I'v sometimes got some problems with reading data from my external hard disk. Sometimes I can't get into it, or my computer can't locate it at all. I could be a hardware problem but because my other computers were infected badly a month ago I'm not sure. Sometimes when I reconnect my hard drive my computer says it found new hardware, and that drivers should be installed for it, while these drivers never were needed in the first place. So to be sure I'll post a log. thx in advance Here is a HJT log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 20:06:39, on 11/08/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16674) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\Mixer.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_FATICEE.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R0 - ![]() Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post. You might want to print these instructions out. I suggest you do this: Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab. Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types." Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders." Clear "Hide protected operating system files." Click Apply, and then click OK. Please do not delete anything unless instructed to. We strongly suggest you do this first. This ensures we have a valid registry backup. ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore if needed. Removing modern malware infections often requires making changes to the registry, and a corrupt registry can prevent a system from booting. Compatible with Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 32 & 64-bit versions.
Next: Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Download - ATF Cleaner» Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. Under Main choose: Select All Click the Empty Selected button. (If you use FireFox or the Opera browser To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.) It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two. Next: Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment. |

Lets see if anything is left over.
Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop. **Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop** --------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review ****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze **** *If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections. Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed. |

Don't worry about that error.
Good job
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below: Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm Understanding and Using Firewalls This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program. I would also suggest you read this: So how did I get infected in the first place? by Tony Klein |
