "page can not be displayed" page when connecting?

yes, that's the problem. no web site is displayed. but nothing is wrong with internet connection. msn messenger is working for example. also i tried these at a different place and it's same.

I would suspect that you have security software on your computer blocking port 80 or specifically blocking your browsers. Disable all firewall or internet security software temporarily and try your connection again.

i already tried that.

and the problem began as soon as i upgraded firefox to 3.5

so it looks like the problem is because of firefox but when i searched on net, i couldn't see any similar problem with firefox 3.5

Let's see if it's browser specific or a more general problem.

Open a Command Prompt (Start / Run, type cmd and press enter).
Ping www.mozilla.org. If that doesn't work, ping 63.245.209.11

On my system, it looks like this:
>ping -n 1 www.mozilla.org

Pinging www-mozilla-org.glb.mozilla.net [63.245.209.11] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 63.245.209.11: bytes=32 time=102ms TTL=238

Ping statistics for 63.245.209.11:
Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 1, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 102ms, Maximum = 102ms, Average = 102ms

>ping -n 1 63.245.209.11

Pinging 63.245.209.11 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 63.245.209.11: bytes=32 time=103ms TTL=237

Ping statistics for 63.245.209.11:
Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 1, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 103ms, Maximum = 103ms, Average = 103ms

If both work then there is no DNS problem so we need to focus on what could be interfering with your browser, like a corrupted IP Stack.

Besides Windows Defender what anti-virus product are you using?

It appears you currently have, or have had, Norton installed on your computer. However, from looking at your malware thread nothing else is running properly on your computer except for Windows Defender.

If you have something like Norton Internet Security installed, it is not working properly and is a prime suspect for your trouble.

Try disabling some non-critical services and startup items like so:

Click start -> programs -> accessories -> run.
Type msconfig and press ENTER.
Click the services tab and check "Hide All Microsoft Services," then click "Disable All."
Now, click the startup tab, click "Disable All," and click, "OK."
Reboot when prompted. See if you are still unable to get on-line.

Please verify that you did attempt to disable the Windows firewall in control panel temporarily to see if this resolved your problem or not.

Ztruker,

I pinged www.mozilla.org and the outcome is similar to yours.

appleoddity,

computer is not mine, it's my mom's. so i don't have detailed information. but I can't see any antivirus program.

i disabled the services as you told, but explorer or firefox still can't display web pages.

Hello....

Please do these things:

1) Download the Norton Removal Tool (Step 3) to a flash drive and run it on your mom's computer. Verify if the problem is fixed, if not, continue.

2) Click start -> run -> type cmd and press ENTER. At the command prompt type proxycfg -d and press ENTER. See if the problem is fixed, or continue.

3) Download LSPFix to a flashdrive and run it on your mom's computer. Do not allow it to make any changes. Instead, please post what is listed in the left pane, and especially note anything in red.

Great...

Now, I suggest you download one of the many free anti-virus programs available.

I suggest Avast! Home Edition.
