Trying to clean my laptop after I let some friends borrow it... somehow they managed to get a ton of viruses on it that even show fake BSoDs!
Currently I can really only get into safe mode without a ton of windows/popups/etc that control the screen, so I had to run HijackThis in safe mode. Here is the log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 17:38: VIRUS ALERT!, on 8/27/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmremote.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmadmin.exe C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php?wmid=...6Ojg5&lid=2 O2 - BHO: QXK Olive - {02AA6842-B193-4D26-85F0-DDA31FF3EA66} - C:\WINDOWS\wnlmdakqxmd.dll O3 - Toolbar: bgrqfetx - {D76144AF-DF87-4614-9630-91BE83E98924} - C:\WINDOWS\bgrqfetx.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BluetoothAuthenticationAgent] rundll32.exe bthprops.cpl,,BluetoothAuthenticationAgent O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelZeroConfig] "C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\bin\ZCfgSvc.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelWireless] "C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ifrmewrk.exe" /tf Intel PROSet/Wireless O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] %ProgramFiles%\SigmaTel\C-Major Audio\WDM\stsystra.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NeroCheck.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SMSTray] C:\Program Files\Samsung\Samsung Media Studio 5\SMSTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lphc30jj0ea35] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphc30jj0ea35.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SMrhc70jj0ea35] C:\Program Files\rhc70jj0ea35\rhc70jj0ea35.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [\Win71.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win71.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [\Win72.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win72.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [\Win73.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win73.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [\Win74.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win74.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [\Win77.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win77.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Antivirus] C:\Program Files\VAV\vav.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [\Win71.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win71.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [\Win72.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win72.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [\Win73.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win73.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [\Win74.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win74.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [\Win77.exe] C:\Windows\system32\Win77.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Antivirus] C:\Program Files\VAV\vav.exe O4 - Global Startup: Bluetooth Manager.lnk = ? Hi anisbet, and Welcome to WhatTheTech
My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread (ran from normal mode if possible). |

ok ran the Malwarebyte's program and it found several items and removed them. There were also 3 items that I had to reboot to remove (saved the log file first and then it restarted). Here's the log:

anisbet,
You aren't running Anti Virus Software Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW: 1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic -Free anti-virus software for Windows. -Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support. 2) avast! 4 Home Edition -Anti-virus program for Windows. -The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user 3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows. - Available for single computer use for home and non commercial use. It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. A. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop. Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version. B. Now we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools: If you chose AVAST Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: ) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)If you chose AVG Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this: ) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting. When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, ( I will let you know when) just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting. If you chose AVIRA ANTIVIR Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for an open white umbrella on red background (looks to this: )
C.Go to -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall
Notes: 1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall. 2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions. 3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser. 4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper. 5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine. |

Yeah everything seems to be running fine. It's been sitting here without any crazy popups or alerts, so that's good.

anisbet,
Good to hear This is my standard all clean post. Time for some housekeeping
The above procedure will:
Please re-enable any security that was disabled. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below: Understanding and Using Firewalls Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Winpatrol Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program. I would also suggest you read this: So how did I get infected in the first place? by Tony Klein Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved. |

Hmm I ran the combofix /u which uninstalled itself. Then I reactivated Resident Shield in AVG, however a few minutes later windows is saying AVG is reporting it is inactive. Opening the AVG summary window and it shows Resident Shield with a red X and "Not active". If I double click it, it's still checked and says it's been running for 20+ minutes.
any ideas? |

I guess that seemed to work. I was doing a full system scan with it after I posted to see if that helped. I let that finish and rebooted.
Everything seems to be ok now, going to give it another 20 minutes though. Thanks for all your help! |
