Hello:

I have a Dell XPS laptop that runs Windows XP. For the last 2 years no problems at all. I am on a Time Warner cable modem and my desktop has a router that sends an excellent signal to my laptop.

I was on vacation last week in Disney (Orlando) and my hotel had a wireless connection that I used when I was there. A Microsoft Update came through for SP3 when we were there and the download began but I'm not sure if it ever went through since I was never asked to restart and there was never any confirmation of the install. In fact, this morning I went to Microsoft and the SP3 was still available and it downloaded and installed completely this AM. I had hoped that this would solve the problem but nothing has changed.

Anyway, my internet connection is HORRIBLE. It takes forever to view a web page (that's if it doesn't just time out completely). I use Internet Explorer 6.0. Also, I use Outlook Express (6.0) for my e-mail and I can receive e-mail, but it won't let me SEND it.

Everything else on the computer seems to work normally.

I have run Spybot Search and Destroy and Adware 6 and they found only a few minor things but even after this, same problem. I tried using System Restore back to a date before my troubles began and no dice. I also run Spyware Guard at all times. I ran my McAfee antivirus stuff (which is updated daily) and it finds absolutely nothing.

I know this isn't the forum for this, but here is my Hijack This Logfile from this morning:

I DID THIS STUFF FIRST:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Edited to remove inline HJT log, added as attachment (Ztruker)

Attached File  hjtlog.txt ( 9.85K ) Number of downloads: 6

You know what? I just noticed that at the top of this logfile, it still says SP2. I guess my SP3 install is STILL not complete. Not sure if this is significant or not.

I would GREATLY appreciate some help with this problem.

Thanks so much for any help you can supply!

When you installed SP, did you do a defrag afterwards ?
Major installs tend to fragment hds all to hell.

No but I'll try it. Not sure why that would make ONLY my internet slow though.

A HD defrag is not going to resolve a networking problem.

Also, you should not have posted the HJT log here, only in the Malware Removal forum, and you do not have the latest level. But ... saying that, I did notice this entry:

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\program files\juniper networks\secure application manager\samnsp.dll

so I suspect you have a corrupted Winsock or Layered Service Provider (LSP). Try the Winsock fix then if that doesn't help, try the LSP fix.

Winsock repair tool - Doug Knox site
LSP fix tool - Snapfiles.com

If no help, try uninstalling anything related to juniper networks.

Post back with results.

Thank you sir. Sorry about the misplaced HJT post.

I will try what you have suggested and post back.

When you say I don't have the latest level, are you referring to Hijack This?

Sorry, yes, HJT. The latest is 2.0.2, get it here: http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-Hijack...4-10227353.html

Well, downloaded the two programs you mentioned to my desktop, copied them to a disk, installed and ran them on my laptop (the one with the problems) and still no real difference. The Winsock fix ran and rebooted. No real way to tell if it found any problems as far as I can see. The LSP one said "No Problems Found".

I went to Add/Remove programs and found two things from Juniper Networks and deleted them both. Tried again and still no dice. I even tried to run the two fix programs again and rebooted, after deleting Juniper and still no better.

I think it's time to move this to the Networking forum, see if any of the guru's there have any suggestions. Create a post there and provide a link back to this thread.

Networking forum

Note: edited your original post to remove the inline HJT log and include it as link to an attachment.

Also, how does it behave if your boot to Safe Mode with Networking?

Also check Add or Remove Programs and see ifr SP3 is listed there. If it is, uninstall it. That will take you back to the SP2 level. See if that makes any difference. You can check for SP3 by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties.

I right clicked My Computer and looked at properties and it doesn't say anything about what SP I have or what Windows version I have etc., however when I run HJT (I now have the latest version that you mentioned above), it still says I have SP2 with no mention of SP3.

If I look at ad/remove programs I see nothing about SP3 either. I see only MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978), MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181), and MSXML 6.0 Parser.

Could the problem been caused by a faulty (incomplete) installation of SP3?

I will try to reboot in safe mode with networking later today and will repost this in the networking forum.

I thank you very much for your help and fast replies!

My Computer / Properties should look something like this for SP3:

I'd suggest trying to install SP3 again. This time download the .exe redistributable or CD ISO version instead of doing it via Windows Update.
You can get them here: .EXE version or CD ISO version

I think you are referring to Control Panel---System Properties---then Properties. That is where you see the window you posted above.

I used the .EXE version link and downloaded SP3 and installed it. For some reason, it was a 326 MB download and it downloaded fine on my problem laptop! I can't seem to get any other web page to work and this large download did. ?

Anyway, I now have SP3 and my internet is still not working. My home page loads (very slowly) when I bring up IE but when I click on any link or try one of my Favorites, it hangs up and won't load.

Control Panel / System === My Computer / Properties

Try posting in the Networking forum here (see my link in a previous post), see if any of the folks there have any ideas. If I think of anything else that might help I'll post here.

Hmmmm, have you tried deleting the Network Connection from Device Manager, then reboot and let XP rediscover it and reload the necessary driver? That sometimes helps.

You could also try uninstalling SP3 now that it's been successfully installed. That should get you back to where you were before (SP2), then doing a System Restore to before this all happened.
