A couple of wks ago, I suddenly went from having Administrator to Guest status. My neighbour moved out of toronto and gave our superintendent this computer, which I now have since the "super" gave it to me. Of course, the long-gone neighbour is the only one with the original admin.password, therefore, I am stuck as a dayam Guest pullhair.gif

Not only that but AVG scanner detected a trojan a couple of days ago, but even that's not working correctly since I lost my priveledges. The info given was that "Trojan horse SHeur.CGOF" was located in a systems file called "ruvoowa.exe"

I really was hoping to not have to go through reinstalling windows, but realize I may have no choice. Here is a hijackthis log for you if you need it.

Well, it looks like I've found the problem. Seems a Backdoor gave way to a multitude of vulnerabilities, includingVulnerability in Macrovision Driver Could Allow Local Elevation of Privilege[/size](944653), which, in my case is what's happened to the account priviledges issues.

I will add more to this msg, once I get the full report. mad.gif Just in case someone's in need of them too.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

oh thanx for replying, I've got my xp cd ready for reinstallation, but somehow to #key page is not in the cd sleeve as usual so I will wait for you to help me instead.

I've found at least 4 vulnerabilities, which can leave me open to a remote attack, including one though Macrovision Driver Could Allow Local Elevation of Privilege, which basically says exactly what happened to me/ The original Backdoor was cleaned/deleted, so it says.

I can give you a new hjt log file as well as one from winpatrol too. I already have and use ATF Cleaner. Note though, that I "cannot' even instal Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, due to having no administrative rights currently! Because of this, I do not hole much hope in getting through this without a clean instal, do you?

Let me know if u need anything more from me k? Thanx'

Close all windows and browsers.
Open HijackThis

Click on Open Misc Tools
Click on Delete a File On Reboot
Click once on the file below to select it:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ruvoowa.exe

Do not reboot yet

Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Now, back at the main screen of HijackThis, proceed to Scan.
and put a check by these.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kygom] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ruvoowa.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
