I had a nasty virus on my computer so I had to reinstall vista in order to fix it. Now I have no sound and the scrolling capabilities (on the side and bottom of the touch pad) are not working. I already tried updating to service pack 1 but that didn't help either.

That's why formatting is ALWAYS the last resort - too many setbacks when you format. Unfortunately, you failed to tell us anything about your computer - the only clue you gave is touchpad, indicating it might be a laptop.

This sounds like you have not enabled the devices in your BIOS, or you have not installed the hardware drivers for the hardware components on your motherboard, such as the sound device, and touchpad drivers. If they are enabled in the BIOS, you will need to find the utilities disk that came with your computer, or check the maker's website.

You might be able to plug in a USB mouse, for now, so you can navigate the screen.

Sorry about not giving you enough information. I have a Dell laptop...not sure what else you need to know. I used this forum to help me try to remove the virus but we found that it had taken over too much and the only thing I could do was to reinstall vista. Trust me, it was the last thing I wanted to do. Now everything works fine except that I have no sound and the mouse scrolling feature is not working. I can use the mouse but I can't use the scrolling feature on the side of the mouse pad. I can't find anywhere the feature where I can modify the pad.
