When I do a google search and click on provided links a new window opens and I am directed to some bogus site. Not where I was intending to go.

Show hidden files, Here is how:

Windows XP

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

NEXT:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

HERE:

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

NEXT:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

HERE

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
post a new scanner[HJT] log and the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log

Be sure not to delete anything intill said ok to. also don't run any other cleanup programs till we
get done it may goof ours up.

Ok so I did as you said and Malware found some stuff. There were two items it couldn't delete and I would like to know what they are. Unless they were deleted on reboot as the log file says and i did reboot. But other than that my google search links are now valid and are going where they're supposed to. Thanks. Hi Lav69,

There doesn't seem to be anything bad left in your log.
The items in question indeed did get deleted at reboot they were a trojan.

This is what I suggest you do:


NEXT:
Make sure Internet Explorer isn't open

Run hijackthis again. Hit None of the above,
Click Do a System Scan Only.
Put a Check in the box on the left side on these: (Not to worry if not there)

Mschroe919 you are da man!!! I did as you suggested and my system is running great. I really appreciate your help.

The virus in question was put on my system by my wife opening a file on her Pagebook site which was sent to her by her cousin. Theres no telling how many people have this virus because of that file being sent around.

Note you may have some of theses programs allready, if so just a reminder to keep updated.

FIRST:
You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
